There are loads of reasons why those particular dogs are on the banned breed list. The biggest reasons are to control dog fighting and also as a public security issue. Many people here have them as status symbols as there supposed to be "big scary dogs" and some actively train them to be aggressive. An untrained dog that size could cause major problems so the simplest way for the government to try and stop these problems is to ban them. The UK has banned breeds as well it's just that Qatar's banned breeds list is slightly more extended!! But they are constantly reviewing the list and making changes to it, so hopefully the situation may change!
German Shepherds are also on the controlled entry list into Qatar. I am bringing my boy with me when I relocate, but the paperwork is more than if I was bringing a poodle or labrador. I have to have pictures taken of him looking all cute and cuddly, socialising with people.....
I don't know how true it is, but apparently those particular breeds are frowned upon because of their black coloured faces and then having brown eyebrows. A vet told me that dogs with those markings are seen as demonic, something to do with the Koran's interpretation of Satan.
I would have thought it had something to do with those breeds reputations of being vicious.....
On our foreign ministry's site I read that it is absolutely forbidden to bring Rottweilers, Dobermann and Boxer dogs. Would be a pity so I'd have to leave my believed Rottweiler Kelly with my parents.
Does anybody have a clue why this is so? Because they are considered dangerous? I mean a Pit bull would be more dangerous then those three races. (Yes I know, any dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands, even a Yorkshire, though there would be little reason to fear him.).
Where would you buy dogs in Qatar? I mean, if I'd have to leave Kelly at home, I'd love to have some dog around to keep me company if there is no woman who'd volunteer for the job... *gg*
well i usually walk my dog near the Gulf Cinema 'n walk like 2 km from there, i don't usually find people walking there so it's good for my dog coz shez scared of people specially kidz.... i used to go to corniche almost everyday to walk my dog, if u go at like 3 am on normal dayz you wouldn't find alot of people walking, but if u go there on a friday night you'll find it hard as all the kidz and people will be walking next to you or behind you... last thursday it was really quite there, usually there are lots of people on thursdays and fridayz...... but other non holiday dayz you wouldn't find alot of people...
Yes, that's where I'm talking about VW. I don't take our dog off the leash, so it's not a problem for me that the roadway is busy. He really likes that stretch of grass, since the only real greenery he usually sees are desert shrubs :)
I sometimes have to keep him on a shorter leash if anyone is out jogging or walking, but it doesn't seem like the area is frequented very much by others most of the times that I've been out there.
BBetzinQatar - Xanga is offline right now, but I assume you mean Najma past The Mall roundabout? It's a bit too busy there I think - OK for people but not for an overly friendly dog ;oP

Need to bring this thread back...
We're moving to accommodation near "fort roundabout" on Salwa Road.
Can anyone suggest nice grassy walking spots without much human pedestrian traffic, near this location?
Thanks!

Can someone maybe shed more light on the subject?
Xena
they are big buggers when adult which if they saw them might be adverse, but look at

Are you allowed to bring English Mastiffs? We really want to bring our English Mastiff she is really docile and layed back.

Cool, thanks. It's a great spot indeed, just that every time I've driven by there's been lots of pedestrian traffic. Cheers.

Never off the leash, but along Najma is a nice stretch of grass:

No worries, I respect others' space and as such I have had no issues so far. As long as other dogs have been on that beach all is well.
We are responsible and clean up after our dog too, of course...
Thanks again Qwerty, much appreciated.
VW,
Yes, I have seen many people with dogs on the beach. However, steer clear of locals especially if they have children with them.
Qwerty, thanks. Have you seen other dogs being walked there?
How do the locals and others react?
Sounds like a good idea for a Friday morning jaunt!
Al Wakrah beach appears to be popular, further a field, any quiet beach area.
