An 83-year old man in Taiwan has admitted murdering his wife with a screwdriver in what he claims was a "mercy killing" in the light of her Parkinson's disease.

Wang Ching-hsi, a retired engineer, killed his wife Sun Yuan-ping, 80, who suffered from Parkinson's' disease, at their Taipei home Sunday.

Wang gave her sleeping pills then used a hammer to knock the screwdriver in her skull. Wang then turned himself in to police, claiming he performed euthanasia to end her suffering.

Wang said his two sons emigrated to the US, and he has been caring for his wife who had a broken leg in addition to Parkinson's disease.

Not wanting to face old age and illness, they discussed committing suicide a decade ago, and he mentioned it several times in his blog.

"We have lived enough. We discussed it a decade ago. If she died before me, it would be her good luck. If necessary, I would punch a hole in her head with an electric saw," he wrote Dec 1.

Wang has been charged with murder and prosecutors plan to perform a post-mortem to determine the cause of Sun Yuan-ping's death.

Euthanasia is still illegal in Taiwan, but the island in June passed draft regulations allowing family members to suspend medical efforts that prolong suffering without preventing eventual death.

I think its a romantic thing. If he died first who would take care of old Sun Yuan-ping? she would've suffered much more. :)

He is an Engineer by profession. All his kids migrated to US. That shows his finacial status is high. So why can't he post a nurse to take care of them both?? Can't he go to the hospital?? Or even, he could have been planned a decent retirement life with his better half..! But its cruel... his mind is freezed. He should not be killed or hung. Let him live as it is...

So many elderly folk are now facing this problem. Trapped and unable to care for their partner.

I feel sorry and sad for the situation he found himself in.

Must have been terrible to see his wife in such a state. However, not a very merciful way to kill somebody. I find mercy killings difficult to comprehend and justify to myself. Unless there is written proof (i.e. a living will), you only have the killers word.

I don't think anybody has the right to take another person’s life. Yet and thank god I have not; I have never been in a position where I am watching somebody I love very much suffering with a chronic terminal illness.

A very sad situation for all concerned.

sometimes ends up in insane moves or actions. It's really hard to imagine 'til you are on the same exact situation! Let the old man be assess as to what he did and let justice be applied correspondingly!

its happened with a 80-83 old aged couple. just imagine, the age and murder in the name of mercy killing!!! But can't point out the grandfather is clear. They have already decided or talked about it to endin up together. But the way he selected is too cruel. Then why didnt he committed suicide?? He may be a sadist..!

why he knocked a screwdriver into her skull after giving her sleeping pills is beyond comprehension.. he should be punished as he did to his wife, this time, minus the sleeping pills..
