Corniche road to be fully open to traffic on Oct 15

The Corniche road will be fully op en to traffic on October 15, the first day of Eid Al Adha, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said yesterday.
However, work to convert the internal roundabouts to intersections (Onaiza, Lejbailat and Al Maha) will continue during next month.
Work on converting all major roundabouts on this key artery to intersections will be complete by October 15, “six weeks prior to the originally planned date,” Ashghal said yesterday.
The road will be fully open to traffic on that date, after completing the final asphalt layer and activation of the newly installed traffic lights.
This has been made possible with the strong support of the Traffic Department, Lakhwiya, Kahramaa and the companies that were awarded the contracts to implement the project, it added.
Work on the Corniche project began in July. Ashghal assigned three major construction companies to work 24/7 for its implementation “ in a record time and according to high quality standards,” said Ashghal.
Roundabouts that have been converted into signal-controlled intersections include Museum of Islamic Art, Diwan, the National Theatre, Wadi Al Sail, Qatar Post, besides the Grand Hamad Street intersection and Al-Mina intersection.
The intersections will be controlled through the new Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This system will react to the volume of traffic by creating a ‘green-wave,’ maximising the number of green lights ahead of heavy traffic and thus allowing smoother traffic flow and less congestion. The number of pedestrian crossings on the Corniche road has been increased as part of the renovation.

Boxbe, Some roads that leads to corniche was blocked or closed. Due to the heavy and speedy road works in the corniche the road in some places were narrowed to a single lane which very badly affected the movement of the traffic. It took 2 hours for me from Crazy signal to City Centre (the same yesterday evening in the opposite direction)

Traffic lights are better than roundabouts. We will definitely see a decrease in road accidents.
