family visit to Greece

My family is planning our first visit to Greece in June. We hope to rent a self-catering cottage or apartment. When I started looking at travel guides and on the web, I was overwhelmed with all the choices! Your suggestions about especially beautiful islands for a quiet family vacation are welcome.

Many thanks, javasia2

Hey Java!

Angel has plenty of right when talking about Agistri Island, the main reason being that it's within close distance from Athens (the capital city) and Piraeus (the main port) as well as the other small islands mentioned.

Being a Greek though, I spent last year's summer holidays at the island of Tinos, which is situated in the centre of the Aegean Sea, very near to the well known island of Mykonos. You can have very relaxing holidays in Tinos, it's quite ideal since you're planning for family vacations. Great sandy beaches, excellent food, lots of typical small churches everywhere and a small mountain complex on top where you'll find a traditional village with (truly) friendly old perople living there, they might buy you lunch! You'll be able to eat ''loukoumades'' there, a great Greek delicasy. Tinos is the only ''green'' island in that part of the Aegean.

Zakynthos is another beautiful island I would choose to have a family holiday to; it's in the Ionian Sea, west of continental Greece. The beaches are even better, golden sandy, crystal clear waters and all that! You may get yourself some (really) fresh fish there! It hasn't got the colour of the Aegean (you know the white and blue dry scenery) but this island can really offer a lot.

Now, You'll need to rent a car if you're going to either Tinos or Zakynthos. And I wouldn't go there in June - try early July, the waters will have just got warm for swimming and you want have the ''August Vacationers'' crowds all over you, if you know what I mean!

Whatever you choose, happy holidays! I'm sure you'll have a great time, Greece is a beautiful country!

Cheers

Well I think 'my island' is perfect for a quiet un-touristy family holiday. It is called AGISTRI... and is 55 minutes in a catamaran from Pireaus... or a slower journey via the Island of Aegina, by car ferry-(1 hour), then a tiny ferry to Agistri which takes 15 mins, or the water taxi which takes 10 mins. Great location for a day trip to any of the following islands - Hydra/Poros/Spetse/Athens/Aegina -sometime during your holidays.

Agistri is perfect for getting away from the tourist zone, but you want to stay in the Village of Milos. There are two main villages (three in total) on the whole island. The boat usually stops at Skala village first, and all tourists and day visitors (mainly greek) get off there. The rest of us, who know better, stay on the tiny ferryboat until it gets to the next village of Milos, where there are a few family run hotels, but on a much smaller scale. This is more 'personal' place to be and far more interesting. To walk to Skala village will only take 20 to 25 minutes depending on speed of your shoes! The island is a huge rock sticking out of the water, covered in Pine Trees. There are lots of walks around the island itself.

I suggest the Milos Hotel (with pool/restaurant/cooking facilities in some rooms) 60 seconds from the Port of Milos, or the Hotel Flisvos 30 seconds from the small beach of Milos, with a small park next to the hotel; they also have a house for rent. Both are run by very caring and highly recommended families.

We have a house on the island, which unfortunately for tax reasons we cannot rent out, but as we lived in Athens for ten years, we know pretty much a lot of places, and we certainly still think of this place as the paradisos of Greece!! Check it out on google for more info. If you want to know more, call me on 5206824
