Electronic gates soon at souq parking lot
The parking lot in the Souq Waqif area will very soon be equipped with four electronically operated gates to regulate the parking of vehicles, says a report published in the local Arabic daily Arrayah.
Quoting souq’s manager, Mohamed Salem, the report says that work for installing the electronic gates has already begun and will be put into operation very soon. Motorists will be charged a nominal sum for this facility.
“We hope that these gates will help in controlling the rush of vehicles in the parking lot especially on weekends. There will also be designated areas for disabled persons to park their vehicles. We did not go with the idea of putting up a multi-storey parking lot because it will not be in tune with the characteristic image of Souq Waqif as an oriental promenade,” said Salem.
Plans are also underway to organise periodical recreational events and shopping festivals, he added.

I wonder if there's a designated parking for KIAs ?
well you can expect a drop in business there.
Planning ahead is an art!
nicaq - I'd assumed they meant the existing parking lot at the back of the souq by the mosque. But where ever it is, they'll still end up with traffic queued on the roads.
someone has to do some 'joined up thinking' about the infrastructure here
This is picture is obviously NOT me, I don't smoke..
allocate this gated parking area? If it will be on the place where the HSBC once stood before, then I think that's a good idea.
I think its the most ridiculars idea I have heard. Why would you want to stop the flood of cars to the souq, when people are spending money there? Its hard enough to get parking!
Whatever you vividly imagine, Ardently desire, Sincerely believe and Enthusiastically act upon, Must inevitably come to pass.
It's not a good idea if it means all the cars will be queueing up on the roads surrounding the souq. It will make traffic in that area even more of a nightmare than it already is. Just look at the chaos caused by cars queueing on the road to get into City Center.
very good idea.
whether there are restaurants or shops not in tune with their concept, still the business gives them revenue.
Sounds good at first look but surely this means that rather than having lots of cars flooding in to the car park, instead they'll all be queued up at the gates clogging up all the surrounding roads.
And this bit made me laugh - "We did not go with the idea of putting up a multi-storey parking lot because it will not be in tune with the characteristic image of Souq Waqif as an oriental promenade" - when you consider that this means they think that Hagen Daaz and all the other chain cafes ARE in tune with the image of Souq Waqif. What a joke.
