I interviewed and was offered an upper level position in Doha. They knew from the start that it would be a family contract and housing but now I'm being told that I cannot sponsor my husband! Is this a hard fast rule or can some companies wave it and let women sponsor their husbands?
A recent female coworker was hired and was able to sponsor her husband after they signed a document promising that her husband will not look for work while in Qatar. If your husband wants to work, he can enter Qatar on a visitors visa until he finds a job. Every two months he will have to leave Qatar to renew it though. He can keep doing this until he finds his own sponsored job.
Hello Zelda, a new law was issued last year (around September) that do not allow women working in the private sector to sponsor their husbands even if they have a salary higher than 15,000 QAR.
You can sponsor your husband if you are working in a governmental or semi-governmental company (e.g. Qatar Foundation).
I do empathize with your situation. I am a teacher here and endured a nightmarish few months in trying to sponsor my husband. Unfortunately we failed. We were just repeatedly told, that he should find a job and women can't sponsor.
However at that similar time frame, a friend at Hamad managed to get her husband sponsored so did a teacher at my school (American).
If you have children, go in with them..... I know its a long stressful experience. Once rejected they also give you an opportunity to plead your case infront of a panel. Maybe your luck will be better than mine? insha Allah
Providing Family status is not a rule even if the employer knows. I wonder why you are being told that you cannot sponsor your husband.
Woman can sponsor her husband as long as her employer authorizes and that immigration requirements are met. As you are being offered an upper level post, I don't think you'd have a problem.

Would it be possible for my husband to obtain a sponsor after arrival in Qatar on a visitor's visa?

or maybe your HR guy has taken an extra interest in you and now does not want you to get your guy out here for reasons best known to your HR guy
I hope it is not a pretext to not hire you or make you settle for less than what you would deserve.
