Doha Penguin campaign takes Qatar by storm
Was it a rumour? Could it be real? Was it clever editing?
The secret is out. The Doha Penguin was a marketing campaign for a new fraozen yogurt brand launched recently in Doha.
Three short videos (1, 2, 3) were created by a local agency to get the rumour started, with Twitter and Facebook keeping the excitement going. The city was soon abuzz with talk of the lost seabird, with Al Jazeera and a number of local news outlets carrying the story.
Qatar Living played a huge part in Doha Penguin’s success, and we would like to thank everyone who took part. Ultimately over 70,000 people watched the videos, as far afield as Australia, the US and Far East.
Here is the grand finale:

that advertisement is also a hoax so don't believe it.

They too called it a campaign :O)

what campaign?
I don't think it's clever. I think it's trickery. What people will do to make money has no limit.
This is a nice post thanks for sharing with me.........phentermine
I think they did a very poor job of trying to copy the Al khaliji - "Orange Sightings" campaign of a couple of yaers ago.
So the subject title instead of reading
"Doha Penguin campaign takes Qatar by storm"
should read
"Poorly thought out Doha Penguin hoax campaign causes storm in Qatar".
stupid, crass
It wasn't funny or clever at all.
We had a ridiculous number of emails and phone calls at QAWS asking if we had heard about the loose penguin and requesting we go and help it. We have better things to do with our time then worry about a non-existant penguin for some stupid PR stunt.
Kareena, maybe he has not seen the question...
Is'nt it wrong and illigal to fool public in mass with such foolish AD's... I don't know, but if it was USA or India I would have suied the company for making me believe something that's not there and wasting my valuable time hunting for these penguines with my camera everytime I visited waters in Qatar.
very funny Nomerci and well said.. Over to you Brit.. Answer her..
brit....please, with all due respect.....why do you, in pretty much every thread ,talk about your apparent "needs" and how you tend to relive them? Not that I mind, I am just curious.....do you plan on dealing with those, apprently very pressing issues, at some point in the near future so that you will be able to concentrate at the posts at hand? (no, not IN hand;) )
Did you by any chance see Rizks at the Karak Chai booth. You couldn't miss him because the Lungi still had the bicycle clip on :O(
Yes I was also with a personal trainer which I can not name on QL. But we were both looking for that Penguin so thats why I could not stop and talk to you..:)
I was there jogging with my Italian personal trainer - Soniya mileortwo.. Once I'd warmed up the muscles , I went to the Ramada feeling Ting-Ling all over :O)
And the Al Jazeera channel was also a part of the campaign?
MBK u knucle head !britey was there with Lyang Lee playin catcher catcher...:)
I have been going to Corniche every day since this rumour started to capture a shot of this famous Penguin. The best I have manged to do was caught a glimpse of Britexpat last night walking leisurely on the Corniche. Now Britexpat don't tell me you were also looking for the penguin.

Oh ok...I never thought of it in that way. Well come to think of it, no one I know personally ever vouched for having seen the fella. Yeah you could be right. The campaign still sucks though!
...or was it an extempore campaign by the agency? Identifying the opportunity spot on and taking full advantage of the buzz generated by the spotted penguin on doha corniche. I think the ad campaign fails to leave an image of the product in consumer's mind. For me, I can't recall what the product was until I go back to watch the video again.Does the advert induce consumers to go back and watch the campaign again? If it was a Guerrilla marketing campaign, not sure.
There was never a real penguin Fatima. The penguin is fake. It was all "clever" editing (in my opinion poor editing because it was VERY obvious from video one).
Not sure what the fuss is all about. Penguins can and do live in warm climates.
Not even sure where the animal cruelty part fits in all of this.
I guess many of us figured out the whole thing was staged and the poor penguine "planted" there. Must admit I never thought it to be any campaign though, I just thought some "exotic pet" owner decided to abandon his pet at the corniche. Must say as a campaign it sucks though, and considering the climate may even border on animal cruelty. PETA, you listening?
The whole campaign can be described in one word..FUGLY
The poor little penguin..he must have been very confused and scared. I for one will not touch that frozen yoghurt...for sure.
Brilliant...last one made me laugh. Great advertising, and had loads of people going. Sure everyone watch the last one, so job done by the agency.
@Rizks i think you mean King Dong?Nice marketing, must say very original. Lying to people is normal in the marketing world, adverts always "bend the truth" so no i do not agree that they are loosers but actually quite original, hell even A Jazeera had it aired.
College Students? As Ad's go that is rubbish. Sorry :-(
I was just annoyed by the whole thing. Also I have no memory of the product brand or location and thus as far as I am concerned was a complete failure.
I think it was silly and naive campaign.... to lie for the people for marketing purposes..... losers ...
Perhaps I'm getting a bit long in the tooth, but I don't think the videos would really make me relate the two :O(
next would be King Kong for marketing blue pills....:(
whats next? polar bears in Doha
I said it looked fake the whole time.
Of the frozen yogurt brand?
hmmmm confused now
