Extremely adventurous or Extremely Stupid?
There is very thin line. And why on the earth should I make
such statement?
Yesterday someone had sent me a very disturbing video. A man
with his family and friends was on some Jungle Safari. On their way they had an
encounter with a lion family. This man suddenly jumped out of his car and went
a little ahead to take good shots. And the obvious happened…..one of the lions
jumped on him from behind and within less than 2 minutes that troop ate him in front
of his wife and 2 kids….So what do you call it? An adventurous?
That reminds me an incident happened to one of my nearest
and dearest mountaineer friend. This fellow has brought some very good quality mountaineering
instruments like ropes, carabiners, pitons, figure of 8’s, harnesses etc etc from Nepal. But despite of the good quality
these instruments still have a certain age. Everybody from our group told him
to discard away the worn-out ones especially the rope…as the rope is an
essential one for a climber….it should be always in a perfect condition…..But
this guy just ignored. He went on a climbing expedition with 3-4 amateurs so as
to give those climbing lessons. While he was climbing a pinnacle wall the rope
got stuck somewhere and no sooner did he given a little jerk to the rope then
the rope broke. My friend had a great 2500 ft fall in the dense jungle. Those
amateurs were so shocked; they literally went running nearly 35kms to the
nearest railway station and phone booth. The biggest search operation was
launched with the help of one famous cave explorer’s group next day. And they
found him and literally ‘collected’ him in a gunny bag. A sheer negligence had cost him his promising
life just at the age of 28. So, again
can you call him an adventurous?

thats horrible to hear, its certainly reckless. I feel sorry for the wife and kids who witnessed this....sorry to hear about your friend....
Something similar happened to me. We were on a trek and we spotted a bear carrying its cub on its back. A nutcase in our group started going near the bear and taking pictures with a flash. The bear kept the cub somewhere at a ditance and came back and chased us. Some of us got injured, but one guy almost got mauled. Thankfully no one died.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend but I think it was highly irresponsible of him to take faulty equipment and take 2 ametures along.
Its called calculated risk.The trick is in knowing when to draw the "lakshman rekha"(line of control)..
some of our regular professions are more risky than others.surgery is very risky for each patient but is a routine procedure for the performing surgeon.
sometimes overconfidence tends to push the line of control more into the danger zone which probably is what happened to your friend.you can never afford to compromise on certain essentialities (aka rope).
anyhow i am sorry for your loss.

Your mountainering post takes me right back to the time we used to do treks on the Shayadri ranges. The terms " ropes, carabiners, pitons, figure of 8’s, harnesses.........take me back to those days........all seem like part of my past life."
And many of the climbers have a falacy about the rope that it is tremendously strong. And they say "it has numerous strands and only one strand is enough to hang from....add the combined strenght of the
other strands then the rope becomes unbreakable"....
But in zero degrees it has the chance to becomes brittle!!!
And of the climber who climb a mountain rock face without rope, I say is he is dumb....no matter how expert he is.....
as the question is what are his chances of surviving from a mistake?
If he doesnt have a plan B then he is a bad climber. And whats his problem
of having a belay rope to protect him? His EGO?
stupid and irresponsible..... sorry to hear bout ur friend but he should have known better...

the man being mauled video is part of a collection of grindhouse ( and i use grindhouse very loosley here) movies from Italy called "Ultime Grida Dalla Savana" its pretty old (1975).
