Elections in any country or in country polities will be depending on the sentiments of the people . the Politian’s or world leaders should understand the mass or people sentiments .
people sentiments can change anything in this world and it’s so power to do so…..
We must not forget one thing, who ever is voted for, does not have absolute power...even if he/she wants to do certain things, he/she has to go through numerous channels and gain their approval...and THAT is where it gets tricky.
In most countries , the voter is only interested in Economy, Jobs, Crime, Health and cost of fuel. So, each party will focus on that.
What Obama is doing is appealing to certain groups to ensure that he gets their vote. In the last election it was the African Americans (via the help of Oprah) :O)
since ages republican were against abortion, immigration and same sex marriage. these issues are constantly used within ur own party to pack the herd from straying far from bases.
the campaign Motor, must be a bigger issue.
reducing spending v/s expanding the economy
wall street harnessing v/s capitalism
maybe ecology (offshore drillings, alaska, alternative energies)
"the Politian’s or world leaders should understand the mass or people sentiments"
that is true.
french elections (today as well as presidential weeks ago) is a clear example. french were preoccupied by the european crisis. sarkozy and hollande knew it; sarkozy tried to shift public attention to security issues (toulouse serial killer, ...) french didn't bite it; left won and still winning big time.
i wonder what are the americans' priorities going into the straight line before elections. is it economics, helath, politics,..?
sentiments is only till the election gets done. After that the big businesses and corporates get into the picture and along with the elected persons start looting the public exchequer.
he just want to be elected. now the greeks are not blind. they know. and yet, they are helpless.
the government of Greece had also for many years misreported the country's official economic statistics. At the beginning of 2010, it was discovered that Greece had paid Goldman Sachs and other banks hundreds of millions of dollars in fees since 2001, for arranging transactions that hid the actual level of borrowing. The purpose of these deals made by several successive Greek governments, was to enable them to continue spending, while hiding the actual deficit from the EU. Greece from 2000-2010 had exceeded the Euros stability criteria, with the yearly deficits exceeding the recommended maximum limit at 3.0% of GDP, and also the debt level clearly exceeding the recommended limit at 60% of GDP.
as brit said the choice is so minimum, back home for us also its like lesser of two evils, and whoever wins forgets about the people until its time for next election.
maybe it's just a ploy to get elected. And once seated, knowing the reality as required to survive, the leader need to take the bitter pills for the sake of the WHOLE country, or suffer bankruptcy that will let all to suffer.
but time is crucial britexpat. if greece fails to honor it's engagement, it might spill over to the other european countries that are in a similar critical situation like italy, than ireland and portugal. not spain which has more like a financial problem related to its housing.
People can only go by the promises made. If (as is usually the case), they find that the politician has not delivered on those promises, then they can vote him/her out at the next election.
That is the beauty of democracy. Ofcourse, sometimes as in the UK at present, you vote for "the lesser of two evils" :o(
let's take greece's election tomorrow. the people like the candidate that is promissing them paradise, but has no means to achieve it! he want to pay pensions his predecessor cut, increase spending to reduce jobless, but there is no money, in fact greece has debts and must pay them, and he wants to stop paying the debt.
so who will lend him money that he may not pay in the future?
You are ofcourse right. This happens in a true democracy. However, many a time you elect someone and then they forget about the people and focus on their own agendas.
yesterday there was election in Indian state, the result was "sentiments of the people". so it is again established beyond doubt, sentiments of the people is most powerful in polities.
sociopolitics is a deep intricate subject. u can't just define it in two lines. too many parameters. just give us a country so we can have an idea of its status, history, and capacities, so we can discuss accordingly.

Brit, yes, but I believe it is the same to an extent in the West too...not as obvious, of course.
You are ofcourse correct. This is true in developed democracies where they have checks and balances (to a certain extent)..
However, in developing nations , it takes time to put these in place and weed out the dirty politicians.

I think Obama's actions of the last few days are a good guide to way ALL politicians think..
He has now come out and said that he supports same sex marriage and also talked about giving residency to a certain group if illegal immigrants. :O)

If you look back at the past few days, he has already begun to change his tune. He is now mentioning words like "negotiation"..
So, as a politician, his first goal is to get elected :O)
