Expert predicts spike in recruitment drives
One of the biggest challenges for Qatar, in its run-up to 2022, will be to acquire the right mix of expertise and industry professionals, leading engineering and manufacturing company, Descon Engineering CEO Salman Zakaria has said.
Speaking at a conference of MEED Qatar Projects 2011 last week, Zakaria said the problem might trigger intense recruitment campaigns among competing entities.
“We will need people in thousands … for equipment, for materials, resource management experts among others. The key point is to address this challenge before major projects are rolled out,” the official said, at the company’s stand at the two-day event.
Pakistan-based Descon is currently active in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar, primarily in the oil and gas sector.
“We are focused on oil and gas. Right now we are in the process of diversifying into chemicals, power, fertilisers, cement, steel, water treatment, infrastructure and alternative energy,” the official said.
Descon’s major clients in Qatar include Qatar Petroleum, RasGas, Qatar National Cement Company and Dolphin to name a few.
“Our workforce in Qatar currently stands at 3,600 with last year revenue from here reaching $250mn. We are looking forward to doubling that in coming years through substantial growth,” Zakaria said.
