Dubai Overtakes Cairo in Traffic Congestion. Doha is 4th

I received this interesting email today.

GulfTalent.com's latest survey results on the regional traffic problem have been released.

Key highlights of the survey include:

• Professionals working in Dubai spend on average 1 hour and 45 minutes each day commuting, the highest figure in the region
• Cairo is in second place in the traffic rankings with 1 hour and 33 minutes, while Jeddah residents enjoy the lowest reported commute time in the region at just 46 minutes per day
• Doha residents report 56 minutes average commute time per day for the round trip to work
• The study surveyed professionals in 14 Middle Eastern cities during May 2007. Details of traffic levels in each city are available in the survey report.

What is interesting to me is that Dubai is aware of the problem and has been doing measures to alleviate this. Is Qatar doing the same before we experience what Dubai has gone through?
At 56 minutes average round trip per day in Doha, how much time do you spend on the road?

Round about must be a British Idea.

There are more Round abouts in this country than any where else.

In fact, very unique roundabouts can be found only in UK.

For an example!

MAGIC ROUNDABOUT IN SWINDON!

It is the only one of this kind in the whole world.

It is called magic roundabout because it has five roundabouts around one round about.

Negotiating this roundabout is itself a great talent. You should be a great Driver!

Usually the DVLA (UK Driving Licensing Authority) Inspectors of Swindon make the students to negotiate this R/A if they don't like the students!...Lol.

Obviously, the result is well known.

Does any other part of world has anything like this R/A?

No Ram, roundabouts aren't Indian ideas. In India you might find them only (and very rarely) in quaint suburban streets.

Roundabouts work very well in low to moderate traffic and ONLY when traffic entering is uniform from all directions.

Intelligent traffic lights (SCATS) is the only solution for Doha. The infrastructure is in place but not utilised due differences between the roads dept. and Qtel.

u still remember the crazy roundabout ... i brought up here in qatar and i know the thrill of it .. it was like 2 roundabouts in each other .. it was really confusing causing the most accidents in qatar ... thank god i was not driving that time .. i was still a kid in the school .. but then they changed it to traffic lights .. i guess it should be changed from 20 years ago . but i guess that it was just changed in the last 5 years .. or 7 as max. i can't remember exactly as i was outside Qatar for 7 years ..

One thing here in Doha is that driving never gets boring as you always have to be alert lest a zooming SUV crashes on to you! I have driven in other countries but its here in Doha that I have never felt sleepy while driving. :)

For those who don't know you can blame the British for Doha roads - we designed the master plan aswell as Kuwait etc.- yes amazingly one existed, major issue is that after our influence drained it was never updated and didn't grow with the style / volume of traffic. R/A work very well in a discplined, road driving wise, location - Qatar doesn't qualify since people buy licenses, drive to fast, are to impatient, have another landcruiser at home anyway, don't know that those white markings on the road mark the lane you are meant to drive in and not only for decoration...... then there is the police parling on R/As - what an example..... and they only book you for talking on mobiles, not dangerous driving or anything like that!

I pleasently remeber the thrill of Crazy R/A in Doha, anybody else?

Have more road signals? Have you tried to drive allong the start of C -ring? Now takes longer to get from the Hamad to Ramamda lights than every before....... D-ring were synchronised for a while, please do the same for C-ring - is this too much to ask??

sod off richard ;)LOL... i didn't get brain damaged.

you can't sneak that one in. But I do like France and the French.

roundabouts didn't take off in the states because their big fat silly cars couldn't go round them and they are used to driving on a numbered grid system and you can't build a drive in fast food joint on a roundabout.

roundabouts work well to keep traffic flowing when there is not too much traffic - in a small town or urban suburb. Ram - doha traffic has outgrown roundabouts so now there are junctions with traffic lights. Then the traffic density is too high for those - we get flyovers.

Because the majority of drivers in Doha (particulalry those in vans) do not know how to follow the little white lines, or do not know that the lane with the straight arrow means go straight, left arrow, go left etc., ??? AND NOT the arrow means wander over into my lane!!!

The first known roundabout for traffic was Columbus Circle in New York City. The idea did not take off in the US but it was an idea eagerly taken up by the British who love everything American. Roundabouts are also popular in France. This is because although the French hate everything American, the British and French (who claim to hate each other) actually have an enduring love affair with each others country.

Roundabouts seem to work well in the UK and in France where the standard of driving is high. Here they are a disaster.

Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. Mahatma Gandhi

and when you re in a lil' toyota camry waiting at the roundabaout flanked by monster 4x4 s thats really scary.............

I heared from one of my friends that it was an indian Idea .. is that true? is there any roundabouts in india .. in egypt we don't have it at all not even traffic lights.. hehehe ..

I mean why they don't convert all the round abouts to trafiic lights ... with equevalent timer ..

The most funny thing is when u find a traffic officer on a roundabout then u know that u gonna spend most of ur day just there .. i swear if they left it it would have gone much easier and faster .. My left leg now is much stronger than the right one .. as i'm always pumping the clutch and it's spoiled 3 times since i bought my car in the begining of this year .. i guess i need to get an automatic transmission ..

I would think that 40 minutes of the 56 are spent at roundabouts, why on earth does this place have so many roundabouts? Are traffic signals in short supply? Do Qataris just like going round in circles?
