counselors/therapists/psychotherapy

Are there mental health professionals in Qatar that provide on going therapy or is this strictly a Western tradition? Certainly marriage conflict, depression, and anxiety occur within the expat population.

I hope this finds you well. I am writing this as a quick followup from my last post to explain what individual counselling, Psychodynamic therapy and marital counselling is about, in order for you to understand and achieve the best support available for your concerns at present.

Individual counselling is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviours, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change. People need therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. A client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy. Individual counselling can help people to resolve barriers which interfere with positive qualities, such as joy, compassion, peace, self-esteem, spiritual connection, and love. Many people enjoy therapy and relish the journey of becoming more conscious about themselves and their relationships.

Psychodynamic therapy aims to help clients become aware of and experience their vulnerable feelings which have been pushed out of conscious awareness. In order to keep painful feelings, memories, and experiences in the unconscious, people tend to develop defence mechanisms, such as denial, repression, rationalisation, and others. By understanding the causes of one’s internal and external conflict, psychodynamic therapy helps people to unravel the mystery behind their problems and to make emotional and behavioural changes. It is effective for a wide range of mental health symptoms, including depression, anxiety, panic and stress-related physical ailments, and the benefits of the therapy grow after treatment has ended. Its hallmarks are self-reflection and self-examination, and the use of the relationship between therapist and patient as a window into problematic relationship patterns in the patient’s life. Its goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptoms but to help people lead healthier lives.

Marital counselling affords you and your spouse numerous ways to bring about change that you would not normally know how to accomplish on your own. It provides a safe and supportive environment for you to identify and communicate the issues, feelings and behaviours that are bothering you, to facilitate understanding and positive change.

I hope this has helped in some way and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to email me.

ways to keep their Brains cool by doing YOGA, praying to GOD, relaxing with family/friends and get their stress level under control. Scientific methods is more acceptable by westerners.

Secondly, a social stigma (very conservative society) in disclosing their personal greviances to a third party (even Doc) being felt very uncomfortable.

There maybe vacancies in schools or colleges...Did you try there? then again everywhere they want experienced people as you are a fresh graduate it might take time...if you start a private clinic people will come to you for help...otherwise how do they know you are reliable?

No. Most Qatari people don't get counseling/therapy. People here think that if you see a therapist, then you must be crazy. This is the reason why most people I know here are depressed.

Mmm I imagine there must be a huge need for good cross-cultural counsellors amongst the expat population here.

Especially with the cultural diversity here in Qatar...as ppl struggle to come to terms with all the various X-cultural issues, many of which are talked about daily on this site!

PM i suppose marion means a sex therapist.

On the topic of general therapists/psychologists though...I have also often wondered about psychologists and Qatar...Does Arab culture place much value in counselling/therapy?
