Friendship: A Need or A Want ?

Cornellian
By Cornellian

Most of my friends recently left the country, and that made me wonder...do we want friends? or do we need friends? Will a person without friends be as healthy and productive member in society as a person with friends? Psychologically, can we survive without friends? It's something interesting to think about...let's hear some feedback.

I am not close to anyone except my wife.

I am not really good around people unless it is in a work environment.

When I am in work I am either working intensivly or cracking jokes to make people laugh, very little in-between.

It dun't really matter.

The norm is having friends and some social life. Eventually it depends on the individual. Living without friends and family and any sort of social life is the exception and not the norm.

If the person can manage to talk to himself, loves himself, manage self-pleasure, laughs with himself and cries with himself then he/she is fine. Otherwise, friendship is a need and the individual should go out, socialize and react with the community.

are someone special you would like to spend time with, friends come and go, collect and select the best and dump the crap one. I have lots of best friend and other friends are not worth it so, I dumped them. Friendship is something important if you like each other. but if they don't know how to give and take! you should realized they are not real for you!

Just keep dancing baby!

Yes we're social animals, but maybe some people are better off without others and prefer solitude, I don't understand how they can live like that, but then again I don't understand alot of things.

Man is a social animal. Early man realized this that he cannot live without a companion or a friend. Besides they were more productive hunting in packs. In the same manner, we can be more productive and more informed through the experiences and ideas of others.

I agree with Gypsy that there are times we may need to be alone and do our own thing.

And as JoeKanuck says friends are there when we want an interest-free loan. :)

both...we need somebody to remind us as an existing individual...want, to accompany us during difficult or light moments..and you will be very lucky if you feel both (needing and wanting)towards a friend..and vice versa.. :P

...exceptions but if you notice, most people tend to be in clumps, even small ones. With 6 billion people on the planet, some folks are just going to want to get away from it all...

I agree. I have a cousin though that is a complete hermit, doesn't have any friends, doesn't associate with family, totally asexual, doesn't date or anything, and he seems completely happy. Human beings are weird creatures.

It's interesting how some people can live without other people. How can they live without people to talk to ? share laughs and tears with? Someone to comfort them? What's life worth if it's not shared? Personally, I can't imagine my life without friends, it would be too dull. Besides u need someone to annoy every once in a while hehe

I think it depends on the person. Some people don't want or need other people. Others need people more then most. I like having friends and I need them, but I also need my space and my alone time too.

...no man really is an island. We're social creatures. We have a need to associate with other people. That's why we developed the power of speech...and so we could ask for money...
