Dogs in Doha

PaulDPM
By PaulDPM

I may be moving from Australia to Qatar before Xmas and would bring my 2 dogs (both about the size of Labradors).

Can anyone give me advice or info on things such as what life will be like for them in Doha? We hope to get a villa - do most let you keep dogs? I know they'd have to be inside all day in the A/C.
Can you walk them on the streets and on the beaches (on the lead)?
How does the heat affect them - do they get used to it? What time of day can you walk your dog in the summer; when is it coolest?
Any info on dogs living in Doha would be most appreciated.

Not quite linked to this post i know! But i am desperate for a dog trainer for my two boys! One chases cars and never comes when hes called and the other one is impossible on the lead and has abandoment issues ( i cant be out of his sight!) can anyone help at all? it would be great if someone could! Also love the idea of a doggy day however i would be a bit worried about them as they got attacked by a wild bunch of dogs when i was walking them the other night and im not sure if they would be okay with other dogs! many thanks

Hey Poppy

What a wonderful idea, only I will only be able to attend something like that when my boy arrives from SA in about Jan....

I miss him so much.... my housemate in SA who he stayed behind with, tells me that he has realised that her car is the one he needs to get excited about at night... that broke my heart... but I know that he is in the best care ever....

I have always said, when I die, I wanna come back as one of Nadine's spoilt babies....lol

So, do keep me posted if anything does happen about a get together...

Take care

There are lots of us dog owners here in Doha.......anyone interested in dog get togethers?

I have the location.......trees, grass, streams etc.....YES it is here in Doha.

Thoughts please, should we go for drop in 'coffee & a play session' organised BBQ day?????

Worth giving some thought too if enough people are interested.

unclean.... with me its a phobia thing mostly. Ive been to London a month back and luckily havent come accross many. The only time I came close to 1 there i was shaking uncontrollably and couldnt move for 5 mins! Once there were 2 stray dogs in our neighbourhood and most of the ppl were too afraid to leave their houses because a lot of Qataris r literally mortified by the sight of them. Eventually the police came and shot them I think.

Hi AJ

You can also use Qatar Pet Relocators. They are very informative regarding bringing your pet here.... just be careful and find out if your breed is on the controlled entry list. If he is then there are extra things you might need to do in order to get him here.

Don't stress, it's not a very big job ahead... but if you want you baby here, it's worth the effort.

Take care.

No, I believe it was another 1000$ or a little less. Coming from Canada. And they do use cargo. But they take excellent care of your pet.

Is that including cargo airfare which is what they use. Right.?

I've used them. It cost me 1300QR from there end, but you have to use Petsgo from wherever you are. They are fantastic.

The only thing you need to be careful of is that muslims consider dogs unclean, so when your out and about, just make sure that your dog doesnt touch people. Thats why crowded places and letting him of his lead arent advisable. Otherwise. You shouldnt face any problems

I read somewhere that there is an organization in Qatar that relocates pets. Has anyone had any experience with them? prices etc.

I am thinking about bringing our 35 kg. black wolf looking dog to Doha. We will be living in a villa. This dog is so friendly he will likely lick your face off. How will he fare in Doha?

Maybe its the sharp teeth sammie. Just a wild guess.

Is this Qatar ure speaking of. Ppl here r usually petrified by dogs, me being one of them :-P I cant imagine what the sight of a group of dogs being walked would do 2 me.

By VW• 22 Aug 2006 16:43
VW

We walk ours 3x a day (she's a Jack Russell x Beagle so she gets cabin fever). Once at 6am, once at ~6pm and once at ~10pm.

We're in a flat too but she sleeps most of the time.

When all these dogs arrive we need to start a social group and go for group walks!

Does anyone know any places for off-leash play? Back home there were great parks all fenced in so she couldn't get to busy roads or bother people, and we could play ball or frisbee without worry.

And as always, I give the following two links to all new people thinking about pets in Qatar:

It is not cruel to keep them in all day they will like to be in all day as they will not be used to the heat, dogs are not much different to humans in that aspect they might get heat stroke etc but will ajust to it, dogs that are born over here for example, if you leave the back door open they do not spend much time outside so nothing to worry about guys!

Hi Paul

I will also be relocating my German Shepherd to Doha soon. I am already here, but felt that it would not be fair on him to just take him straight into the heat of summer. I will bring him in winter rather, it will be easier for him to adapt.

Unfortunately, there is no cool time in Doha in summer. So walking them early morning or very late evening subjects them to about 10 degrees less heat than if you had done it in the middle of the day.

I have seen dogs being walked on lead on the Cornish, which is a stretch of walkway along the water front. I am canvasing for grassy parks and patches at the moment so I will know where to take Anex when he arrives.

You are luckier than I am in that you will have a villa and some garden for your babies. I live in an apartment and Anex will be inside all day. I am trying to find a dogwalker to assist me during the day. I had a routine with him back home to take him out early morning and late evening, so will continue to do that.

Some people might think it's cruel to lock a dog up inside all day, but really, what else will he do outside? Lie and sleep? It would be to hot for him to get up and bark at anyone. So at least he gets to lie on mom's bed with the A/C blowing on him. Trust me, thats his ultimate ambition in life anyway, lol.

Hope this helps a little. I have the contact details for a company here in Qatar that will assist you with all the documentation regarding their import into Qatar. Thank goodness quarantine is not required.

You can mail me on [email protected] if you have any further questions.
