Arrested for reporting on Qatar's World Cup labourers

We were invited to Qatar by the prime minister's office to see new flagship accommodation for low-paid migrant workers - but while gathering additional material for our report, we ended up being thrown into prison for doing our jobs.

From the Guardian UK..

" The Qatari government’s head of communications, Saif al-Thani, said the BBC crew were arrested after departing from an official tour. He said: “We gave the reporters free rein to interview whomever they chose and to roam unaccompanied in the labour villages.

“Perhaps anticipating that the government would not provide this sort of access, the BBC crew decided to do their own site visits and interviews in the days leading up to the planned tour. In doing so, they trespassed on private property, which is against the law in Qatar just as it is in most countries. Security forces were called and the BBC crew was detained.”

He said other media outlets were able to report freely from the same camp the following day."

MM: You last comment was really a good one. However, you have forgotten that QL is also used by a very few to insult others in the worst possible way, overriding all rules and morals and ethics of writing. When this happened to me some days back, as lone warrior I defended my castle well against the barrage from the western guns. Finally, they raised the White Flag and you stepped in to apply ointment to the wounds!

Lol , So the persom who earns 100 times than a construction worker would come to their rescue ........... if only he is free from the politicians , cinema ACTORS , music INDUSTRIALISTS , whisky / cigar makers , sports STARS , .......... ROFL .............. Interestingly media covers wealthy for 364 days & poor for one day in a year ............ Okay let them tell us from whom they earn 99 % of their revenue ? ......... Let the construction worker know these facts to find out who is hand in glove with the riches { politicians & business gangs } ...........

So BBC can definitely do something about the low paid labourers in their own town first ........ then support their own cousins in the Gulf as a priority then begin to help construction side ............. they must have a road map to improve the situation ........... let us give them 50 years ............ what's the hurry .......

The BBC discloses salaries of Managers only. They earn 150,000 British Pounds (QR 859,000.42) or more annually. There are no numbers available for reporters.

WT: How long have you been a BBC reporter ?

Anyway, some valid points. Change is hard to accept, especially the opening up to a neutral media.

The workers' conditions seem to be improving a little however the issue of forced labour and unscrupolous agents needs to be addressed.

Glad you got out safely.
