And if India was making foreign institutional investors rich (while keeping large numbers of the local population poor) that is certainly nothing to be proud of. In fact it is basically what happy has been saying, correctly, all along - rich businessmen in India are the reason there is such poverty.

In that case, to say FII's made huge profits ONLY from India is not correct. And if they made whatever profits how does it change the status of India being poor, which it is due to the reasons I had mentioned.

I guess you meant FII's (Foreign Institutional Investors) in reference to share markets. Is it?

India is not 'so poor'. However, we are poor cos of members of political party(ies)/ business houses, govt. servants, most of whom have siphoned off the money to swiss banks which is roughly estimated to be enough to buy entire Australia, lock, stock and barrel, 7 times...:) And so no blame to Britishers. If all that money can be brought back (impossible though), India would be in the league of richest countries in the world...:) Until then we sure are a poor country and may remain so.

This thread is going to get up the noses of people who don't think their country is poor! (Unless they want to use it as an excuse to blame the British). Although the British were also in Singapore (rich) Malaysia (rich) Hong Kong (rich) etc. So that excuse doesn't really work.
