FACEBOOK- The popular website that has stormed the net almost overnight and currently presents a virtual alternative to socializing, finding old friends and making new friends as well.
Is it just a modern way to express our exhibitionist nature and advertise our existance to the anonymous masses of human beings whom we would like to relate to? Or is it a sincerely new platform which will evolve the way the new generations of internet-age youth interact with one another?
Or is it just another one of Big Brother's means of gathering more personal information about our individual lives and archiving this in mass data banks that can be accessed by more sinister organizations that would otherwise have to break the law to get at the same information?
What are your views/fears about Facebook and other similiar websites that offer more human interaction in return for the privacy of our lives?

i don't like facebook much. it's too time consuming, and i eventually end up with hundreds of friends, some i havent spoken to in years. i dont like it when people i hardly know anymore comment on my pictures or wall as if we were hanging out last night.

my account is disabled now (:

another thing, i have a friend who does not supply correct information on facebook like his birthday because according to him, others might use his name and birthday to do illegal things, like in cases wherein stolen identities are used.

if you don't want embarassing photos to surface on the web, don't post it in the first place. simple... and check your friends' photos also and advise them not to post anything embarassing with you in the group.

You know, you can find out a lot more about people by googling their name than you ever will through facebook!

Did you Google it first?

There is no stopping it now, facebook has provided the masses with what they need to socialize without wasting any effort, money or even feelings, and it does save more time than it wastes (but only for those who socialize, not play games and add apps).

There were claims supported by some...soft evidence (if i may say so) that the whole thing is a CIA project or was bought by them CIA after the big FB bang.

I guess all we can do now is be careful what we post about ourselves, there is no harm in posting what anyone can know about u with the slightest effort, is there?

And ofcourse avoid adding apps as they are ALL useless.

An honest person will not have any troubles actually, as they tend to have less devastating secrets and they know well enough how to hide them.

So let's just see, no use worrying, it's too late now

I love Facebook - but am completely careful on who I add and I make sure that all my privacy settings are high! Only my friends can see my photo's and info. If you are going to leave your profile visible to all then accept that your information is out there. Don't join any networks and only add people that are your actual friends - that way you keep your privacy and really if you are using it to keep in touch then do you really need to add all the applications. I have no need to be part of a mob or be a vampire or some such waste of time! I have connected with long lost friends and travel buddies - and so great to be able to share part of your daily life with your friends.

Good point Blackberry. Who really takes the time to read the terms and conditions when it pops up just as you are trying to see something that a friend posted to you on a new application? I think such quick uninformed decisions have a boomerang effect that come back one day, whether it is from an employer or the secret service or whoever.

My point is that this is all fine and well given that we remain in a free and democratic system that respect certain individual rights. But the moment that changes (such as the advent of a New World Order that sees individual rights differently) I think many people will regret having voiced certain views or given information on FB that at the time seemed harmless. Think about the anti communist crusade in the States in the 50's or even the war on terror today.

I wonder how many people actually take the time to read the terms and conditions before they join any of these things..i know im guilty an di really was contemplating removing myself from the FB phenomenon but was hesitant because it keeps me in touch with my friends from back home..now the reason i wanted to get out was because a friend told me that not only do employers visit these sites before hiring, they also check out ur pics and post as well as photo comments to see what kind of person ur...and sorry for u if u have any pics that put u in a compromising situation...further more i understand that they have the right to use ur pixx in anyways they please..man its scary to think abt it..just be careful what u put out there..it can make or break

I think too many people are falling for the "keep in touch with friends" aspect. We used to do that via email, phone, etc. But to post part of your private life on the net and voluntarily offer such information for all to see is what's worrying.

That's why I am wondering if this has been really considered by all those using it before it becomes a household name (actually already has) before anyone really raises a flag and places some qulaifications on how that information is used. Remember when you click to use any application, you are asked for your consent to use your information. Is there anything in small printed text the the general public is missing?

Big Brother could only harvest the info you put into it. If you are not happy to give too many details you don't have to!
