Got those, it's summer in Doha, blues

Gypsy
By Gypsy

Ok, I don't want anyone to think I don't like Qatar. For 8 months of the year (ok, maybe 8 and a half) I love living in Qatar. However, it's almost June and from now until the end of the September Qatar is the bane of my exisistence. I hate summer in Qatar, and unlike most lucky people I DON'T GET TO LEAVE!

Reasons I hate summer in Qatar:

1) 47 degrees in the shade is not a temperature meant to be experienced by normal human beings..in fact I'm fairly certain Satan keeps the fourth circle of hell a balmy 47 degrees!

2) I forget that the sky is actually meant to be blue and not yellow.

3) my Qatari I.D. melted to the dash board of my car. (I'm serious).

4) If my foot accidently touches the fire extingusiher in my car I get second degree burns.

5) I need to carry a winter jacket around in case I go in the mall.

6) I have constant pneumonia from going from one temperature extreme to the other. Look I know it's hot out, but you dont' need to combat that by putting the air conditioners at -47 degrees! 25 degrees would be lovely.

7) The swimming pool is too hot to swim in

8) Any fish you get from the ocean are already half cooked

9) It takes 45 minutes with the air conditioning on full blast to actually be able to breath in my car, and by then I look like I just took a bath with my clothes on (so sexy :P)

10) If you leave a bottle of water in your car, better leave a tea bag in it to...oh and blow on it a little before you drink it, you don't want to burn yourself.

UGH :(

April 30th:

Just got transferred to work and live in beautiful Dubai, UAE! WOW!!! Now this is a city that knows how to live!!!

Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. It's like New York City minus all the crocks, murderers, and drunks.

What a place! I watched the sunset from a deck chair on my beautiful bedroom veranda. It was beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

May 13th:

Really heating up. Got to 95 degrees today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car, and everything is fully air-conditioned. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.

May 30th:

Had the backyard landscaped with tropical plants today around our lovely pool. Lots of palms and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me.

Another scorcher today, but I love it here. Heat is no problem at all.

June 10th:

The temperature hasn't been below 95 all week even during the night.

How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least today it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:

Fell asleep by the pool. Got 3rd degree burns over 90% of my body. Missed 5 days of work.

What a dumb thing to do in this lovely city. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this..

July 20th:

Kitty (our cat) sneaked into the car when I left for the office. By the time I got to the hot car for my lunch break, Kitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $60,000 Audi. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Wisketts and cat shit. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.

July 25th:

The wind sucks. It feels like a giant F***ing hair dryer in here!!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner died. The F***ing AC repairman charged 500 Dirhams just to drive over and tell me it was broken in Hindu English or some F***ing language that I couldn't understand.

July 30th:

The Air conditioner still broken .I've been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now because it is 7000 F***ing degrees inside.

Bloody 2,000,000 Dirhams house and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here? F*** the sun. F*** the wind. F*** the freakin' ocean. And locals walking around dressed in F***ing white tablecloths followed by little black female ninjas. F***ing crazy town.

August 4th:

It's 114 F***ing degrees today. Finally got the ol' air-conditioner fixed. It cost 2,000 F***king Dirhams and got the temperature down to 25, but the F***king Humidity makes the house feel 30 F***king Dubai degrees, stupid terrorist Repairman. I hate this stupid place.

August 8th:

If another local wise ass cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to F***ing whack him all the way back to his goddamn desert. F***ing Dubai; by the time I get to work with all that F***ing traffic and heat, the car's radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like a baked cat!!!

August 9th:

I tried to run some errands today, because it is F***ing Friday. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in my Audi. The seat was so F***ing hot I thought my ass was on fire. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and my F***ing ass. Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and a baked cat.

August 10th:

The weather report might as well be a F***ing recording. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. Hot, humid and F***ing sunny. It's been too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman dude wearing the F***king white tablecloth on TV says it might really warm up next week. Does it ever rain in this damn F***ing place? What is next? A F***ing hell freezing over wave?

August 14th:

WELCOME TO HELL!!! Temperature got to 120 today. Now the air-conditioner's gone in my F***ing Audi. The F***ing Audi serviceman said, 'Hot enough for you today?' F*** him and F*** Audi. My wife had to spend the 7,000 Dirham to bail my ass out of jail for assaulting that stupid F***ing bastard wiseass. F*** Dubai! What kind of a sick demented F***ing idiot would want to live in

this s**t hole?

August 15th: (Independence Day?)

F*** this place. I'm off back to New York

I thought licking an ice cream cone in hot weather was heavenly. Don't see much of that here.

The other day, had a whole bunch of pple stared at me and kids enjoying our Qr1 McDonalds ice cream cones, going down the City Centre travelator. Can't figure it out.

Maybe we need more ice-based desserts, like in south east asian countries (I missed the iced sugarcane drinks with lemon, ice kachangs, chendol, bobochacha, iced longan drinks, etc).

but not the heat. Cant have it all. Stop cringing and get back to work. At least you all have AC cars, offices homes and what other luxuries. Spare a thought for the poor underpaid workers who toil in the sun to get you those roads and villas you live in. You do not hear them grumbling or moaning like little kids.

I've only been here five weeks and I have to say after being in Canadian spring (maximum 15 degrees during the day time) and then coming into this heat, I find it absolutely oppressive and I don't know if it's just me, but it also makes me sort of dizzy. Trying to drink water but haven't been able to eat since I came here.I can barely manage juice and toast most days. I don't know what's worse, getting used to the driving or getting used to the heat:)

You were lucky the words didn't shatter before you could fry them.

Britexpat--We used to make "sun tea" all the time during the summer when I was a kid. Put a few fresh mint leaves in while it "brews" then mix a little sugar before it chills in the fridge and you have an excellent drink.

I had a first hard year as well, but then I got used to being one of the few working-through-the-summer ppl here and started to see the good sides - no shopping queues, no traffic jams, free seats in the bars...

look at the bright side of summer....

1) you save electiricty by not turning the heater on...

2) sweating is a detoxation of the body, and it also helps you shed some weight, so by the time summer ends, we will all be vogue cover models....

3) you get to play the great game of spot that smell, with the malls and the office environment being invaded by the fresh scent of arm pits, a$$ and feet...

4) the romans were applauded for their sona technology, in qatar its available everywhere and for free....take that 1000 dollars per day spas...

5) you can sit in the car, turn the ac on just right, and get to watch the gulfs favorite pass time...watch the poor worker suffer a heat stroke

6) and finally everyone in management is on vacation so its time to PAARTYYYY :D

Sounds like a plan Doha Steve. We can't be expected to live in this! I think everyone should have the whole summer months off, nothing gets done in the summer here anyway!

It's about time the government did something for expats.

Therefore, my proposal is that private and public companies be instructed by Emiri decree to allow all expats to take the months June to September off, which is not included as part of their annual vacation.

Those that wish to travel are to be given a government grant to travel business class, with additional spending money provided.
