Enjoy it or bear it???

Who actually enjoys living here??

How many are only here in Qatar for the sole purpose to help make ends meet?

How many are here in Qatar to, of course, help make ends meet but also for a new experience of culture and life and actually choose to stay here with their being other options avaliable to you?

I am certainly the latter, even although I moan about some things like the drivers and Karwas here...I can happily and safely say I love living here :)

Sorry but you can't just make things up to give an answer Flor1212...it needs to have some truth.

Thank you.

Well the only one I have heard about in Dubai is the couple on the beach who where jailed.

Even if there had been more than one case...stop generalising the West please.

Thank you.

widen your horizon (or at least read more news). Are you updated of what's happening there?

I love how one couple out of the millions of tourist Dubai have, has managed to give you the opinion that; "tourist had their thinking that they can do whatever they want (even sex on the beach)".

So close minded its unreal.

I prefer Doha to Dubai as Doha still has much more of the Arabian culture and Middle Eastern beauty.

keep comparing Doha and Dubai when it is clear that they have distinct features.

Dubai's development was to entice "openness" so the west will come to it. So alcohol is "free-flowing", tourist had their thinking that they can do whatever they want (even sex on the beach).

In the course of their fast development, Dubai suffered a financial breakdown (check all those projects that were put on hold), thus the outflow of expatriates.

I hope Doha learned a lesson from their neighbors. Keep in between the "openness" of Dubai and "strictness" of Saudi Arabia.

Came to qatar only because theyre paying me 80% more of what i was getting in Dubai, plus way more benefits(house/car/two business class tickets back home each year). After an year of it, pretty much have to bear it with the best of my ability.

Doha is still years behind Dubai in terms of quality of life and the gap is only widening. Coming to Doha is like coming 20 years back in time lol.

So yeah, bearing it with a heavy heart but as soon as Ive saved enough, Ill be out of here the same day.

I enjoy living here, though there is always no place like home.

I like Qatar. We are all here for differing reasons. Most to Mae money. Others, who were born here and feel that they belong and a few "for the cultural experience". Never had any problems with driving or the people. The only minor issues have been the high rents and not enough sugar in the karak Chai...

By Missteacher• 26 Mar 2012 08:51

None of these affect me at all. Im happy to stay at my current job, bank account was sorted via my sponsor, don't want to buy any land, not married, and leaving country is never a problem...exit visa is ready within a day! :D

By anonymous• 26 Mar 2012 08:48

that's what i hate about this place.. no freedom at all, you cant enjoy life here, so my plan is save more money then 5 years from now is time to go home

thwho186...thts the trick unless the country is liberal in its policies thy will not be much consumption...look at Dubai ...people earn thr n spend thr which is good for the local economy....over here ppl earn n spend only on basics n rest is send abroad.... :-)

By anonymous• 26 Mar 2012 08:45

are you saying dubai is for modern yet younger age while qatar is for people who are old and boring? make sense to me,, but what i love about qatar is the salary.. in my one year of working I saved 30000 riyals, not bad specially if i convert that money with my country's currency.. In dubai you will be tempt to spend more

By anonymous• 26 Mar 2012 08:44

No restrictions? You CAN'T switch your job without NOC. You CAN'T open a current bank account without your sponsor's OK. You CAN'T buy a plot of land. A resident woman CAN'T marry without the sponsor's OK. You CAN't leave the country without an exit permit. And so on, and so on.

By Missteacher• 26 Mar 2012 08:37

Yeah it can't be that much fun for all the workers out here :( ....I don't know what people mean or when you say westerns wont accept for a long time the lack of certain liberties....I dont find any restrictions?? :S

Hi! Interesting topic, but a mature discussion would require to frame the age and nationality of the participants.

To my experience, people coming from the indian sub-continent, for example, will find Doha to be a paradise. Maybe it makes sense when comparing with there previous environment...

When talking with westerns, and again the age factor plays its role, most of them wont accept for very long the lack of certain liberties that they may be used to enjoying. In some way that why some people prefer Dubai...

And just as a reminder, this land belongs to the Qataris, all the rest are to be treated as visitors. Nothing more, nothing less. If/when the time comes that your sponsor has had enough, they will just put you on the next flight out, without any concern on what will happen to you or even if you have a family that depends on you...

At the end, there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on your expectations.

I do find DohaKnights comment as true since i ws also in Dubai....but thr is one difference Qatar's rent is too much...i know comparing to Abu Dhabi its really good....but u cannot compare Doha to AbuDhabi or Dubai as they r much bigger cities in MiddleEast...so when ppl comes from Dubai we feel like "laid back"....

By smoke• 26 Mar 2012 08:08

after living here all my life i dont think i'm here for the "cultural experience" Its all about the money money money :P

Apart from that there's no other place i'd rather be than here, its like my home away from home.

Yes Rizks now I can get mt swimmers out and get ready to hit the Beach and the pool once the weather warms up.

But I am also really enjoying this raining and overcast weather.

Back to the topic. I guess this is the second place I lived most after the UK and after 5 years could still live here and enjoy ..:)

What I would take from the 'laid back' comment is that everyone is so laid back about actually getting something done. I have a joke sometimes with my arabic friends and say ..yeah it will be fixed tomorrow....Insha'allah???

By nomerci• 25 Mar 2012 21:26

MT, oh yes, I do. Quite enjoy my lifestyle here. But I do not find it "laid back".

By Missteacher• 25 Mar 2012 21:22
Missteacher

Do you not like living here nomerci?

@flor - ive been here almost 2years....yeah I get homesick time to time but not often as I have skype, whatsapp and go home for holidays or family come here.

Made friends straight away with my job...some are no longer my 'friends' as we jumped out the 'new people' bubble and some are a few of my best!

By anonymous• 25 Mar 2012 21:08
anonymous

nomerci, True..but I was not talking about Doha in particular. Besides, I reflected on this Neil Diamond's song when I wrote something home about the place initially.

Now, please don't split hairs!!

By nomerci• 25 Mar 2012 20:59
nomerci

Naa, less lively maybe, but that does not mean laid back....anything that could be laid back about this place radically disappears once one hits the roads...or any shopping center in the evening.

Laid back, IMHO, is a sleepy little town, or a village at the beach, or a mountain retreat...but Doha? Lol, not in this life!

By anonymous• 25 Mar 2012 20:54
anonymous

nomerci, its relative...I have lived in Dubai for 6 years before I landed a job here..doesn't that explain why I found this place laid back?

By nomerci• 25 Mar 2012 20:51
nomerci

ok, please tell me this...how on earth is Qatar laiD back? And where do you find low rents here??? Please do tell!

By anonymous• 25 Mar 2012 20:38
anonymous

Reminds me of the song..

Qatar's fine, the sun shines most of the time

And the feeling is 'lay back'

Palm trees grow, and rents are low

But you know I keep thinkin' about

Making my way back

Qatar's fine but it ain't home..:)

first few weeks will be exciting because it's a new place and then homesickness will come in and you feel lonely. But it will be gone as soon as you buried yourself to work and finding new friends (in real and virtual).

Just imagine 20 years ago where only snail mail is available and calling back home is a "fortune".

The present time is the BEST time to go out and explore the world because there is no more far place nowadays, everywhere is reachable through and by the latest technology.
