COP18: Why you should care

Qatar will host the largest conference in its history this month. Not only will the country teem with thousands of visitors, but international scrutiny on Qatar, the first OPEC member to host the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be higher than ever.

Organizers are working to put Qatar’s best face forward, but acknowledge that everyday life will be disrupted by traffic congestion, overcrowding and at least some protests from environmental groups.

Here’s what you need to know about this month’s summit.

Mary that is a logical thought. However how will these people get their air miles or take the wife/ girlfriend shopping on expenses if they don't travel half way round the world.

I'll bet that in 5 years zero will be achieved by this and they will hold another conference.

I would care more if this conference was a virtual one so that fossil fuels would not be expended in transporting all these people to Qatar, feeding, housing and cooling them. Then we have to consider all the vehicles/people trapped in gridlock, engines and ACs running.

Goodness! What is the carbon footprint of this event?? And who thought Qatar would be a good place to hold it - it should have been done electronically, then everyone could have stayed home and saved themselves the trouble, us the aggravation AND THE PLANET.

Would have made a bigger statement/impact of "practice what you preach"

But organizers are asking everyone to roll out that famous Arab hospitality :)

ps QDCLover delegates are coming in from all over the world, not just the SUV-driving countries...

Can I help serve the caviar and foie gras for the poor hungry delegates as they fly in on C02 releasing planes, in first class of course, to stay in their 5 star hotels. Please , please. They can then tell me how they are saving the planet, living in their big houses back home and driving their big SUVs...
