Descon Engineering Qatar (Some Facts)

knoxcollege
By knoxcollege

xxxxxx Engineering is currently involved in the construction of RasLaffan Olefins Plant and it has also bagged a major contract for the construction of the Shell GTL plant in RasLaffan.
This company pays its engineers 2000 Qatari riyals and the workers are paid 500 riyals per month and their overtime rate is 1 riyal per hour. Its camps are located in Al-Khor and they are one of the most disgusting places I have ever seen or been to. It is keeping upto 14 people crammed in one room.

The normal timings are 10 hour per day for six days a week and for the office staff there is no overtime.

Here is their address

descon pays low.. i was interviewed by their director last year.. their only offering 4000QR... for an engineer post.. i did not accept.. but u mentioned 2000QR for an engineer? thats very low.. and i dont think they're giving engineers with that low salary...

I heard that Descon is badly affected by the financial crisis and many of its employees were laid off, is that true?

Jackmohan2007 you are making a point here but practically its very difficult coz all those companies are owned by Qatari nationals and the victom of forced labour are expats. Abolishing NOC will only upset Qatari in general and it will be a tough decision for Govt itself.

Anyway the people who are responsible to abolish NOC are Qataris and most of them are using it as a threat in thier own companies so dont expect them to make any decision that can adversly effect thier own interest.

good analysis...agreed with it...

The thread is a yr old ...but the salary might still be the same.....lol

Requirement of NOC for switching jobs encourages "exploitation of Labour."

Let the labour market free of NOC and let the demand & supply set the rates and quality of labour. It will also automatically enforce the Contractor to improve the quality of life of his employees.

The result will be good contractors will get good quality labour while the bad contractors will be forced to improve themselves so as to attract good quality labour.

If the NOC goes then Qatar can free itself of the blame of "exploitation of labour".

Its a win-win situation.

So many blue chip companies in Qatar do have dark sides and there is nothing any body can do about it. They trap you on low salary and later wont allow you to switch to a better place.

Descon are doing a bit of work as a sub-subcon of ours on Qatalum, however they are based out of UAE.

Did you Google it first?

I you want to make a fuss, I'd suggest starting with the Pakistani media, rather than Qatari papers. There's no way a newspaper here is going to publish the name of the firm.

Also, you could try contacting a few of the groups who are campaigning against Shell. Effectively, the oil company is responsible for poor wages and bad housing by not asking for guarantees from its subcontractors.

blackhawk that worthy experience is the backbone of your career. Good companies always keep looking for the right man, just prove yourself that you are the one... :-)

xray, wht we 'll do with such kind of experience working in those companies. To them their staff is just 'good for nothing', but i wonder how engineers accept these offers?

i work in that company for 2years, i dont have that bad experince like i read in above comments, for engineers there salary is not 2000QR, they pay 2000QR to lead man or charge hands & formen. And i was also work in ctjv as manpower supply from DESCON & get a extra allownce for supply.even now i m working direct to CTJV but i will not say that DESCON is not good company, DESCON is better then so many compnies working in RAS LAFFAN.

Good posting. We should higlight these type of things to the public. I know this co. and I met some of the Engineers also. Wages are low and company has expanded 10 to 20 times within this 3-4years.Mostly they are giving manpower supply to CTJV and all. I met one BE Mechanical guy working for a basic salary of 1200 or 1500 QR. He was working for CTJV as supply. He left the co. 1 yr b4.

Agreed, that the workers are being exploited but mind you, if the workers had an alternative solution they would have taken it up in a sec.

Knoxcollege, lets say in your mission, you name and shame descon, you get their commercial permit cancelled, the workers then go hungry... I really cant see a winning situation in all this.

They were promised a salary of Rs. 50000 (fifty thousand) in pakistan and were asked to sign a relocation agreement/contract. They had no idea about the cost of living in pakistan. They had no idea that the engineers will be asked to stay in one room with 14 people.

I'm lost for words! I now for a fact that another company at Al Khor cant find simple office staff at 3000QR as it doesn't pay enough.

I don't go to mythical places with strange men.
