How far do you go to save money

Most of us try to be frugal in some way. How far would you go though...

One lady says, 'I don’t believe in spending money on something that you’re just going to throw away such as toilet paper or paper towels.'

She also informs viewers that she hasn't done laundry for the past three years and instead washes her clothes by hand while she takes a shower.

She then hangs items up in the bathroom and lets them dry naturally.

One guy, Like Rizks uses his bicycle as his primary means of transportation and claims he’s saved over $50,000.

Mother-of-five Vickie , refuses to shell out cash for a telephone, a television or even new clothes for the children. And for meal time she scours the local area for road kill.

While Greg only flushes his toilet once per week and reuses free plastic cutlery despite making a good living

Most people cannot EVEN THINK of another avenue to earn money other than their job... (although it is illegal in Qatar) there are many who do...

some work part time... some provide services... some start small part time business, some pool money to start a shop, some pool money to start a restaurant etc...

It is very difficult for one to jump from working class rank to a business class rank... the Business class will not allow anybody to enter their arena so easily... for them you are a rival , they will only be glad to see one exit...

True...FS...

the layman who are Working class people are bound by salary thinks "saving" from their earning.

the Business/Industrialist class people are bound only by imagination, they commit their whole life in earning more and in bigger and broader ways than they presently earn. If they have a successful business the enter new business avenue and try to make profit there. They exist 1 in 10,000. They are the Big Fish.

One can always earn more than one can ever save...

Small fish try to save more...

Big fish try to earn more...

but many will never understand this

I don't waste but I do not even try to be frugal. Once a bit of income is saved away for my old age, anything left after expenses is donated to charities as I consider it "what I can spare". It's a practice which has been passed down through the generations in my family and which I am trying to pass down to the next generation in my family.

PF, strange but how does stealing a paperweight give that person validation?

By PrarieFire• 2 Oct 2012 09:35
PrarieFire

I think you'll find that its more a kind of self validation they seek from having saved that riyal here or there.Doesn't seem to make sense to the average person.Remember hearing this story not sure if its true or not of an executive stealing someone's paperweight.I think its a similar phenomena it isn't about the paperweight its about the self validation it gives him.

there are several ways to save....

I know a millionaire, who used to get the thrown away furniture for home and stay in a worst maintained portion of a shared villa.

I wash my clothes by hand too ... no washing machine anyway. I used to get a lot of hand-me-downs from Mum's friends and other relatives. I wear the same outfits every week, my colleagues think I only have 5 outfits which I wash and wear ... and they are more or less right.

Not very frugal on food though ... hence my lifestyle issues currently affecting my health... time to cut down on those asap ... while trying to reverse my lifetime of bad habits, I guess, I'll be loaded by the time I kick the bucket. :0)

CL you like it when i play hard to get...and when you get it..its hard to swallow is it not? It leaves you satisfied and coming back for more :P

i personally have this self inflicted scene of not being able to save even though i'd love to..and if i wasn't a smoker and car guy, i'd actually have some hope..have cut down a lot on the smoking but that's more to preserve my health than save..and yeah if that lady Vickie is feeding her kids road kill, well is she clothing them in road kill fur too?..that's the heights:-)

As Warren Buffet says… Spent only what’s left after saving and not save what’s left after spending!

For the first time after many years I wrote monthly expenses (excluding rent and utility bills) for last month...and the figure was shocking for a family of three plus maid...never realized that we spent that much...It was much more than what I normally advice newcomers about monthly expense..:(

Except for car, food, clothes, personal hygiene, personal care, drinks, ciggies & at times a bit of charity...I generally don't spend unnecessarily...:)

Savings are generally based on ONES attitude towards the living life style. One could not save from cutting the basics of life like hygiene, food, etc.

The recent recessionary trend and unsure global economy played a bigger role in the mind of people to protect the future by saving more, without realising that economy would be in more trouble if we save more money during such period.

Personally, I dont spend on luxuries and opt for reasonable cost options such as prefer to fill up Super than Gold petrol for my car.

OMG how disgusting. Makes me wonder how much money i would have saved by now :P

I'm just thinking about all the expenses i can cut out to save money here lets see now:

Ciggies: Qr. 9 x 30 days = 270

Pool: about 500 to 700 a month approx

petrol: in a week about 100 bucks so thats 400 a month

eating out about 300 to 600 depending

thats almost 2 grand right there...not to mention other little little stuff. sheesh!

I gotta say this out about the actions of Vickie and Greg YUUUUUUUUK!!!

Ok...now where were we...yes...I too do take steps at frugality, ex: keeping the ACs switched off for a few hours of the day even in summer(though I do this when I am alone at home cos it really makes my hubby mad), avoiding going to Mega Mart more than once a week, stocking up on good offers that save both time and money, washing certain clothes by hand whenever possible, doing the laundry during off peak hours, etc. I also avoid buying clothes in Qatar and instead get my friends or relatives to buy stuff for me when they go to Sri Lanka cos not only are the clothes sold there cheaper and of better quality, but many known branded clothes are actually made in Sri Lanka though sold for much much more elsewhere. Frugality is good so long as it doesn't border more on stinginess and greed!
