Do Women Gossip A Lot ?
London, Aug 16 (IANS) While it may be a Herculean task for anyone to calculate how much his wife or girl friend talks in a day, a study has found an average woman spends five hours a day gossiping.
Whether they are at home or at work, females natter for around 298 minutes daily, which is the equivalent of more than a third of their waking hours, researchers in Britain have found.
Discussing other people's problems, who's dating who and other people's children form the basis of most chats. Other topics most regularly include sex, shopping and soaps, Daily Express reported the study as stating.
The study found women spend 24 minutes a day discussing their weight, diets and dress size. One third said they spend a part of their day discussing what they are eating for lunch, while a quarter regularly exchange recipes.
The survey was commissioned to mark wine firm FirstCape Cafe Collection's search to find Britain's Queen of Chat.
Spokesman Steve Barton said: 'Women are renowned for their ability to chat and men are fascinated by what they find to talk about when they get together.
'I'm pleased to see complaining about their partners was at the bottom of their list, though. It is also interesting to see how the conversation differs between women talking to each other and women talking to their partners.'
Other topics include what cosmetic surgery procedures they would like, what the mother-in-law has said, and which celebrities they fantasize about.
Most women prefer chatting to their friends to anyone else but say they talk to their partner, mum and their best friend about completely different things.
The study revealed husbands are most likely to get the work talk whereas a woman is more likely to gossip with her best friend.
However, 36 percent of women say they cannot be trusted to keep a friend's secret and that they regularly tell their partner things they are told in confidence.

I think some other people here mistaken gossip to chit chat - gossip is idle talk or rumor especially about the private affairs of others (and they are often maliscious) which i think @akoparinto is not good :) while, chitchat is a different case it could be a light informal conversation., which i see nothing wrong about. (unless it is maliscious) Also i agree with others, why bother on other's life ? and @xedesmarie - i dont think i am one of those most women who loves to gossip ;)

It will be BAD when someone talking bad to other people, as they always sees something awfull to somebody, even just a little detail. they react on it.they give negative feeling about it.
This happens everywhere specially in the offices.

Gossiping is not bad, specially when your just exchanging idea, about politics, holywood,bolywood... something worthwhile to talk. where you can learn and share.
It will be BAD when someone talking bad to other people, as they always sees something awfull to somebody, even just a little detail. they react on it.they give negative feeling about it.

yeh i do talk about dating cloth diet sex but not to a gossip level in general i dont trust women i hangout with men more! girls usualy cretisise everything after u tell them something!
thanks for posting this one... most women loves to gossip. sometimes its about themselves or the others. this is kinda part of their pastime and most importantly, for the record, women are good conversationalist...

Twostone - I know men who gossip too..I think they're gay or just so damn insecure with other men and to get even they try to talk shit about others..
why does everyone think that women gossip is bad, we dont all twist things.
i spend about 2 hours speaking with my mother and sister in law a day, their isnt many women who can say they get on that well with their in laws, im lucky to have them.
Dont see why its seen as a bad thing to talk to family all day!!!!!!!!

spot on Anaa,Plus women then twist the words so easily too, especially when you tell them that you like them and want to be friends with them, they automatically think that you are trying on with them.Really free sorry for these women who think so high of themselves, In my eyes they are nothing but a waste of time. You try to advise/warn them and be nice to them they turn around and stabb you in the back.
men are good to talk to and i do have a lot of male friends but i have really good female friends too, we all keep our secrets to each other and our gossip is either celebrity news or about are own relationships. i dont like to slag others off as ps is right other peoples lives are their own!
I trust men more than women.. Gossips is such a waste of time especially when it's none of my business and it's anybody else's life..Why would i occupy myself thinking about others when i have a lot of things to think about myself? .:p

i agree too! women talk a lot more than men! i love having male friends coz they are most likely to keep secrets! hehe.when u tell a secret to a woman, it can be everyone's secret in just a minute! lol.

Although i always keep my friends secrets.
We do talk about sex, food, who"s dating who and defo about celebraties we fantasize about, clothes, what we are going to do today and what we did yesterday. lol
I spend about 7/8 hours on and off through out the day talking on QL, facebook, blackberry messenger, msn and skype. Talking to my best friend, sister in law, sister, step mum, mother in law and other friends and the hubby too. :)
