Everybody is right Everybody is wrong, it depend where we stand.
Strong Passwords and reasonable password change frequency will definitely help. How ever to prevent hackers from intruding to your boxes, use firewall... there are many available in the market... Always remember not to send passwords, account information, credit card numbers through the email or SMS.
Now a days we have Phising Scam, always look for a encyrption (Will Look like a Lock) on the right hand corner of the screen. Remember no banks or agencies will ask you to enter your account information... Hope this helps.
sounds like excellent job. wink

Nah just another system admin sitting in a boaring (off-beat) noisy server room having a coffee and chatting with my wife on the phone and net whole day hehehehe

You don't need to find out unless you are a system administrator where you can read log files (/var/log/mail.log) if you are a user on any mails you have to protect only your self. And here some simple tips;
1. Create an e-mail to a reliable domains or if you own one that's better. Try creating from gmail.com that is one of the best these days. I really don't recommend Yahoo or especially Hotmail, don't ask why.
2. Make your password bit longer at least 6 alpha-numeric, alph-numeric means mix A to Z and 1 to 9 including special characters like !@#$%^&*
ie: myp@22w0rd (ok that is 10 but that is safe enough)
3. You must use GPG
More about GPG:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Privacy_Guard
http://gnupg.org/
GPG will help you to secure you, your self and your opponent you want to send your mails, GPG is a tool to create encrypted e-mails and other documents.
Good practice will start from you then to your family circle and later to your circle of friends.
These days bad guys (so called hackers but hackers is not a right definition, they are called black-hats) go directly to your mailbox and view your mail but if you have GPG they cannot view it if the mails are encrypted, they really don't care about your password anymore they can infiltrate directly. Doing a password cracking or guessing is a typical script-kiddies group of hackers, script kiddies are people who pretend they are good but they are not!
Ok if you ask my own opinion now I do use the following;
1. My Own hosting km33.com and as well gmail.com
2. I use longer alpha-numeric passwords
3. I do use GPG and especially encrypt sensitive mails around me.
-- Application I use (Note: I don't use windows, so sorry for windows user, but there are a lot of windows crack version software around hehehe)
- I use Linux Ubuntu 'Gutys Gibbon'
- Seahorse 'encryption key manager' for keeping GPG keys and keyrings
- Evolution for my mail client and I fetch gmail.com and km33.com over that application in TLS Encryption mode for receiving and sending message
Hope this will help you.
Whats the use of tracing a hackers IP address.
First of all they will have tools to hide their IP or they might hack from another hijacked computer.
gone are the days where hackers use their own computers for this stuff.
YOU DONT KNOW ME, DONT EVEN TRY !!!

A Greek ex-gf of mine (a Mensa queen with a high IQ) had hacked my e-mail account and was not impressed at all with my flirtatious e-mail to another girl!
I found out the hard way that my e-mails had been hacked and read...
