help finding arab friends
Hi QL!
My wife and I recently moved to Doha at the end of September, immediately after we married. We both are interested in getting to know more about the local Arab culture, but have also read here (and others have told us) that much of the local Qatari population isn't very keen on making friends with expatriates. I don't know if that's true or not, because I work at a university where no Qatari people are currently employed, and I haven't had much of a chance to investigate it for myself. My wife hasn't found a job yet, so she hasn't had much contact either.
We are both from Chicago (I guess my screen name sort of gives that away), she's 25 and I'm 27. I'm a network engineer and she's an urban planner (looking for work). We love to BBQ, go to restaurants, listen to live music, talk until we've gotten sore throats, play outside, and travel. We both couldn't be happier about what happened yesterday in America...
... And... We're both a bit desperate to meet some folks, practice Arabic (I'm 'intermediate' at best, she's an absolute beginner) and otherwise just make some friends outside of our social circle. Do you speak Arabic? Are you interested in hanging out, having a meal and/or a shisha, teaching lame folks how to speak better etc? Let's meet up! Dinner is on us.
Oh, and by the way, we're interested in hanging out with other expatriates, too-- but that is a *little* easier to do for us.

Hi chicago man .. I am a Filipino that recently moved to Qatar for a new career and life in the arab world .. I spent 5 yrs in Saudi Arabia and had a few circle of good arab friends there. Without discrimination against the Saudis I find it a lot easier to mingle with Qatari folks here although I have not befriend even a single one (just arrived 20 days ago) .. Saudi is a conservative country and befriending their locals is often met with troubles while Qatar is an open country that takes care of expatriates so much I don’t find it hard for the two of you to meet them here .. the easiest way is to meet some arabs (not necessarily qataris) and kindly ask them to introduce the two of you to their friends .. and you start from there (in the flesh!) .. good luck and mind you there are kind hearted arabs out there if you meet them lucky for you coz it brings joy to mingle with them as I know it by experience .. good luck
Let us go for BBQ ...........
