Doha Bidding For The Olympics

It ain't gonna happen Doha! Stop bidding & save your self some money. No city has ever made any money recently by hosting it.
If you really want to put Doha's face on the map of the world, start with the basics: treat people humanely, everyone falling under the same law etc.

I apologize for thinking it was the Olympics. But I guess the same argument applies as far as trying to put Doha on the face of the map while have two different sets of rules for people etc. . .

or just kept under wraps. And I thought our country is tops in corruption.

You read in the papers too 'bout different programs: Green Qatar e.g.. What happened to that anyway? Green? Well, they keep on uprooting trees! Just look at Palm Island. Would have been a good bird sanctuary but they took away the trees.

2022? Fat chance!! :)

As if Qatar is a voluminous country/city...

the athletes accomodation....

athlete families needs too...

the visitors who wanted to watch....

the judges...

etc...etc...etc...

That's right Hu Wan. TFCN, the poster company, just brought in contractors for a few months to erect the signage and take it all away again. It didn't create an real 'work' in a meaningful sense for Qatar.

Ex-pat consultants made a fortune and took the money with them, and Qatari directors and senior staff with connections to contracting companies made huge sums through kick backs and back door deals.

I guess the thing that most ex-pats find frustrating about this is that Qatari has such huge resources at its disposal, yet so frequently manages to piss it all up against a wall on nonsense like sporting events.

Most of us would just be happy to see some money spent on:

Palm Tree Island

More parks

Fixing roads

Upgrading public toilets (ever been to the Corniche ones... ewwwww)

Upgrading the sewage system so that the suburbs out near Villagio don't stink of human waste, as well as the putrid smells on the corniche.

But if the powers that be think that money is better spent on football bids and new horse stadiums, then that's their business.

they made some expats filthy rich during and after the Asian Games. Yeah, they got the record for that- fewest attendance for the games. But it doesn't matter; for the country that's ok since all they want is to be the first in GCC to host it(money talks bs walks). You can't BUY prestige.

Oh btw abynel, the company who supplied posters or tarpaulins during the Asian Games was a foreign owned company with few workers. It's not far-fetched same thing will happen again and some bloke will be grinning wide on the way to the bank. :)

This is hilarious, Doha bidding for the 2022 Fifa World Cup, they literally have 0% chance at best, didn't they learn a thing from their FAILED Olympic attempt. The amount of money Heineckin pay Fifa annually I'm sure they'd be stoked for the World Cup to come to Doha. And then there's the complete lack of any infrastructure...roading, public transport, hotels...etc! Qatar wake up and smell the roses, you will never hold any major world sporting events here unless there is a World Championship in Officialdom Stupidity, then you would be crowned World Champs!!

If I was Qatari I'd be thanking God I don't pay taxes that went into paying for these futile attempts.

no offense guys but why are we being pessimistic here???..... yeah i know the disadvantages like mentioned by fubar but am sure their are advantages as well.... like some company have work because of the bidding like the people who makes those posters right... and why are we so bothered about the corrupted officials...the money isn't from us.. Qatar is a rich they wanted to be recognize so what...lets just be happy for them...if they won the bidding congrats if not better luck next time

i don't mean to offend anyone

Gadarene,

I disagree. The Asian Games brought lots of things to Doha.

Rampant inflation;

Housing shortage;

Endless roadworks;

Unused sports facilities;

Not to mention that it was a conveninent way to get money directly from the Organising Committee straight into the pockets of corrupt Asian Games officials who were subsequently arrested for graft.

@ garnet06ph,diddly squat is what they got after hosting the asian games,sure it was the most expensive/extravagant one ever hosted blahblah but it was also the LEAST attended Asian games in the history of the games,people coming together to see these games is what really matters @ the end of the day & in that respect,all they scored was a big ZERO,the rest,i.e the expense & the extravagance doesn't matter after that...

By anonymous• 27 Sep 2009 09:23

they got the big "BOOM" after hosting the asian games... maybe more "BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!!!" after winning either the olympics or world cup.

Shyatap!!!

Nah What's funnier is the underground football stadium they are building for the World Cup they aren't hosting yet.

@ deerpark,they're not bidding to make money off it mate,they have enough of that,what they lack is recognition on a global level which is what they're hoping this bid,if successful will give them...NOT!...some 'consultants' have most likely become millionaires by advising the powers that be...if anyone of them is listening,i can give them advise for free...make this town real before bidding for these events...make effective public transport a reality,improve the pathetic road network,make the laws more liberal,especially concerning alcohol(they may not like it,but they don't have a choice if they actually want to attract people here),& the list goes on...until the above happens nobody @ a global level is going to give a toss about what they host because it will be a known fact that they paid big time to host it as opposed to actually deserving to host either the olympics or the FIFA world cup,so they're not going to get the respect they so desperately want by merely flaunting their wealth & buying the hosting rights for any global event...

They aren't bidding for the Olympics, they're bidding for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Which is even funnier.
