A conversion won't necessary make you a true-religious person. You need a paradigm shift dude, urgently!

Like I said before a lot of people have actually forgotten what Ramadhan is all about. They forget it's a month of sacrifices and worship whenever and wherever possible, and not a month spent partying after the sun goes down!

Now a days, Muslims brothers are fasting under luxury and comforts. Like we Hindu, give some meager amount to beggar and we think we will go to heaven with such generosity, similarily just not eating in day time and relaxing whole day under luxury atmosphere is not fasting but pretend to be fasting.

I respect the Muslim man who fast whole day, have no AC comforts, work hard all the day and eat meagerly in night.

Fatima Didi is exception.

is absolutely true. They are far more trialed than any of us and the hardships they endure are nothing like many of us can imagine.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons why our Prophet said that paradise will be full of poor people. In fact though he was the ruler of Mecca,Prophet Muhammad lived and died a poor man, hardly eating more than two meals a day,and that too one of which was only dates and water, with even his armor mortgaged at the time of his death. Compare that to the luxuries most rulers today are accustomed to!

By anonymous• 22 Jul 2012 16:11

The reasons behind fasting are:

1 – Fasting is a means that makes us appreciate and give thanks for pleasures. For fasting means giving up eating, drinking and intercourse, which are among the greatest pleasures. By giving them up for a short time, we begin to appreciate their value. Because the blessings of Allaah are not recognized, but when you abstain from them, you begin to recognize them, so this motivates you to be grateful for them.

2 – Fasting is a means of giving up haraam things, because if a person can give up halaal things in order to please Allaah and for fear of His painful torment, then he will be more likely to refrain from haraam things. So fasting is a means of avoiding the things that Allaah has forbidden.

3 – Fasting enables us to control our desires, because when a person is full his desires grow, but if he is hungry then his desire becomes weak. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O young men! Whoever among you can afford to get married, let him do so, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and protecting one’s chastity. Whoever cannot do that, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.”

4 – Fasting makes us feel compassion and empathy towards the poor, because when the fasting person tastes the pain of hunger for a while, he remembers those who are in this situation all the time, so he will hasten to do acts of kindness to them and show compassion towards them. So fasting is a means of feeling empathy with the poor.

5 – Fasting humiliates and weakens the Shaytaan; it weakens the effects of his whispers (waswaas) on a person and reduces his sins. That is because the Shaytaan “flows through the son of Adam like blood” as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, but fasting narrows the passages through which the Shaytaan flows, so his influence grows less.

Undoubtedly blood is created from food and drink, so when a person eats and drinks, the passages through which the devils flow – which is the blood – become wide. But if a person fasts, the passages through which the devils flow become narrow, so hearts are motivated to do good deeds, and to give up evil deeds.

6 – The fasting person is training himself to remember that Allaah is always watching, so he gives up the things that he desires even though he is able to take them, because he knows that Allaah can see him.

7 – Fasting means developing an attitude of asceticism towards this world and its desires, and seeking that which is with Allaah.

8 – It makes the Muslim get used to doing a great deal of acts of worship, because the fasting person usually does more acts of worship and gets used to that.

Excellence of Fasting

There are many traditions relating to the virtues and merits which a man gets from God by fasting the month of Ramadhaan. In this month, the doors of mercy, forgiveness and kindness are specially opened and the doors of punishments are closed. Therefore, whosoever wishes to have these blessings will at once take up to fasting at the advent of this month. It is stated in the Hadith that Allah Ta'ala says:

"It is for Me and I shall certainly compensate it." The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam also stated, "The fragrance of the mouth of a fasting man is more pleasant to Allah than the smell of musk".

(Mishkaat)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiallahu anhu reported that the Apostle of Allah sallallahu alaihe wasallam said: "When Ramadhaan comes, the doors of heaven are opened. (In another narration: The doors of paradise are opened), and the doors of hell are shut up and the devils are put under chains. (And in another narration: The doors of mercy are opened)".

(Bukhari & Muslim)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiallahu anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihe wasallam said: "Whosoever fasts in Ramadhaan out of faith and hopeful of reward, all his past sins will be forgiven; and whosoever stands up (in prayer) in Ramadhaan out of faith and hopeful of reward, all his past sins will be forgiven and whosoever stands up (in prayer) at the Blessed Night out of faith and hopeful of reward, all his past sins will be forgiven.

(Bukhari & Muslim)

It is related on the authority of Sahl bin Sa'd radiallahu anhu that the Apostle of God said sallallahu alaihe wasallam said: "There is a special Gate of Paradise, which is known as Rayyan (and) only those who observe fasting will be allowed to enter through it on the Day of Resurrection. On that day, it will be called aloud, ‘Where are the bondsmen who used to fast for the sake of God and endure the pangs of hunger and thirst?' Such of the bondsmen will respond to the call and save them, no one will be permitted to enter by this gate. When they have entered paradise through this gate, it will be shut, (and), after it, no one will be able to enter by it."

(Mishkaat)

Commentary: Thirst is the most severe hardship one has to bear during a fast and the greatest sacrifice a man who is fasting makes is that he remains thirsty. Complete satisfaction from thirst should as such form the most prominent part of the reward on fasting. Hence, the distinguishing quality of the gate has been set apart for the entry of those who fast is satiety. Rayyan, literally, means satiation.

It is related on the authority of Abdullah bin ‘Amr radiallahu anhu that the Apostle of God sallallahu alaihe wasallam said: "The fast and the Quran will both plead on behalf of the bondsman (who will keep fast in the day and recite or listen attentively to the recital of the Quran in the night, standing in the presence of the Lord). The fast will say: ‘My lord! I had held him back from food, drink and sexual satisfaction. Accept my intercession for him today (and treat him with mercy and forgiveness)’. And the Quran will say: ‘I had held him back from taking rest and sleeping in the night. O God! Accept my intercession for him today (and treat him with mercy and forgiveness)’. The intercession of both, the fast and the Quran will be accepted for the bondsman and he will be treated

Fasting is also a means of preserving the food supply in the past. In the past when times were hard you needed your food to last the full year. This message is also forgotten as more food is wasted now that is actually consumed.

Appreciate your effort. But it will take some time for Non-muslims to understand about fasting. We can prove anything using QURAN or HADITH. The only way this can be done if a person have good knowledge about ISLAM.

TB: This is a common but interesting question which Non-Muslim may pose it to a Muslim.

The purpose of fasting is not to just get hungry and thirsty but it is to become pious.

The Quran states:

O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed to those before you in order that you may attain taqwa" (Chapter 2, Verse 183). From this verse, we deduce that.

Fasting is prescribed for believers.

Fasting has historically been an institution commonly practiced by various religious communities (for example, during Lent by Christians and on Yom Kippur by Jews).

Fasting is a means to attaining taqwa.

By fea_sad• 22 Jul 2012 12:26

Fasting is considered to be important to Muslims because the Islamic faith is built on five pillars: Shahadah (or the declaration of faith), Salat (prayer five times a day), Sawm (fasting), Zakat (paying alms to charity), and Hajj (the holy pilgrimage to Mekkah). Fasting, especially during Ramadan is considered to have great spiritual value, and it is believed that fasting will allow you to get closer to Allah by means of Taqwa. Muslims believe that fasting allows them to appreciate God and how much he does for them, as well as inducing empathy for those less fortunate. Fasting also helps create a feeling of Umma within the Islamic community as Muslims across the world know that their brothers and sisters are going through the same ordeal that they themselves are.

Not everybody has to fast. Children under the age of 13 (girls) or 14 (boys) are exempt, as are pregnant and breast-feeding women, the elderly and the sick. There are also many things that negate the fast if a person commits them. For example, eating, drinking, sexual activities, smoking, swearing and immoral behaviour all exempt the fast. If a person commits one of these offences, depending on the severity, they would either have to make up the day of fasting, or fast for 60 days after Ramadan ends.

And Peace be upon you too Mike..thank you again for all the kind words.

And just to add to my post: One thing even the most careful eaters among us must beware of in Ramadhan is the dreaded Viral gastroenteritis(stomach flu)that is actually very contagious. Unlike food poisoning, the symptoms of this hits you even as much as 24 hrs or more after your encounter with someone who had the bug or consuming contaminated food and drinks, and includes terrible cramping stomach pains, vomiting and purging, that only a visit to the hospital can cure.

Overeating following a day of fasting is no mean feat. All I can manage is three dates and water and I'm full enough!

But yes I get the gist of the article itself. People have truly forgotten what Ramadhan is all about. Ramadhan is the month the Holy Quran was revealed and it is the month the Prophet and His companions spent devoutly in worship specially at nights.

Sadly today many the world over concentrate on Ifthar and Suhour as though they are mini Eids and celebrate them throughout the night with hardly a pause for any prayer! One only needs to have a peek at what those adverts for "Ramadhan tents" have to offer. Allahu Must3aan!

Finally I think the best diet in the world for anytime of the year, specially in Ramadhan when all we need food for is to make us stronger for our worship and fasting, was established by Muhammed(Peace be upon him) ie : "It is sufficient for the son of Aadam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air"

Gets more like Christmas every year - we have the same over indulgence issues in the West and over indulgence and losing the spirit and sense of the holy month is what the report is about - we have THAT in the West as well - Christmas has in a lot of ways lost its direction and its message concering the birth of Christ - I think this is the point that the cleric is trying to get across at the end - he seems to be implying that some people are also losing direction.
