Halal supermarket in France told to sell pork and alcohol or face closure

A halal supermarket in France has been ordered to start selling pork and alcohol or face being shut down.

Good Price discount store in north-west Paris has been accused of breaching the conditions of its lease by not acting as a general food store, the local housing authority has claimed.

It argues that the local community in Colombes are not being served properly at the shop if no pork or alcohol products are sold there.

The mayor of Colombes, Nicole Goueta, has personally visited the store and asked the owner to start selling non-halal meat and alcohol.

But the manager of the shop, Soulemane Yalcin, has argued that they cater to the demands of local customers.

The authority claim the shop is prioritising a certain group within society which breaches republican principles

The mayor’s chief of staff, Jerome Besnard, told The Telegraph: ‘We want a social mix. We don’t want any area that is only Muslim or any area where there are no Muslims.’

Legal action is now being taken to end the shop’s lease, which will run out in 2019.

So, is the local authority correct in its judgement ?

Brity,

Thank you for the post and I have the following to say to the original writer.

This post is like a trailer of a film. There are many write up even in my own country local newspapers and online in the same fashion.

My personal opinion is, when there is such a write up, it should be completed.

In the sense, in relevant to this issue, The writer should have given a full interview of the person concern (Soulemane Yalcin) and if possible from the authorities point of view as well. (Take one full page or couple of page in the newspaper. Write in full)

Closing down a “Halal Restaurant” will reflect in generally as, A person who does a genuine business being closed. (Halal is a wide term and not relevant only to selling Pork/Alcohol)

The writer may have written, A shop to be banned not selling Pork, Alcohol etc., If I am the person to write the article, I would say that (A shop to be banned not selling Pork, Alcohol etc., (which can be harmful to the human health as per the scientific reasons)

My writing is not to protect any religion, region, community or a side. It’s just a thought of a layman.

If , as the lease suggest , there is a requirement to provide services / food for all - then I would support the local authorities

If it is so, then authorities are within their rights to initiate a legal action against the proprietor of store.
