Crazy signal

I've heard about a signal called Crazy Signal.

Would be interested to know where it is, and how it got its name.

what confused me when first arriving here other than the crazy driving (nevery mind crazy roundabouts) was the word Signal, taxi drivers would say go through first Signal and second Signal, it took a few minutes but the penny dropped...they are Traffic Ligts not Signals.

rarely carried road markings as they became worn out very quickly.

Crazy Signals were known in the past as crazy roundabout, Dawar Al Karbata and Dawar Al Majnoon.

It was a combination of multiple roundabouts in one. It was very tricky especially for those who were crossing it for the first time.

Seems the street system in Doha was designed by Brits. The streets are narrow and winding and plenty of little roundabouts. Is my impression correct?

It's quite different from Saudi, where the streets follow the American grid system.

And some drivers are even more crazy...

lol - well I just can't picture a round-about within a round-about.

I didn't have a problem with it.

The key was to be confident about it. I have on more than one occasion pointed with authority at traffic coming towards me on the rondabout and they stopped!

I learned that trick in the UK when a woman taxi driver did it to me and I hit the brakes.

I will admit to crossing it at about 110k early one morning going home from a darts match but only the once

so how did you drive through two round-abouts when the old crazy round-about existed?

Smelly (or stinky) rounabout was at one time known also as "jump jet" roundabout and it DID stink.

The tower on the outside of the "D" ring is (or certainly was) sewage and the metal top had corroded letting out the stink.

wmhizon, "crazy roundabout" was designed by a brit. Idon't think he was fired.

ilovefonzie & northand south, some of the stories you wouldn't believe and I dont think such instances could happen now.

We were in Qatar from Feb '82 to Feb '97 and again from 2002 to 2003 and a further couple of spells in 2003 & 2004.

The place has certainly changed particularly in respect of the social life.

Is this similar to the whole "smelly roundabout" thing where there is neither a roundabout, and it isn't smelly?

By thexonic• 22 Apr 2008 11:34

Crazy Round-abouts were 2 small round abouts instead of 1 big one, apparently less accidents used to happen at that time, may be cuz the population was low lol.

was called topsy turvy roundabout by some.

My wife would never cross it. She would get to it and turn right, turn round where possible, turn right at it again and so on until the right turn was the one she wanted.

It's odd how the name stuck.

The Ramada roundabout was at one time known as Polygon roundabout. Parakeets used to roost in the trees, then the trees were chopped down for security reasons, the Parakeets disappeared and thus the name.

The roundabout under Jaidah flyover was known as Mazda roundabout before the floyover was built.

B-ring goes from Jaidah roundabout, crosses Airport Road at the Capital Security dept. (the huge building beside Airport Road which looks like a desert palace), and goes up to Ras Abu Abboud st.

they called it crazy signal from the old round roundabout which used to be crazy roundabout because before this signal light there is two roundabout there together in one area which make the driver go crazy

Means Crazy Signal is the B-ring/Airport Road crossing?

By thomak• 22 Apr 2008 09:29
thomak

esp since there is nothing crazy abt it

This signal is very near to Najma petrol station. an easier way to identify it is from the Airport signal towards almana signals go towards Dasman centre pass the sinal and the next signal you reach is the so called 'crazy signal'.

This signal got its name from the previous 'crazy roundabout" which was a double roundabout in the middle of the intersection i,e, there were two roundabout's instead of one. This roundabout disappered in 2001-2002 and made way for the current signals and you could guess by now thats how the name followed.

when u come from the airport to the Grand Hamad Street (bank street), crazy signal is the signal which is just before New World Centre signal (souq nabina).

about 8 to 9 years ago, there were two round abouts in that spot, a big round and inside a small round, which was confusin the drivers. so people used to call it crazy round about. and when they removed the rounds and installed signal lights, the name got carried forward eventually :-)

so thats how its called crazy signal, sounds crazy ;)

By Rachid• 22 Apr 2008 09:21

The name came from Crazy roundabout that was there before they finaly removed it and put a traffic signal.
