Curbs on sheesha usage in Qatar

Criticizing the spread of sheesha particularly among Qatar’s young people and women, Central Municipal Council members yesterday unanimously approved a resolution to curb the practice, the Peninsula reports.

But because the CMC has no executive powers, the resolution takes the form of recommendations forwarded to the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.

More than a third of Qatar’s residents are smokers, and the government has been taking steps in recent years to curb that figure.

Among the CMC’s suggestions:

- Raising the minimum age of someone patronizing a sheehsa cafe from 18 to 21 years old;

- Removing the private spaces within cafes usually reserved for couples; and

- Intensifying the monitoring of sheesha cafes to ensure they follow existing rules.

Yes but I'd say it's more discriminating towards the men than women then. Like ok you guys can go kill yourselves just make sure the ladies are youngsters are safe!

That said a reason they could also be singling out ladies is because of the alarming number of pregnant women who smoke sheesha as well.

But I also think people themselves, male or female, should be educated on the danger and harms of smoking sheesha, rather than simply banning them for only a select few. So many actually suppose it to be better than cigarettes, when they are just as bad.Having seen the terrible effect smoking has had/is having even on members of my family, I can only see the evil in it.

Aiwa: Smoking sheesha is as harmful as smoking cigarettes, though some people even argue it to be more dangerous.

Firstly, I would like to thank Doha News for reporting what the Penninsula reported.

I think it's a good idea to monitor and control the use of sheesha amongst the young. The removal of private spaces is also a good idea.

I've even heard some women drive to the Sheesha places, they should be banned from driving too.

Why oh why. Everyone should take responsibility for their own lungs :P

On a serious note, what exactly are the harms of smoking sheesha? And why so discriminatory against women? :(

FathimaH: I can understand the age limit. but why bring women in to it as well? Ridiclious!

I've seen very young people having not just sheesha but cigars.

Issues on women in private spaces? Isn't that a norm that women and families have their "private" places/spaces?

I'm a bit confused to where this is leading to? :P

What is the difference between young people and women as per the article posted here. Per GT (Pg 8) the concern is only in respect of women....:)
