Disgraceful Behaviour witnessed

Britfm
By Britfm

I just have to write this and share with you all... as what I saw last night was really disgraceful.

On my way home last night around 6.30 I was at a traffic signal... in front of me was a Bus with children on it... all boys in football strips I guess around 12 years of age, they opened their windows and started to spit at a Labourers bus which was parked next to it... I felt so sorry for these guys on the bus... what cruelty they were subjected to after a hard day working...

I just wanted to share this with you... I have the registration number of the bus with the boys on... if I make an issue with the police do you think they would take any notice??? I dont think they will... give me your views and opinions on this.

Thanks

Kellie

Nice to read all the responses... I did actually report this after I posted here to the police giving the details.

I followed up a couple of days later and got a positive response...

PS - was not actually whining!!! I just wanted feed back from the rest of you!!!

Thanks

Weird enough, in some parts of the world, the richer you become, the more considerate towards others... in others, wealth is as nqatar put it, a lousy excuse to insult others....

Because of this behaviour only they get punished when they go overseas. These people think they are the lords of this world because they have money. Someday they will learn a big lesson.

Schools here can set-up parents/teachers monthly or quarterly meetings by that teachers can update parents about their child behaviour, improvement & class standing. Maybe communications is all they need.

Alexa and Nadt... I've had this discussion with fellow colleagues last week, while conducting a training about teaching Character Education. Some teachers were ready to give up, others already did, but a significant number were ready to keep going, fighting for a better word does start in class... those parents were students once... now I do know that parents play an important, vital role in kids manners, but it actually can work the other way around... two years ago, my 6 years old daughter lectured my about her rights for a clean/healthy environment, and asked me to refrain from smoking in her presence... she changed my habits, so those kids might end up teaching their parents...

It's tough, might not work, .... yep, but what' the other option?

As a parent, and a teacher- if this was one of mine, they'd get a hiding. It's despicable- but yes, unfortunately, it's learned behaviour.

Manners in this country leave a lot to be desired - let alone consideration or civility. You only have to 'queue' in Carrefore to witness that!

Of course these incidents are the exception rather than the rule- or are they?? There is an arrogance and a superiority complex from both expats and the 'Locals'..it's like a power struggle. The Locals have no idea how to practice what they preach either.

For example- it is one life's little luxuries in the UK that drivers dip their lights in the dark. It has always given me a warm fuzzy feeling that people are looking out for each other- like flashing lights at another driver if there is a fuzz and/or hazard ahead.

Here, no bugger else is going to do it, so you begin to match like for like. An eye for an eye? It seems the Gov't here doesn't really know what message it's trying to give. They seem to allow the Qataris to behave however they want and yet they want to be welcoming (ha) to Westerners?

Don't want to compare to the UAE but I know it was a whole lot more mellow and civil than here. I'm talking 10 years ago though so maybe it's just me getting old.

By nadt• 27 Oct 2008 21:59

Pixi, we are not talking about just transmitting knowledge, educators do teach values, discipline etc, but they are not responsible for the kids behaviours, kids are also influenced by their home environment, this is why i believe, educators and parents have to work alongside together to teach these values, its a joint effort, especially in the early stages. Anyway we can just agree to disagree..

Parents or Schools? That is the question... It's actually, throughout ages, the school that really makes the change in the way masses think and behave. And I was not talking about discipline, I was talking about Character education program, where students are taught about ethics and values, .. plus a school wide positive reinforcement policy. Otherwise, picture this: parents won't change a thing, so these children will keep acting this way, ... they'll grow up and become parents themselves... same thing...

Schools integrated character education have been implemented in most developped nations, and in many developping ones, under different names, ... but they work... not in all children, but in a significant number.

And I, as an educator, believe that if tranmitting knowledge is my only focus, then my job is not really meaningful... when I teach, I'm teaching them content, which is knolwedge, but also values, which is how to use the knowledge.

home is the place where kids learn the most, especially ethics schools alone can't do much. it's parents who suppose to shoulder the responsibility.

By nadt• 26 Oct 2008 23:18
nadt

True, schools here worry about number of students more than quality teaching, but even if the numbers werent high, i still dont think teachers are responsible for childrens behaviours. They can attmept to rectify and teach approrpiate behaviour, but if the parents are doing the opposite, then your fighting a losing battle.

Very true Alexa. Furthermore when teachers attepmt to discipline the kids, they usually complain to their parents about being "picked on" and how they did nothing , hence you have parents coming in and complaining to the teachers. Its not a teachers job, its the parents.

By nadt• 26 Oct 2008 21:01
nadt

pixi, school disciplining children is not the solution. Teachers are their to teach students, not raise them. Sure they will use appropriate discipline in some areas pertaining to school issues . In addition, even if it was, kids go home to "their parents". If they are not being taught basic manners at home, then school is gonna have a hell of a time teaching these things. I do believe that teachers and parents can work alongside each other, but to put the responsibility on the parents is very naive and unrealistic.

By pixi147• 26 Oct 2008 20:55
pixi147

I believe that parents might be at fault instilling those values that make human beings really human. But, for any society to move forward, it needs radical changes in its educational system, whereby today's kids, ie tomorrow's parents, learn and get educated and implement the change needed.

In other words, I don't find it really useful to determine whether the parents are the guilty ones or not, the solution in my opinion rests at school, where kids spend more than half of their day... they'll have 2 learn about respect and tolerance, integrity and citizenship...

I think It will be a good idea if you pass the bus No to the local English and Arabic Newspapers. So they may publish the issue and it will have some impact.

a lack of manners? I don't think it's a lack of education. Even some natives in a jungle sometimes understand what 'respect' means! How about an ant? Have you noticed the ants when they're marching? They are in one line, never see another ant fighting to get ahead. Even stopping when seeing another ant crossing his way. Do ants have brains??I wonder.

Yes, not all locals do this. Not all..

When I was on my way to somewhere, 2 Qatari boys.. I suppose they were Qatari, red tops and white thobes--feel free to disagree.. asked the driver to stop the car (not knowing what is happening) and then they just laughed at the driver probably thinking, "What an ass!"

Ahh.. well, not all Qataris are like that. Not all.. it's a shame lots of people have more than enough of bad experiences with them. What's the population of Qataris again as opposed to the number of Expats here?

Again.. I repeat not all.

I don't blame the poster if she will not report this to the police. I have friends who got into trouble with a few locals (it was the local's fault, the police confirmed) but then the next day, the cops said it was my friend's fault. Geez, I wonder what made them change their decision?

In my country every once in a while (actually more than once) you'll come across a kid who's parents are extremly living and responsible, but try as they may, they just can't control their kid(s), so they turn out to be the devil reincarnated so to speak. Now then, this happens but not to the extent where we have to LOOK for a well mannered kid these days. The problem with life in the GCC is kids take everything for granted. Why? Because they can. In the GCC kids never need to experience wanting somthing but not getting it, ofcourse maybe this happens but only rarely, thus, they never know anything about responsibility, parents these days forget that there is a difference between 'having' kids and 'raising' them. Giving pocket money and buying them clothes and food is not enough. When I crashed my dad's car (I was 16) I went and worked at a local mechanic to pay off the 2000 saudi riyals needed to repair it, because I felt it was my fault, my father never made me do it. I'm no angel, but my point is parents (not all) are giving their children love, but are they giving their children a lesson in manners?

if their own parents cant control them, who else can?

How about their schools here? Teachers should act as their 2nd parents right? In the Philippines, Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) is also part of school curriculum but i dont know here...

Yes we know this happens everywhere, from upperclass society to the lower slums of any city, but the point is we shouldn't come to the point where its suddenly accepted as a social norm. Just because it happens everywhere doesnt make it right. Otherwise I might as well start a petition requesting everyone start stealing cars to the extent where it becomes normal and no one will do anything to object. We can't turn a blind eye to this sort of behaviour otherwise we become no better than the irrisponsible parents who brought them up in such a way.

By Sandman77• 22 Oct 2008 16:04

In a utopian world, what should really be done is that each and every parent of the kid who spat should be flogged infront of a crowd. To such ill mannered snobish kids, their bus driver is at the same level as the workers they were spitting on, and regretfully the driver knows it. You know what will happen to him if he merely scolds any of them? He'll be back in his home country before next sunrise. I've been in the GCC since '87 so I know alot about the way most kids are bought up here, again I say MOST because there are some very well mannered ones around, but only a few. No one would disagree with you that such behaviour in ANY society is appalling, and if someone with a TV camera was to ask those kids, they would give the same answer too. Sorry you had to witness that, but beleive me, I once tried to change a similar situation and I was made a freakin fool out of.

You're right Xray. But then again, its a case to case basis. Even without mentioning, what you said is already happening to others prevalently (with or without my advice).

Probably it was best if she just pulled over a bit and shouted at the kids. They are just kids anyway. (But she might be the one the kids will spit at if she do that :) )

The police /authorities will simply laugh at you if you report this.

I find it hard to understand why the topic poster does not approach the police? Just posting here and whining about the situation will not do any justice. Go and complain to the police with the number plate, time and place of incident.

Blindly assuming what the topic poster posted is also unethical.

The children who he is "reportedly" talking about maybe were just 2-3 kids in the entire bus, the bus maybe of some other community school also. Entire blame goes on the locals without investigation or verification. Its the same trend followed like any blast happens anywhere in the world the media is quick to blame the Muslims without even starting the investigation.

Make a complain to the Police if indeed u are truthful and if u really respect the labourers instead of blindly laying allegations against the locals.

Lots of people expressing angst about kids acting like brats and there seems to be a general consensus that the police don't care. I do agree the kids are spoilt. I think its getting worse with each passing generation. But I tend to disagree with the police not caring about social complains such as these. I have been to the police here and found them to be very humane and helpful on all three occassions that I had to deal with them. If you give them the bus no., I am sure they can dig out which school and I am sure they will do something about it... a phone call at the very least.

Those kids, regardless of where they come from and how their parents behave, would benefit a lot from character education lessons, where tolerance, respect of self and others, citizenship and many other values will be instilled to children at early stages of character development. Unfortunatly, many schools favor prestigious curriculum, high achievement, A scores in all disciplines.. but forget that money and grades do not make human beings... it's the values we have to transmit to future generations that will make a difference... till then, we'll still see kids and adults spitting, harassing, fighting...

Asking questions over questions. They will insult us in any way. If it's a school bus, you can complain to the Supreme Council of Education. Was it a karwa bus?

Sad and despicable behaviour.

I doubt the police would do anything. If you can determine which club / school they were from, then perhaps you can contact the establishment and voice your concern regarding such behaviour..
