Gave up on Qtel's router recommendations
So i have given up on qtel's thomson router, it keeps on rebooting every now and then especially when i am downloading torrents, and this issue is reported by many people, not only in qatar but even in UK and other countries. I called qtel twice and they just replace a wire in the telephone books, i am sure they know there is an issue with the router itself but anyways can you guys recommend any good "modem routers" and if they have any issues what they are. I would prefer one with 802.11n.
I heard the Belkin N1 vision is a good one anyone has that modem router?
Fluffy where can i get this 3com router from since carrefour, jarir pcone only have either belkin, linksys or netgear. I haven't seen the 3com brand in any of the stores that i have visited.
back in 2005 when i first got adsl and was looking for a wireless router Qtel wanted to charge 800QR for the router. but my brother suggested to buy a 3com router which was only 300QR.
i've been using the same 3com router for the past 5 years with no problems.
ok so i have narrowed down my choices to either
-netgear dg834pn http://goo.gl/Kkai
-netgear dg834g http://goo.gl/yygc
-belkin enhanced wireless modem router n150 http://goo.gl/7uz7
-belkin adsl modem with high speed mode wireless-g router
http://goo.gl/GNlc
one advantage for belkin is the lifetime warranty.
any other recommendations? would like to buy one before the weekend.
uksv29 great advice thank you for sharing. But I was looking to spend circa QR 600 and just plug it in and switch it on. Oh and buy local.
Oh, I used the Belkin N1 as a simple access point and ignored the DSL port for a while before dumping it. It kept locking up and users were complaining of no service.
Just like all the other Belkin crap I've had the misfortune to use in the past, they look nice but they don't work well and the RF performance of their access points is abysmal (drop connections, go slow) when there is interference on nearby channels. Don't use Belkin unless you want a life of pain and frustration.

When you start downloading torrents the box has to track lots of connections and it appears to run out of memory then falls over in a heap.
One way of avoiding this is to reduce the number of connections per torrent (upload and download) and don't have too many active at the same time.
The solution I use is to set the router box into Bridging mode so it doesn't do anything too clever and use a real-computer to negotiate the pppoe connection with QTel. I've done this in several places over here and have never had a DSL router box fall over since configuring it like this and one of the systems has over 40 users hammering the link.
This does require some technical knowledge to setup (Linux+pppoe+squid+iptables+ddclient) but the results are impressive.
Or you could go and buy a router like a Cisco 2811 if you have well over QAR5000 to spend :)

any other recommendations linksys, belkin, netgear I am sure you guys have wireless routers at home.
Me too going through the same problem for last 5 months. QTel guys visited almost 5 times never fixed the problem. I exchanged the router with my friend which is also gave me the same problem, but when my fiend uses it he doesn't have any problems as i do. QTel guys changed my extension in the main box too, still i have the same issue.
akheats please report back here and let us know if the new router fixes the problem.
I am experiencing same Qtel problem. GOING TO BUY A NEW bELKIN
I am experiencing same Qtel problem. Come on Vodafone, pull your finger out and show Qtel how to do things properly.
3com is good
i dont know why call them qtel engineers, i know they are very helpful but they don't do their job properly. They should do some research on the routers first, a simple 15 minute search on google will show them the issues reported with the thomson routers, i believe its a firmware problem and its something to do with the router itself not with qtel's connection or some other reason they may give you.
@KralIbo but my problem is not only with torrent downloads, if i am streaming videos from my PC to my TV or laptop the same thing happens it reboots.
I used to have the Mozaic router from qtel and i never had any issues with that router even with torrents but now they don't have mozaic in my area.
me too facing the same prob with Qtel Thompson router. Qtel Engineer visited couple of times still the same. worst part is when me & my frrnds are on a skype call it hangs up boom.
I had a Netgear router and it was also rebooting while torrent download. The problem was the parallel downloads. The router was not able to handle a huge amount of parallel downloads/connections, which torrent do.
So the solution was to change (reduce) the download settings at the torrent client. Since then it works w/o any problem :)
You can google the settings for your client.
