On March 29 2008 at 8:00 p.m. local time the lights will go out, for 60 minutes known as Earth Hour. Everyone around the world is being asked to turn out their power for one hour to combat climate change and global warming.
Heishi I sell you some quicksilver at a very cheap price. "Every once in a while, declare peace -- it confuses the hell out of your enemies." - Quark quotes a Rule of Acquisition, "The Homecoming"
You make a good point bringing up the mecury issues introduced by CFLs. Such is the case for many of the regulations supposedly intended to help the environment.
I love the cold climate, I love the snow and Ice. I cant wait for Doha to receive the first snows in record and history. I will start my snow and ice dance, instead of the rain dance. As all the weather pros know the farts of the Dinarsors was responsible for their extinction and a climate change in thos days, only the poor beasts were not awaer of this perhaps this is the reason we have the climate change again today but we are aware of it. lol lol lol
Well, We got "el Nino, " and "La Nina", all weather related names. I was wondering, What is "the Bear" weather pattern is all about ? For better or worse I got a bunch of balloons full of Hoax ready to be launch to study the atmosphere. I will informed you later of the information I find out. Too make matters worse, I got to fart real hard, that would cause a serious weather disturbance related to this subject. "Every once in a while, declare peace -- it confuses the hell out of your enemies." - Quark quotes a Rule of Acquisition, "The Homecoming"
Its very very easy to get deceived. Since the Global warming theorist say the heating up of the environment makes the earth both hot and cold? And they take every climatic change to suggest this.
- The Truth is if there is Global Warming the earth has to become more hot as the so called gases get trapped within the atmosphere and keeps the heat from dissipating. The result has to make the Earth more and more hot and not cold .......and that too rapidly (since the industries are increasing). But over 100 years they just 0.74 ± 0.18 °C
Trees need CO2 to survive! Just as we need Oxygen. They would not survive in an atmosphere without CO2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trees
"While ground nutrients are essential to a tree's growth the majority of its biomass comes from carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere (see photosynthesis)."
Water Vapour:
Water Vapour is the Gaseous state of Water. If Water Vapour is bad then so is Water!!!!
The condensation of water vapor to the liquid or ice phase is responsible for clouds, rain, snow which count among the most significant elements of what we experience as weather.
The changes the climate have gone through are exactly how weather operates. Sometimes midly, sometimes harshly. Man was always at the mercy of the Weather. Man has not yet mastered the Weather. Man cannot even predict Weather (although any village nerd can say if it would rain today) say a couple of months into the future. (NASA keeps postponing the satellite take off date and time most of the time......dont they?)
Even I was on the Global Warming Side until I started looking up on the situation.
Its time to wake up and educated ourselves about the subject.....rather than listen to what the NewsReader tells you.
If you're a visual person you need to stop by our video section. Tons of new videos and never a late fee. Just added is Professor Bob Carter (Australian geologist) with an excellent science based presentation on why global warming isn't man's fault. His facts and logic will be very difficult to dispute.
Proposed Climate Tampering Could Kill Millions
Some scientists are so convinced that man-made global warming is now unstoppable and harmful that they are proposing to artificially tamper with the atmosphere to "fix it". If we truly are heading in to a period of low solar activity (cooling), as NASA and many others have predicted, this god like action to slow "global warming" could kill millions from cold and starvation.

Record Antarctic Ice Extent, Concentration, and Growth Continues
While the global warming hoaxsters continue to lie about Antarctic ice melting the latest satellite data shows record ice. Not only record ice but a third more ice than average for this time of the year. The Arctic is also doing well.

Haitians Eating Mud Cookies Due To Our Use Of Ethanol
Hopefully everyone is already aware of the extreme cost the world's poor are paying for our boutique fuels made from corn. The mainstream media mentions it occasionally but never emotionally and never asking for an end to biofuel use. That might run the risk of helping oil companies and admitting that the environmentalists were dead wrong on this issue. Not only does ethanol production use more energy than it produces it also doesn't help reduce greenhouse gases. Now we find out that biofuels have caused food prices to rise so much that Haitians have had to resort to eating cookies made out of clay mud.

If The Globe Is Warming Why Are The Oceans Not?
You may hear environmental groups tell you that the Antarctic ice is melting, that polar bears are near extinction, or that the oceans are warming. If you believe that the earth is warming, and there might be some evidence to support that theory (though it is all natural), then its easy to believe those statements. But none of them are true.

Polar Bear CO2 Regulations Will Cost YOU Thousands Of Dollars
The Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are likely to very soon list the polar bear as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. This move will likely end up costing every man, woman, and child in the U.S. thousands of dollars per year and vastly expand the powers of these agencies. The claim is that global warming is melting the Arctic ice, so anything that produces CO2 will be highly regulated.

More Antarctic Drama Put In Context - Early 1900's Explorer Proves The Antarctic Is Growing
Hardly a day goes by where the news isn't blasting us with more examples of something or another melting. The Good Humor Ice Cream Man must be scared to death! The problem is that neither the scientific community nor the popular news media put these reports in proper context. In the current Antarctic example the news makes it sound like the Antarctic is rapidly melting and we can expect "sea-level rises of several meters". This couldn't be further from the truth.

Record Cold Could Be Just Around The Corner - Years Of Cold Temperatures Just Ahead
Breakout your parkas and crank-up another SUV, according to new NASA measurements we're heading in to a period of solar activity (or inactivity) that could mean years of much colder temperatures. The last time this natural cycle occurred world-wide death rates doubled and perhaps millions starved or died from the cold. This time around could be just as bad.
"Hmm, so by living here in Qatar I am supporting the evil oil industry...so does that mean if i live in America I am supporting the evil tobacco industry? whew..what a stretch you are making.."
What stretch? Your comparative analysis skills seems to be lacking. Personally I don't think the tobacco industry is "evil," but that's a different discussion. You may have not noticed but there are a LOT of industries in the USA, tobacco being just one of tens of thousands.
How many industries are there in Qatar? ONE, or perhaps two if you want to separate oil and gas. With regard to the current discussion the two are part of the same "evil" bag though.
Anybody, ANYBODY, that lives or works in Qatar directly supports big oil and gas. That's all there is to it. Either you work directly for an oil/gas company or you work for a support company. If you're a teacher then the parents of the kids you teach work for big oil/gas. If you're a construction worker you build buildings used either directly by oil/gas or used by support organizations, like the aforementioned schools for expats. If you work in Education City you are training the new leaders of the Qatari oil/gas industry. Every time you go shopping or out to dinner you support the oil/gas industry in Qatar. All of the money that exists in the Qatari economy is produced by ONE, and only ONE thing - oil/gas.
See, money doesn't grow on trees. It is a representation of work. It has to be produced by a resource that is sold. You can engineer a new toy or car, sell corn, sell oil, whatever. But something has to be produced. Money and wealth comes from the production of things - not the consumption.
All the money in Qatar comes from only one place. No matter who you work for, that's where your paycheck came from.
The same cannot be said for big tobacco and the USA. The only people who support big tobacco are those who buy tobacco products. Because, you see, all the money in the USA doesn't come from tobacco production. But all the money in Qatar DOES come from oil/gas production.
Long-term through ventures such as Education City and the Science and Technology Park the Qataris very intelligently hope to diversify their economy into other things, but they are a long way away from realizing that dream.
This is great fun. I love it when people get so emotional...
Miss Scarlett,
"I know what I know from research and experience"
Do please share that research and experience with us.
"learn basic meterology"
Actually, I have. Have you? This statement implies that you have. I think you are making stuff up. For example, let's discuss the issue of the ozone hole that you brought up.
Apparently your "research and experience" hasn't taught you that there is no permanent hole in the ozone layer and no ozone shortage. Ozone is repeatedly created and destroyed by the interaction of ultraviolet radiation with oxygen molecules. In the stratosphere (10 to 40 km above the Earth's surface) several tons of ozone are produced every second.
The amount of ozone present at any given time depends on many things, primarily the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the stratosphere, which in turn depends upon latitude, solar cycle, and season. Concentrations of ozone vary drastically from one day to the next, sometimes by as much as 50 percent, depending on the weather. Ozone holes are natural reactions to UV light variations. Ozone levels are also affected by the amount of volcanic matter in the stratosphere. Each volcanic eruption emits roughly a thousand times the amount of ozone depleting chemicals, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), than all of man has ever produced. One volcano - boom!
So if you are worried about ozone holes there is literally NOTHING you can do about them. Kill every person on the planet and it would have no effect on ozone holes.
"You made me laugh with your simple comments...no, CO2 is not what I was speaking of..its the exhaust of cars, carbon monoxide, exhaust from plastics plants, air conditioner coolants such as freon, etc that are pollution"
Well, you didn't specify what you were referring to. I thought we were talking about global warming?? Now you're changing the subject. Global warming is all about CO2 - nothing else. Apparently you aren't aware but the two primary bi-products of hydrocarbon combustion are CO2 and H2O, a.k.a. carbon dioxide and water! So since we're talking about global warming the only relevant "pollutant" is CO2. Again, your "research and experience" is failing to impress me.
"And what's this BS about the US keeping 3rd world countries from having electricity???"
Here is a quote: "The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States: We can't let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization, we have in the U.S. We have to stop these Thrid World countries right where they are." - Michael Oppenheimer, Environmental Defense Fund
The attacks against the third world are all too real. They are being forced to use expensive light bulbs, solar power, etc. Environmental regulations are preventing them from building steel and other large industries required for development. And these regulations do not come from within, they are imposed by the U.N., USA, E.U., etc. It comes in the form of bribing corrupt dictators. It comes in the form of aid with environmental regulation strings attached. This is fact.
"can you say conspiracy theory or paranoid maniac??"
Ok, then please explain what's going on all over the world.
Most recently the incandescent light bulb was banned in the USA. Starting in 2012 the incandescent light bulb will be illegal in the United States of America. The American Revolution was started over a 2% tax on just tea!!!! Now we are losing the freedom to use a perfectly good light bulb. This is a very slippery slope. Sure, this light bulb in of itself might not be that big of a deal. But it's the fact that in the name of "global warming" we have lost this small amount of freedom. And it certainly doesn't start or stop with that. And people don't seem to understand how far-reaching the affects of just this is. Sure, it's just an incandescent light bulb. But you know what, there is a WHOLE INDUSTRY behind the incandescent light bulb. That industry has to a large extent been federalized. The end results are the same.
As history has shown time and time again this will come back to bite us in a very big way. The "global warming" movement is on the forefront of socializing the world. They want to eradicate private property, nationalize all the private industries, regulate child birth to decrease the world population, and force a marxist-style "green" utopia on everyone.
It's quote time. Let's see what the activists are saying.
"Climate change (provides) the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world." "No matter if the science is all phony, there are still collateral environmental benefits" to global warming policies. - Christine Stewart, Canada's former environmental minister.
"To capture the public imagination, we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention any doubts one might have. Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest." - Stephen Schneider, lead 2007 UN IPCC report author and climate change alarmist.

Kyoto is the "first component of an authentic global governance." - Jacques Chirac, the president of France

first and formost..I am not your "hon"...don't go there.
Trust me, i am not blissfully ignorant, just don't get all worked up over little things like you do. Never claimed to know everything, nor was I boasting..you must be looking in the mirror. I know what I know from research and experience. I've also learned that "facts" can be manipulated. I am not like you in that you feel the need to constantly post long soloquies to make yourself look important. Unfortunately..I have to in this case, just to answer some of your accusations.
The effects of global warming don't just go one direction, learn basic meterology..its a ripple effect, thus making winters worse just as summers are a bit harder. If you would look into HOW weather worked perhaps you'd know that. No, its not going to happen over night..but then again, nothing in nature ever does. I don't really wish to live 100 years, but i do wish to have a nice place for my children to live.
You made me laugh with your simple comments...no, CO2 is not what I was speaking of..its the exhaust of cars, carbon monoxide, exhaust from plastics plants, air conditioner coolants such as freon, etc that are pollution...As far as giving you a list of bullet fact, quite honestly, I don't have to give you anything..1), you won't want to hear it and 2), you aren't worth my time and effort, due to number one.
And what's this BS about the US keeping 3rd world countries from having electricity??? and socialism...geez...can you say conspiracy theory or paranoid maniac?? Ok if not, then hopefully you can spell it, you are going to need it if you keep up this form of thinking.
nope..actually not a supporter of Kyoto protocol. you assumed and generalized...bad call.
Hmm, so by living here in Qatar I am supporting the evil oil industry...so does that mean if i live in America I am supporting the evil tobacco industry? whew..what a stretch you are making..
The point of Earth day is NOT to save the world in one hour, but more of a signal that some of us are willing to help in whatever manner we can..any step in the right direction is movement forward.
AbuAmerican...so what do you think influences the "solar influences"?? Check with an Australian as to how their ozone is constantly depleting and the efforts they have to put into protecting themselves from the sun due to that. Unless of course you want to put us in the category of the dinosaurs and the meteor...
Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. --Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
Scarlet says "Personally, I don't need facts and figures to know something is happening in our world." Who is burying what in the sand?
Seriously, what is the point of having a conversation with a blissfully ignorant person? You know nothing about the science or facts yet you think you know everything? And you're boasting this? Profoundly absurd.
What you "believe" or "feel" is irrelevant.
The weather is a variable thing. What about that don't you understand? It has always changed. There is nothing new about this and that's the whole point. It goes up, it goes down, it gets hot, it gets cold. Back in the 70's people were all afraid of "global cooling." Now it has changed to "global warming." There is no evidence for it.
First show me what the problem is, then show me how it's humanity's fault? The burden of proof is with you. You say a problem exists, ok, what is the problem? You vaguely suggest it is raining all over the place, hot summers, etc. First of all, more rain is a good thing for much of the world - like Qatar. So how is that bad? Second, I don't believe you. Show me where it has been hotter. I want numbers. You realize that the most diehard global warming fanatics only claim that the "average" temperature has increased by about 1 degree in the past 100 years? Have you been alive for 100 years? Are you even capable of noticing an average increase of 1 degree? NO, YOU AREN'T!!!!
Where is this phantom problem? Please show it to me.
The evidence shows that CO2 is irrelevant and it's all about solar patterns, which makes sense wouldn't you say? And what are the solar scientists saying? Well, they say we have had some very small amount of warming recently because of increased solar activity. But they think we might be headed for some very cold weather soon because of downward solar trends.
You say "The fact that this was the coldest winter Qatar has had is a very good indication of how the atmosphere is swinging wildly back and forth..Global warming doesn't just affect the summer....think further than the end of your nose"
Did you just use the word COLD? I thought things were supposed to get WARM... make up your mind.
Please name these "huge changes" in weather over the past 50 years. Please give me a bullet list of the huge changes. Take your time, you'll need it.
Turing out the lights isn't going to do anything. The power your lights consume is literally insignificant. Everybody in the world could go without lights forever and it wouldn't amount to even a drop in the entire ocean of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Your prosition is like that of a little kid. You aren't influencing anything. If you pulled your head out of the sand and took a look at those "facts and figures" you choose to ignore this would be plainly obvious.
You say "go ahead and use up all the resources and pollute"
This is classic. Do you know what CO2 is? Pollute? You exhale CO2 hon. You are aware of this aren't you? If you believe CO2 is a pollutant then please stop breathing.
"I, for one, intend to do my part to help save this planet"
Go ahead. But you still haven't explained what there is to save or how your actions will have any effect on it. You're an absolute hypocrite. By even living in the Middle East you're an absolute hypocrite. Anybody that lives and works in Qatar is supporting the "evil" oil and gas industry.
I'm sure you're a big supporter of the Kyoto protocol. Right? Are you a part of that hypocrisy as well? Did you know that not a single Kyoto-signing country has even remotely lived up to its emissions reductions? Not only have they not reduced emissions but just the E.U. increased by 6% from 2000-2004. The U.S. increased by only 0.7% even though it didn't sign on with Kyoto. And that's all despite higher population growth and higher economic growth.
People who don't buy into this nonesense say, "well what's the harm?" What's the harm? Socialism - that's the harm! Why would you support a made-up religious movement designed specifically to seize power away from people? What is the U.N. keeping itself busy with these days? In the name of "global warming" countries like the USA are preventing third world countries from developing. "Sorry, we won't allow you to have electricity because of global warming." This Orweillian nonsense is a cancer that's spreading all over the world. It's being used as a pretext to seize power over private companies, private land, etc., all over the west. It's a new excuse for corrupt politicians to force their will on you.
And how about just the money? Trillions of dollars are being spent to fix a problem that doesn't exist. What is this doing? It drives up prices, lowers incomes, employs worthless environmentalist bureacrats that bleed economies rather than contributing to them.
Its not going to be simultaneous then, is it? Well, I guess in Doha it will not be conspicuous, with the number of people following this being very few. ( I think).
Although I dont buy into the global warming theory at all, it wont harm to have the natural resources last a few minutes longer.........

you know, a bucket is filled by first adding that one drop of water...so what's it hurt to start by turning off your electricity for one hour? To me its more of a show that people are willing to help fix the world.
And as far as global warming is concerned..I believe it. Have experienced such huge changes in weather over the past 50 years, its amazing..and NOT in a good way...raining more than usual or in places that never rained before, much hotter summers all over the world, snowing at strange times of year...and look at Australia with the lowest ozone protection in the entire world, from the sun. Personally, I don't need facts and figures to know something is happening in our world..its very visible. The fact that this was the coldest winter Qatar has had is a very good indication of how the atmosphere is swinging wildly back and forth..Global warming doesn't just affect the summer....think further than the end of your nose. (sorry harsha..this was aimed at heishi's comments)
Heishi, if you choose to bury your head in the sand and ignore the Earth's changing atmosphere, then go ahead and use up all the resources and pollute as much as you want...I, for one, intend to do my part to help save this planet we ALL live on...one step at a time. Your comment about this being a conspiracy is rubbish...

whoa.. u r talkin about serious debatin dude.. but seriously.. switchin off teh power for 1 hour.. wat happens with that.. does it help reduce global warming by any chance..
It is truly sad in this day and age that people can be so easily duped. Anthropogenic Global Warming is the greatest fraud perpetuated on mankind. Can you please explain to me the science behind the supposed man-made warming? I challenge you to a debate right here and now.
I assert you cannot provide ONE piece of empirical data showing than man is responsible for the supposed warming.
How much of the atmosphere is made of "greenhouse" gasses? About 1-2%
What are the greenhouse gasses? 95% is water vapor. 3% is CO2. 2% is other.
How much of the CO2 is natural vs. manmade? 97% is natural, coming from oceans, volcanoes, whatever. Only 3% is manmade, which is everything from cars to cow farts.
So you're talking about 3% of 3% of 1-2%.
Humans are supposedly responsible for 1/4 of 1% (0.0025) of the "greenhouse effect"
If you go and study the Earth CO2 records you'll find that CO levels were several times higher than they are today millions of years before humans even existed on the Earth. And the temperatures weren't higher as a result. See the Cambrian and Jurassic periods.
If you study the Earth's temperature records you'll find a constant up-and-down cycle. Temperatures have been much, much higher in the past than they are today. The Earth was warmer during the Roman Empire and the Medieval times. It then took a dive around 1300 years ago and the Earth went into what is known as the "little ice age." We are still coming out of that cold period.
Oceans are a reservoir for CO2. When the temperature increases the oceans release CO2. When the temperature decreases it absorbs CO2.
Even if there were evidence for manmade warming, what is it that you propose to do? Oh wow, you turned the lights out for an hour, that's going to have a real impact. Humanity could literally throw itself back into the stone age and it would have an immeasurable impact. Please tell us all what it is that you propose to do? What needs to be done to solve what problem exactly? Let me ask you a question. Say we do something drastic. Say everybody in the world stops driving cars. Can you tell me what kind of an impact that will have on man's total CO2 contibution? Remember, CO2 comes from power plants, industrial plants, cows and other farm animals, etc. How much of it comes from just automobiles? And then how much will that decrease world CO2 levels by? Hehe. I look forward to your answer. You'll find that it will do absolutely nothing.
There is ZERO evidence for manmade warming - nada. I challenge anybody reading this to produce some. On the contrary there is a TON of evidence against it.
Has there been any warming? Over the past century there has been a very small amount of warming, in the neighborhood of 1-2 degrees. Has this warming been bad? Absolutely not. It has been a good thing.
What is the cause? Well where does all our energy come from? THE SUN! And this has been shown time and time again.
What about in recent times? Well this past winter was the coldest we've had in quite a while, with record snow seasons all over the world, even snow in Baghdad. What about the tropical storm season? One of the most inactive for the past 20-30 years.
None of the global warming predictions have come true. Despite all the hype and rhetoric the weather man still can't even reliably predict tomorrow's weather. People buying into this are real saps.
And what is the global warming movement doing? Well, they are preventing third world countries from developing. They are making huge socialist power grabs over free countries. Global warming is a political and religious movement designed to enslave people. Good-intentioned ignorant people are signing right up for it.
The Muslim world should avoid this nonsense like the plague. It's no different than communism. It attacks your faith, your sovereignty, and your energy-driven economy. This is a real conspiracy that you should be afraid of.
Earth Hour is a serious global movement created to take a stand against the greatest threat the earth has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. It looks like it's going to be really big. So far, Sydney, Chicago, Manila, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Brisbane and Toronto all turning off their lights for an hour. It would be great if Doha can join them but it is unlikely. So the "Earth Hour" in Doha is optional.
To sign up go to http://www.earthhour.org/sign-up there are 37 signed up in Qatar so far.

So you support big oil/gas. Welcome to the club!

"Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental." - Dave Forman, founder of Earth First
Kyoto is the "first component of an authentic global governance." - Jacques Chirac, the president of France
"Giving society cheap, abundant energy...would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun." - Paul Ehrlich, environmentalist, current president of Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford
"If I were reincarnated, I would wish to be returned to Earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels." - Prince Phillip, World Wildlife Fund
"Every time someone dies as a result of floods in Bangladesh, an airline executive should be dragged out of his office and drowned." - George Monbio, environmentalist author
"Free enterprise really means rich people get richer. They have the freedom to exploit and psychologically rape their fellow human beings in the process... Capitalism is destroying the earth." first and formost..I am not your "hon"...don't go there.

But they think we might be headed for some very cold weather soon because of downward solar trends.
http://ibdeditorial.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=287279412587175
And you ask why not go along with it?
:( so you`re not gonna join us for the "ABSOLUTE"night on the 27th then?

you know, a bucket is filled by first adding that one drop of water...so what's it hurt to start by turning off your electricity for one hour? To me its more of a show that people are willing to help fix the world.
And as far as global warming is concerned..I believe it. Have experienced such huge changes in weather over the past 50 years, its amazing..and NOT in a good way...raining more than usual or in places that never rained before, much hotter summers all over the world, snowing at strange times of year...and look at Australia with the lowest ozone protection in the entire world, from the sun. Personally, I don't need facts and figures to know something is happening in our world..its very visible. oh i just checkd out the site... or switchin off lights & appliances when not in use means.. 5% lesser emissions annually....
whoa.. u r talkin about serious debatin dude.. but seriously.. switchin off teh power for 1 hour.. wat happens with that.. does it help reduce global warming by any chance..
Good Morning,
Earth Hour is a serious global movement created to take a stand against the greatest threat the earth has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
