Does this happen in the Middle East?

Taken from the BBC website.
I refer particularly to the beds facing Mecca.
Hospital staff turn beds to Mecca
Hospital beds of seriously ill Muslim patients are to be turned to face Mecca as part of changes aimed at helping patients uphold their Islamic faith.
Dewsbury District Hospital in West Yorkshire will also provide Halal meals and make changes to shower facilities.

Staff at the hospital will take part in training sessions to teach them how to help patients with their faith worship.

A Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust spokeswoman said it wanted to improve its service for Muslim patients.

This included staff positioning the beds of "very ill" Muslim patients to face the Qibla in Mecca if requested to do so by the patient.

Hospital matron Catherine Briggs said she had spoken to Muslim patients about how the service could be improved.

She said: "We always do our best to listen to our patients and are willing to adapt our nursing practices where possible to help patients uphold their cultural beliefs."

Re blood transfusion...a patient has the right to refuse. Other things too such as DNR...do not resusitate. It's usually on the form you fill in on being admitted to hospital.

Knox, a great many hospitals worldwide offer a variety of services to make their terminaly ill patients as comfortable as possible. I don't think there is anything fanatical about it.

Makes me wonder whats wrong with the people. Have the whole world gone crazy?

Hospitals obliging to differenr faiths? What should the hospitals do if a patient needs blood transfusion and the persons freakin religion doesnt allow blood transfusion. Recently I read about an Eighth Grader who needed blood but he refused the blood transfusion as his religion doesnt allow it and that kid died in the hospial.

So now am I suppose to feel sorry for the kid or laugh at his plight? You be the judge.

And who came with the fact that muslims cannot sleep with their feet twoards the Mecca. My dad wouldnt allow me to sleep with my feet towards the Holy Mecca as he thought it was disrespectful.

The more we cater for the fanatics the more we have to give in. If someone has a problem with the hospital bed. throw him out of the hospital. We cannot give in to the demands of fundamentalists as the next they would say that they want female nurses touching them (shots) or doctors looking at their private parts.

This is CRAZY AND IS GETTING CRAZIER DAY BY DAY.

was referring specifically to the positioning of the beds and whether this is practiced in hospitals in Islamic countries.

I think this has been answered insofar as, no matter where in the world the hospital is situated (presumably) if the patient is terminally ill then everything possible will be done to accommodate their wishes, no matter what those wishes are (within reason, of course - some old guy wanting to have Miss World sleep with him in his hospital bed before he pops his clogs may not be considered a 'reasonable' request lol)

Bravo jauntie :)

so Dweller , you see that this is a common practice not specific to any particular religion :)

Hi Dweller,

It's certainly a nice gesture . People terminally ill needs more attanetion and families may appreciate such a change. However, I just wonder why they made it public and published such a piece of news on BBC website. Is it that huge to make from it a sorta breaking news? Sorry, but I'm always suspicious towards media diffusion of such news. Maybe England is feeling guilty lately :D

Regarding NHS Hospitals in UK here is an extract from Essex Rivers Hospital's Inpatient Information. So I guess the NHS offers all assistance necessary to people of any religion - and quite rightly so.

http://www.essexrivers.nhs.uk/inpatient_detail.shtml

"Religious care

For some people spirituality is expressed in a religious way. Members of the chaplaincy team are available if you need:

a visit from your own faith community

prayer

Holy Communion

Halal or Kosher food

to talk about your faith

Chaplains are members of the hospital staff, trained to provide a high standard of spiritual care. They include Christian, Jewish and Moslem representatives".

In the same way that, I imagine, if I were taken seriously ill enough to need hospitalisation here, in Qatar, if I asked for a Priest I would get one.

As far as I know, the NHS Trusts that I have worked in have provided Halal and Kosher meals for patients but they come frozen in little trays and aren't very nice. I do feel that people's dietary needs should be provided, whether vegetarian, fruitarian or anything else. (fruitarians, as far as I know, only eat things that have fallen from the tree, not been picked!). As the NHS have banned relatives from bringing in their own food for patients, they have a duty to feed them properly. They have shot themselves in the foot if you ask me, when I was in the womens' hospital here, neighbouring patients were always being brought in meals from home and the family ate together around the bed. Very civilised and no fuss about litigation if the patient got food poisoning.

Oh, I just re-read it and noticed 'seriously ill'. In that case perhaps it is some people's wish to pass away with their head poiting towards Mecca.

Lovely of the NHS to be so considerate to patients. good that they are providing halal meals as an option along with vegetarian, vegan and the like.

First I've heard of it...this does not happen in the hospitals in Qatar.

At home some position their beds so that they do not sleep with their feet pointing in the direction of Mecca. But I don't think people turn their beds towards Mecca. This is not a religious requirement.

First of all PM I agree with you. It is important and I am all for it in principle. I have worked with patients and their families who are very ill or terminally ill and in this case everything should be done to make this time as personal and dignified as possible. In the hospice I worked in, if a patient decided they wanted a bath, a burger or anything else at 2am it was provided, the process of serious illness and death is immensely personal. I do hope, however, that the PC brigade don't go mad here and make anyone feel segregated because of their faith, and automatically move beds for people without their consent. And yes, we do have mixed sex wards with mixed bathroom facilities in the UK, although I think they are going to phase them out because over 90 per cent of patients complain that they feel uncomfortable. You could have a 25 year old lady with women's problems in a bed next to a confused elderly man. Utter madness if you ask me.

Its the first time to hear about such things happening in hospitals. Even in Hamad hospital here in Qatar they dont turn on beds to face Macca.

In addition to the fact that in Islam there is no restrictions for patients to make their bed facing macca. Even while in prayers.

Unless the patient is medically capable to stand and do his prayers away from bed. Otherwise he/she can just do the prayers in any pose convinient to their medical condition.

Not necessary to do the whole moves as in the actual prayers. A patient can do it even with his eye moves , simulating the original moves.

I think what happeded in Yorkshire was just a personal request from individuals which has nothing to do with islamic rules.

I also don't know what did they mean with doing changes to shower facilities. Unless they have common male/female showers.

It must be personal choice. It doesn't happen in hospitals everywhere here. I never heard of it. Not even done when my Grandmother was terminally ill God rest her soul.

This doesn't happen in the hospital I work in, some rooms are simply not designed in a way that the beds could be turned. From my understanding there is some sort of ritual that can be performed to allow bed ridden patients to pray, although I'm not actually sure what this involves.
