Google launches internet browser :-)

Google is launching an open source web browser to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

The browser is designed to be lightweight and fast, and to cope with the next generation of web applications that rely on graphics and multimedia.

Called Chrome, it will launch as a beta for Windows machines in 100 countries, with Mac and Linux versions to come.

"We realised... we needed to completely rethink the browser," said Google's Sundar Pichai in a blog post.

The new browser will help Google take advantage of developments it is pushing online in rich web applications that are challenging traditional desktop programs.

"It's certainly the biggest news in the browser space since Firefox started to dent Internet Explorer's lead and many people see this as a re-ignition of the browser wars" - Darren Waters

Google has a suite of web apps, such as Documents, Picasa and Maps which offer functionality that is beginning to replace offline software.

"What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build," Mr Pichai, VP Product Management, wrote.

The launch of a beta version of Chrome on Tuesday will be Google's latest assault on Microsoft's dominance of the PC business. The firm's Internet Explorer program dominates the browser landscape, with 80% of the market.

yes, i also had a few problems with java, it only seems to work with the newest java 6 update 10 (needless to say, a beta release!)... the inevitable glitches are further evidence that google is pushing the envelope big time with this browser

ok, it has a few bugs and so what? it's a beta version, it's got new code and ample margin for improvement..

the jury is still out on security and privacy but i think chrome delivered on the very important features where other products are so weak: it's simple, lightning fast and hardly crashes.. good job google!

Nops they can't..

FFx uses Gecko and Chrome uses WebKit (same as Safari, N-series browsers in Nokia, etc).

The architecture of Chrome is actually more similar to IE8 than FFx

Not to forget it is a beta release and bound to have many bugs and shortcomings. Google seems to keep their apps in Beta forever, Gmail which is still a beta after so many years is one good example.

I don't think Google planned to release it so early. The "comic" that was sent out to announce it was leaked accidentally, so Google rushed to put out the beta. So it's hardly surprising that there are some bugs, as it's only a beta.

have downloaded it.. lemme see how its gonna perform...

Yep, quite a lot of people seem worried by the Chrome privacy statements, specifically the one shiva highlighted and this one;

"Your copy of Google Chrome includes one or more unique application numbers. These numbers and information about your installation of the browser (e.g., version number, language) will be sent to Google when you first install and use it and when Google Chrome automatically checks for updates. If you choose to send usage statistics and crash reports to Google, the browser will send us this information along with a unique application number as well."

So they have the right to do whatever they want with the information you enter into the browser AND they can tie that information to you via the unique application number. Not sure if other browsers have quite this level of privacy invasion.

Doesn't it look like that they have copied many codes from firefox ?

The current version of Chrome has quite a few bugs:

Middle click on the mouse for scrolling doesnt work

Scrolling up a page using mouse gestures on the touchpad doesnt work.

Some Java plugins don't work, some sites do not function properly.

Although, for a 1st release, it looks very promising! It renders pages blazingly fast & has a small memory footprint. Google still has a lot of work to do on the browser, most importantly work on addons.

Now, here's the scary part. If you read the privacy statement in their EULA, they mention "By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services."

Now this is not specifically for their bots for ad-sense. They are literally saying they own whatever you do on their browser and can use that information (even private) for whatever purpose.

The scope of the browser looks bright, I love the minimalistic design and the browsing speed, just waiting for a release with a bug fix.

And now about IE, IE8b2 is my default browser as of now, I've used FFx, it's great without doubts. But I would definitely say IE is far from what people say about it. Especially with IE7 and now IE8, having the IE7Pro addon makes life much easier to work with the browser. My IE takes less memory than FFx3, and mind you Firefox 3 has crashed more number of times on my system than Internet Explorer has. I've run 4-5 instances of IE8 when I've needed to with several tabs in each instance, and left it running over night without any problems, CPU spikes or memory issues.

In the end, competition = Awesome for the end consumer (us). FFx forced IE to improve (over the pathetic IE6) and now Chrome will do the same to FFx and IE.

i'm using chrome and have already found a small flaw:

after installation it doesn't prompt the user for default language and automatically chooses arabic (at least on my computer)... i don't understand arabic so it took me a while to find out how to change into english..

apart from that, so far so good :)

I've been playing around on chrome since it launched yesterday, and I declare it to be lighter than the fox!. very light, very smooth, interesting homepage, security as well as the nice incognito mode!.. most features are found in IE7, firefox and safari but they've done an excellent job bunching them together :)

I wudnt yet prefer it over the fox. also it doesnt have all the plugins im used to, this i think will take some time to be available.

I'll be testing the beta and giving feedback... Looks promising.

Anything that's good could even be integrated in Firefox, since they're open source.

are forced to use IE7 as this is the only browser supported by our client's online document tracking system.

Opera all the way!!!

Let the Power be with Open source...

Google also has its own MSWord equivalent called Docs check it out:

Toady most of the Freeware are as good and some even better than the paid software eg:

Irfanview = ACDsee

The Gimp = Photoshop

Inkscape = CorelDraw / Illustrator

Blender = 3Ds Max

Audacity = Soundforge

YawCam = Paid webcam software

Thunderbird = Outlook....etc

Does anyone still use IE? I don't even think it should be labeled as a competitor, it sucks so bad and keeps crashing compared to firefox.
