Honour killing

By drmana

A Jordanian man confessed to killing his 16-year-old niece to save his family's "honour" after she was sexually assaulted, a judicial official said on Saturday.

http://gulfnews.com/news/region/jordan/jordanian-shoots-dead-sex-victim-...

What bothers me is:(Article says)
Murder is punishable by death in Jordan but in so-called "honour killings" courts can commute or reduce sentences, particularly if the victim's family asks for leniency.

Can anyone explain why? I would say sentence should be increased in "Honour Killings".

We can't do anything but those who can don't want to do anything. How sad is that? :-S

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2010 13:02

These murders are committed to protect the family honour so called honour killing.

It's better to have a dead daughter than a 16 year old pregnant daughter or it's better to have a dead son than one who ran away with a girl from lower caste. For different reasons, to protect the family honour these killings happen.

It is completely illogical and stupid but well stupidity isn't extinct yet.

drmana, i was just joking..

There is NOTHING honorable in such evil acts! The man or rather the beast deserves the death penalty...Its sick really. May Allah grant the dead his mercy in abundance & the murderer what he deserves! News like this always has me disturbed regardless of how many times its been done around the globe. So so sad!

drmana when emotions run high, we don't think. Atleast my community doesn't, as you can see from my stupid senseless angry comments on QL everytime I get on an emotional high horse ;)

By drmana• 25 Jul 2010 12:36

It may take time to change, but if tried..it can be changed. Maybe by taking help if this panchayat itself. This "honour killing" thing has no honour in it. When would people understand that? And since the law doesn't help as well, this will never stop :-(

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2010 12:34

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2010 12:31

drmana the ones enforcing the law in India in certain states do believe in honour killings as well or they are too scared to interfere in the workings of Khap panchayats. It will take time to change.

drmana, we are hoping for a LAW/BILL(in INDIA) to get pass soon to stop such heinous crime of our society..Those who have got caught so far are still behind prison and due to the lethargic work of our judiciary system, culprits still roam freely...

soniya, I know it happens everywhere. People even take pride in such things but how can law do that? Its a serious issue. If law also make it look like any less than murder, then how can this be stopped?
