Doha mall set to introduce parking charges..
One of the most popular shopping malls in Qatar is planning to introduce charges for parking, it was reported on Wednesday.
The City Center Mall in Doha will implement pay parking at the end of the year or early next year, Christoph von Oelhafen, director of the City Center, said.
The move aims to ease the current parking problems associated with the mall and “give better service” to customers

"mass transport facilities for car owners", you realize you're on QatarLiving, not IndonesiaLiving or UKLiving, right?
Do you want to see subways, double-decker buses and tubes in Doha? I'm sure you have sufficient information about Qatar's population and area.
Please elaborate.
Salam
You say "why?" without answering it. So I'll say that labour bus & karwa taxy is enough, huh?
no mass transport facilities for car owners and completely not pedestrian friendly, even you are walking in pedestrian walk way, u will gamble ur soul only for crossing main streets.
doha should have learn to many major city around the world, where mostly people mainly use public transport for their daily activies. why? public transport & pedestrian friendly. pls dont say that labour bus & karwa taxy is enough, huh?
so parking charges will not effective, except the charge will be 100qr/hrs, and no body will come to CC. is it possible?
rezy, that's too cheap to be effective.
I always park accross near Salam and walk the rest of the way..
parking charges should be the same like fixed in the souq waqif... 1st hour charge is 3QR...then every next hour ...1qr/hr...
In fact I've been looking for a spot driving in circles, squares, triangles and add rectangles for the weekend rush...lol
Hilarious!
Salam
hope it comes into effect asap....i get sick and tired of going round in circles inside the parking lot at CC in search of a parking spot
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
last saturday , i spent 45 minutes looking for parking, it was 11:30 am, thats earlier than usuall
i guess there are people who heard the news and want to enjoy the free parking while it lasts
I hope you're enjoying the paid park in Wakif, and the 15-20m bonus wait in queue to exit after paying the charge.
A great service!
Salam
Aren't they building new parkings under the 2 hotels that are located in the 2 sides of CC? or will this parkings be only 4 the hotels?! ____________________________________________________
I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
For such a large mall you would think they would have foreseen a parking issue...and 'Hello' made a bigger structure when they built CC in the first place. It is a bit ironic that there isn't enough parking, yet basically the whole top floor of CC is vacant.
My humble suggestion is to go to another mall...same stores, same song and dance so to say...but I do like Debenhams...*sigh*...
I have spoken to the CC management and the parking will be supervised by specialist , especially for VIP cars like KIAs..
the steam will be off the CC parking for at least 2-3 months, till this new wave of villagio frenzy cools down.
it was a nice timing from them! now that people tend to go outdoors, they found a new attraction that bring them in again till the next hot weather.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
it's even hotter than outside with the car exhausts.
i advise all of u to park as far as possible from the main entrance, and walk the distance on foot. believe me it's good for ur health.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
Oh no Polish! imagine the charge is based on:
- Car model and year.
- Car size
- Number of car passengers
- Distance to main entrances
- (I'm afraid to mention this, but I feel I want to) nationality!!
We're doomed...lol
Salam
The charge should be specially for 4*4 cars, those who are consuming more space or brings the complete family (black district)
The reason why I mentioned privileges was because if this law is enforced, there shouldn't be a VIP section, red cones to book spots (which I've been seeing even at the Lulu's). I'm 95% confident that officers won't be deployed to check parking legitimacy, they may only run random checks.
I'm not with having to pay an extra dime for wanting to entertain myself and family at malls or the Corniche in Qatar, let alone if someone is there only for Carrefour.
FYI: I'm not a CC goer, nothing personal..:)

Toll both at the entrance, take a ticket...find a parking spot. Shop, whatever or how long you need to be in there...take your ticket to the shop that you BOUGHT something, have them punch the ticket with a specific machine, even coffee shops, and when you exit, IF you bought something over, say 50 Riyals...parking is free. If not, then there is a fee of 10 Riyals. That's the way its done in many places back home and it works VERY well!!!
Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.
Agree with the charge. Some people going to mall only for sightseeing or sitting in the coffee shop for socialize hours and hours...now they have to think twice or get rid off the mall quickly...
I would be happy if they charged 10QR/hr precisely because there are people who think that it is too much.
If you can't afford to pay for parking, then shop at Al Meera or Dasman or Lulu, or the other MANY shopping locations that are free. Oh, wait, I can hear it already... 'but we didn't actually go there to buy anything........'.
Malls are commercial endeavours, they are there to take your money - that's why people go there - to pay for stuff and to come out with less money than they had when they went it. If you are under the mistaken belief that malls are a public service to provide people with recreational activity because you are bored, then there are a lot of people (like me) who wish you would go home.
It's hard enough to do your shopping in Doha without having to fight through the crowds of people who just go to malls because they are bored and want to go for a wander in the air conditioning.
Paid parking? BRING IT ON!!
how can you charge 10 pound to park in the mall, only QR 4 in the airport.
However, parking charges is only normal in other part in the world. You should count your blessing most places in Qatar still free parking.
I have no problem with paying 2-4 riyals an hour, but 10 seems a bit excessive..
In principle , parking should be free for shoppers. So, it would be better to havre a mechnism where you get the purchase receipt stamped, which allows you to park for free..
If it was QR10/hour many will not use the parking facilities, which would make more space available.
Many of those who go there for a 6-hour woman-watching (just like bird-watching) need to think about the QR60 they're paying, and many they would think it's not worth it, park elsewhere, and walk.
2-Hours free would incite people to go out every 1h59m and come back into the parking. 15 minutes free (like at the airport) would make dropping or picking-up somebody free.
I have a moral issue with having to pay for parking.
If you want to keep the cheapskates in the towers from using the park then make the first 2 hours free (for legitimate shoppers) and then charge huge for anything more. Moviegoers at the Cineplex can show their ticket stubs for free parking. Sorry, I dont buy "we are not doing this to make money". If you believe the sincerity in that then let me sell you some desert land in Sudan.
Its just a convenient excuse to solve the problem and to
make more riyals as well. For those if you who dont mind
this extra fee, your choice but soon you will be complaingiin because everywhere you turn there will be charge. next is the air you breathe.
a comment on the article in the link provided, suggested that people who buy from the city center (bill, invoice,...) be spared the entrance fee, when exiting.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
Very well said Ram...
Parking Fee? at City Center? Well good for them...additional Income, but for us? I don't think so!
Parking Fee will not solve Parking Area Problem, as stated by Ram...its true..Population against number of malls or locations that we can spend our weekend...come on! where else we can do our leisure here in Qatar?!
10 Riyals/ hour is not an issue for many but for others, it might cost alot..
....ahan thtz gud!!......
______________________________________________
..... why worry and have wrinkles...when u can smile and have dimples :o) ......
Nothing free is the best... I'd pay QR10/hour... It would keep many people who are not prepared to pay out of the parking lot.
I never stay there more than 3 hours, and I usually spend at least QR200 to QR2000 every time ... so QR10/h is OK with me.
I don't understand why it isn't more commonplace for businesses and malls, etc. to build underground parking facilities.
As you said, Ram, the parking garage at Hamad? Already filled, from day one -- and STILL there are not enough spaces for people going to see the doctor. And this is for the ONE public hospital in the entire country!!
I fully understand that land might be at a premium here, but it's like no thought goes into figuring out how much parking there should be for a development. Villagio's lot is regularly filled to capacity on weekends -- and they're still expanding shops/theaters there so it'll only get worse.
What is so hard about PLANNING FOR GROWTH!?!? Better to over-estimate than under-estimate.
"Marriage is a wonderful institution...but who wants to live in an institution?" -- Groucho Marx
Nothing can solve the problem of the parking lots ..
Even in Hamad Hospital .. i found that the best thing they did was building an exclusive building just for parking .. with 4 levels .. each level is divided into 2 .. which make them something like 8 levels of parking ..
with all that .. Still suffering to find a parking
Instead of sucking money .. they should invest some money .. (with better income than the parking lot fees)
We should go back to the main route of that parking CRISIS ..
NO ENOUGH MALLS IN QATAR ..
Where do u expect those people to go on WEEKEND
1- CC
2- Villagio
3- Hayat Plaza (if consider to be a mall)
4- Land Mark
divide the population of Qatar on 4 places ..
1.9 Million divided by 4 places
Source of population: http://www.qatarliving.com/node/561227
i will consider that 900,000 r sitting at home or going to some other places like cornich or lulu or wutever place they are ..
1 Million / 4 = 250,000 in each mall ...
How in heaven will u find a parking ..
The real Problem is not the parking .. it's the malls ..
the available places that people can go to ..
The Public Utilities ...
This is the main problem that needs to be solved ..
Okay let the mall charge if they feel that some non-customers are using the parking facility which marrs its genuine customers right. Try following and if that don't work apply fees from zero hour to xxx number of hours.
Parking should be free for 2 hours during week days and 1 hour during weekends. Anybody who has come for shopping should finish their shopping within 2 hours and someone wants to shop for more than 2 hours pay for extra hours. Genuine shppers won't take more than 2 hours in any circumstances.
Like in the airport at the time of entry the camera should issue ticket and count time at the time of exit.
leo-nardo 300 riyal fine + 3 points deducted
noms: on the opposite. what prevents me from going there in week-ends is the struggle for places. it's good for business
incubus: staying home on the sofa, till someday u wake up and realize u missed to live a life: tell me about it!
smoke: open 2-3 exits
happy happy: didn't understand. where is privilege andclassicism in an innovative parking system that spare u hours of nerve breaking begging for a parking place?
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
"if the spot has been taken, or if a car is parked in the wrong spot, the police is summoned to make a contravention for wrong parking (300 QR and 3 points deducted)"
They wouldn't do that, it's not "wrong parking" to the police, it's somebody parked neatly in a parking spot. The police doesn't care about CC assigning spots and people parking in another one.
They don't even care about disabled parking, I usually see cars in the disabled spots (close to 2 entrances) that don't have the disabled badge, and cars with the badge waiting for one of the cars to get out of their parking space.
How about Valet parking ?
For KIAs and Bentleys only !
We'll see, drsam. And I'm against classicism and privileges at parking lots too.
Salam
The souq's parking system is full of sheet! You get it and u take over a freaking hour to get out! Long line of cars waiting to pay. Imagine city center.

Stay home, spend less and be happier...
I am ready to pay but I should get the place.
Sometime it take an hour to get the place over there.
Its unfortunate.
This will gradually effect negative to the business in the Mall outlets.

Most people(locals) will not follow assigned parking slot and what you will have then is chaos. What will you do when you find your slot occupied by a car driven by a lady in ninja suit? They should just display the number of available spot at the parking entrances. It is very easy to count electronically the number of cars goin in and out. I have seen this implemented in one of the mall in my country.
I have a motorbike. Its one of the best decisions I have made in Doha (if I get out alive). I can be anywhere in the city in ten minutes and park right next to entrances. It improves my social life too because I can go out anywhere anytime.
well yes, why not? vip area,...etc
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
They should have differing charges according to how near the mall entrance one parks or perhaps even a special area for KIAs.
each place is marked by line and row numbers.
donno about the airport.
when u enter u get a ticket with the number of the place where u should park (D6, or H11) u go there and park, and place the ticket on the dash board so that the number D6 or H11 can be seen.
if the spot has been taken, or if a car is parked in the wrong spot, the police is summoned to make a contravention for wrong parking (300 QR and 3 points deducted)
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
Please explain to me how paid car park will provide us with a "better service", I really fail to see how. We pay for car park at the Doha airport, yet drivers are still fighting over spaces, right?
All we need is marked spaces for each car spot at the parking lot.
About Souk Wakif, I haven't been there for months, so not sure about you point.
Salam
really something must be done. time is gold! want my money, take it but give something in return. are we in a jungle law? come-on. i do want that point to be dealt with! seriously. what do u get in return of ur money in souk wakef? nothing! = stealing ur money for no service in return.
we're in qatar, in the internet/computer age people!
not in prehistoric barbaria!!
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
It's exactly that quote that made me laugh at the "very innocent" article.

“This is not to MAKE MONEY out of the car park, it is to bring BETTER SERVICE to our customers,”
hope that will be the case.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
but i do suggest that the ticket u receive when entering, contains the parking spot (A11,G23...), and thus u can immediately go to it. than when leaving the computer knows which spot u were in and is now vacant.
1- we won't be fighting for a spot once we're in, nore wander wondering where to park once in.
2- a car parked in a wrong place should be fined (the ticket showing the spot number should be visible)
i was disappointed with souk wakif's system. OK i'm in but where to park?
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
yes! all they think of is how to suck money!
nonetheless, good ideas/taxes that can solve a problem is more than welcome.
the parking issue is meant to deal with the fight for places, making it an organised civil procedure.
the one applied in souk wakef ALAS is like saying to the poor ur not welcome: only who pays enters. nothing has changed! same jam, fighting for places and turning endlessly around.
while if when i pay, i get in return a place, this will be a service given for my money.
i'm not a computer engeneer, but i think it's faisable to assign a place for every entering vehicle.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
This is what you get from brining in "advisors". You get traffic points, then paid car park, and next in line is paid local phone calls...:((
Salam
half the parking space there is occupied by the shopkeepers and the other half by the people working in the nearby offices.
Been there on Saturday after more than a year, and although the parking was packed as hell, I found city centre relatively empty...So i am not sure why...At least with the money they'll be collecting they could think about improving the lighting system inside...I found it quite dull and depressing ! Not going there anytime soon...
welcome ...................Mr Christoph Von Oelhafen
I knew that long time ago... but no idea about the implementation... charge would be QR4/h...
I agree with weekends and evening. I look out the window and they are backed up! Making 3 lanes to get into one entrance! But I have also driven around at about 3pm for 20 minutes or so and had to leave because I was so frustrated! Just surprised that the other day it was so empty.
Surely number of window shopper will drop by this
Normal days,,, yes,,, a lot of parking,,, but at nights n weekdays,,, OMG!
We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.
I usually only go to City centre if I walk over from home. Never usually have to park. But was feeling lazy a few days ago and drove. Plenty of parking spaces! What's going on???
I guess they start in Souq Waqif,,, like an Airport style... there is also for VIP's... for Qr. 100...
We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.
I have refused to go there for almost a year now, and that's purely because of the parking situation. I can't stand to drive around and around for upwards of 25 minutes to find a spot.
It's simpler to shop elsewhere.
Haven't been to the Souk since they implemented paid parking there, but heard from friends that it is just as congested when they've gone there, so no improvement in their opinion.
"Marriage is a wonderful institution...but who wants to live in an institution?" -- Groucho Marx
we neer go there cos of the parking issue .. many a times had to return back after searching a parking lot for more than 1/2 an hour
less parking!!!!
less traffic !!!!
may b
less sale tooo
lol
that is a good move especially for the people who park in the parking and go far away, yayay finally we can go to ciry center
they are just so damned expensive in there!!
Go to LULU just avoid thursday/friday scrum.
taxes for everything-i hope you will not complain too.
We already got same thing in Souq Waqif,,, but still finding parking is Horrible,, Cars everywhere, some don't follow any rules.. "NO ENTRY" "ENTRANCE" "EXIT"
OMG!
We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.
What a relief.
Sometimes when i'm lucky, a cleaning guy over there tells me which spot is going to get vacant imminently and i pay him 5 QR for the service.
But i guess with paid parking, everyone would be queing up to pay hence could cause another mess.
Some parking spaces in S'pore have a system of automatically identifying vacant spots and a board at the entrance displays the number of vacant spots.
Could that be useful here?
