Dubai hotel issues etiquette guide after sex on the beach scandal

From Times Online
November 11, 2008

The Burj Al Arab Hotel Dubai - with the moated and beachside Madinat Jumeirah hotel behind

Ginny McGrath
One of Dubai’s most popular beach hotels has issued guests with an “etiquette guide” after two Britons were convicted for having sex on the beach near the hotel.

The etiquette guides, which suggest the hotel’s guests could be arrested for inappropriate public displays, are left on tables during the weekly brunch event at the Madinat Jumeirah hotel.

The guests should "employ discretion" in expressing affection publicly, says the hotel, with "anything more than a peck on the cheek" likely to result in police involvement.

The two Britons convicted last month of having sexual intercourse outside marriage and offending public decency, were Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors. They were arrested after attending brunch at a hotel near Dubai airport.

Gipsy: What's the prob of kissing each of the cheaks on a girls face? It's pretty common at Portugal to kiss girls faces and shake hands to men

That's the crux of the issue really - people have chosen to go on holiday to these places and should have researched their destination before booking it. If they don't like the rules imposed then they should never have gone their in the first place.

You make an excellent point. Why go somewhere to enjoy yourself when you don't agree with their rules/laws/regulations/culture.

As an aside. Saudi Arabia has a small tourism industry, where "groups" comprising adults above a certain age are chaperoned to various sites of interest. I was surprised that anyone actually pays to be part of this group.

QS, I like it when we disagree. But I am not violating any customs. I decide not to go there if they tell me how to behave. I am not used to anyone telling me anything. Sorry.

Also Canadians are sex in public types either. I still get uncomfortable when people give me the double cheek kiss!

Its just a PR exercise by the hotel and perhaps a means of getting brownie points with the government.

I find it all very strange that "adults", no matter from which country cannot take into condideration the "norms" and "culture" of a country they are visiting.

I remember going to Spain years ago and getting embarrased at the drunken and loutish behaviour by the Brits and the Germans.

MD, this time I have to disagree with you. You have to respect the rules of the place where you live, work, and spend your holiday. Some places are more open, some places are more strict, but obviously all of them have their own rules.

I would say, etiquette guide is a good move, as people who come to visit this country have to know about certain restrictions and not to get into trap of their own unawareness…

and again, I don't think having sex in public place would welcomed even in Canada or somewhere in Holland after having couple of 'cigarettes'

I like to think they're going down a route, any route, and that someone knows what it is, cos I'm struggling to see what it is at the moment!

Well I can't say it's a great move to attract tourism, but hey, I guess they don't need it.

I like to think Qatar are going down the cultural route and/or preferring to be the Financial centre for the ME and also a sort of 'Switzerland' for International meetings between West and East dignitaries.

I seem to be here during the summer months - just the way it's panned out.

However, when we DO take our hols we usually go to Scotland where hub's mum lives. It's a bit too cold and Presbyterian for topless bathing in the Firth of Forth up there ;o)

jauntie - Qatar really don't appear to be trying very hard to attract tourism! The hotels and facilities here really aren't up to Dubai's standards when it comes to attracting tourists looking for sun, sea and sand resorts (though you pay a lot more to stay in the ones in Dubai).

By anonymous• 13 Nov 2008 11:23

jauntie, so you probably stay in Qatar during the summer holidays, as I do. Mabruk. Or do you go to any of the decadent Western countries?

It's good they are doing this. I'd like to see the same in Qatar to clear up any confusion. Leaflets or posters at the mall explaining the respectful dress code would certainly help, or even people posted around to politely point out that what someone is wearing is inappropriate.

However, I don't think these leaflets at the Dubai hotels would have helped in the Michelle Palmer case. She'd lived there for something like two years so could hardly plead ignorance to the rules!

3.Emad: If you click on the link you will see a beautiful arial view of the hotel and beachside. The second picture shown in the newspaper is of the lady who got into trouble. Actually she's rather attractive! :D

notfromhere: Yes! Many just don't know when to quit if the alcohol 'appears' to be free with the meal.

MagicDragon: Not sure I want them here either! I sincerely hope Qatar doesn't go down the Dubai route to attract tourism. I like it the way it is at the moment with alcohol limited to hotels and set hours etc.

I think they do the right thing. The Western tourists should go somewhere else. Dubai doesn't need them. (Dubai doesn't want them). If you would tell me how to behave during my holidays I would not consider to visit you for a second. Hopefully their strategy works.
