Thinking about taking a cruise down the Nile and was hoping some of you might have had a lovely (or not!) experience that you'd like to share. Also..please, any of you folks from Egypt, any suggestions on what to see and do there...ok, with the exception of the obvious, the pyramids ...lol

I recommend the Oberoi Philae Nile Cruiser. Had a lovely experience with them :). Happy cruising!

Daruuuude, I knew it was an old post, but didn't see her report anywhere. I was too busy having fun on my vacation. Hmmm, seems Scarlett is behind on all her reports. Anyway, maybe someone else might be able to use the info :-P

Aw Scarlett, I was on the other side of the earth when you posted this, so I missed it. It's a subject close to my heart (that explains my avatar).

When are you planning to go? And for how many days? There isn't enough time to do everything in one trip, but the Nile cruise should top your list. They range from 3-7 days. I would recommend at least a 4-day one to see all the best sites. Also, if you have time, tack on the Abu Simbel option at the end. This was my favorite of all the sites on the cruise, mainly b/c it was less crowded.

My cousin-in-law is a fantastic tour guide on the cruises, but he does German tours :-( There are tour companies aplenty. Thomas Cook is reputable. Make sure you get a boat that's 5 stars, keeping in mind that's 5 Egyptian stars, lol!

In Cairo... yes, the pyramids of course. The museum is a little overwhelming, but worth a visit, even if just for the King Tut collection. Khan el Khalili (the souq) is an absolute must. We usually hit it at least twice. The merchants are very aggressive, which some people find off-putting. Just take it all with a grain of salt and play along. And bargain hard!

They love Americans and are always happy to encounter American tourists!

Spend some time at one of the cafes in the souq, have tea or shisha, and do some fantastic people-watching.

If you have lots of time, visit Alexandria. You can take the train from Cairo. I hear the Alexandra Library is great, haven't been there myself, though.

The Red Sea is fabulous, too.

And yes, do expect to experience some, uh, "intestinal disturbance". Be extremely careful, don't eat fresh fruits or veggies unless peeled, and DON'T drink the water.

Take along lots of Imodium AND fill a Rx for Cipro before you go and take it along.

Hmmm, did I forget anything, lol? And where are all the Egyptian QLers? No comments from them......?

They are great Scarlett, I did my Sinai UN duty in the 1980's. I had a great deal of experiences in the Nile cruises.   Could you imagine a bunch of guys from the US, England, Australia and France all peace keepers partying on those ships? It was awesome.  My favorite place is Alexandria, Luxor and the Valley of Pharaohs. You have to visit their National Museum is real nice and has a lot to offer when it comes to their history.  The souks are great. Most of the people are friendly and talkative. If you want to shop for Silver Jewelry, Egypt is the place to be at. Lots of hand made jewelry.  Don't forget to take your mini medical kit, specially for the stomach runs.  If you get a chance to Dive in the Red Sea do it! One more thing, Don't go swimming in the Nile River, The Nile Rive  is full of Crocodiles and they are consider Man Eaters in your case Woman Eaters...LOL  The Red Pope of Qatar LivingBut as Muhammad Ali once said, 'It's not bragging, if you can back it up'."

Nile cruises are great, but be sure to only drink bottled water or sodas. More than a few friends have gotten sick in Egypt after drinking orange juice, apple juice etc. They are all mixed with the tap water which lays you down flat for 3 days with severe gastrointestinal problems.

Hi Scarlett, my family and I went on a Nile Cruise last Dec. 4D 3N from Aswan to Luxor. It was fantastic! Our boat was MS Queen of Hansa and we had a lovely time. It was a great floating hotel. The crew and food was excellent. Basically the cruises are categorised according to stars, with 5 stars deluxe being the best. In Egypt, our rule was to deduct one star from what's advertised to give us a better indication of the quality to expect.

One tip, if you do get on a cruise, ask for a forward upperdeck cabin (away from engine noise and fumes).

I did a Nile Cruise between Aswan and Luxor a long time ago - it was the best vacation I had! It's about three days on a really nice ship, you get waited on by really fun staff and get to see some history.

The ship stops off at archeological sites along the way where you get off and go visit for a few hour. Get back on and let the relaxation begin .

Definately worth it if you have the time.

Wow ... you are great ! now don't tell me u gonna spend all your day sleeping in the car ... lol

Yep i really gonna miss ya all, my daughter is much better now but dr. has advised us to keep her away from this climate as much possible ... she had a broncopnemunia (also lungs infection) ! I must say tha the Dr. in Al Ahli hospt are the best for childern .... initially when she started cough n had flu we took her to Apolo Clinic, they spoiled her case and after 2 weeks of no signs of recovery we took her to Al Ahli in emergency since last moment she almost lost her voice n signs of breathing problem were clear.

Thanks God she is ok now .....

As mentioned earlier, today am shhifiting to my new house, so gonna invite you all in my house for special Pakistani dishes ... soon Inshah'Allah

I wish you a very pleasent and safe trip ....

So when are you planning to visit Egypt ?

Wow - you're any early riser too.  This is my favorite time of day on the weekends, the kids and hubby in bed while I drink my coffee and read QL.

Let me know what you find out about a cruise.  Our goal while here is to do as many interesting trips as we can with the kids.
