How was Neeraj Grover Killed?
Neeraj Grover
The city is yet to come to terms with the brutal murder of Neeraj Grover, who went missing on May 6 2008. The arrest of Kannada film actress Maria Monica Susayraj and her navy lieutenant boyfriend laid bare the horror the 27-year-old creative head of Synergy Adlabs went through in his last moments. DNA reconstructs the shocking tale of betrayal, jealousy, and murder that has shocked Mumbai.
She wanted to be a star
Maria Monica Susayraj
After a brief stint in Kannada movies, Susayraj moved to Mumbai in March this year to try her luck in tele-serials. She met Grover during a visit to one of the television houses.
The two stayed in touch through SMS. Susayraj even stayed at Grover's Andheri apartment for a few days before moving into her new flat in Dheeraj Solitaire building at Malad.
Police say Grover was helping Susayraj to establish a foothold in the television industry and had arranged an audition for her in an upcoming serial. But Susayraj's proximity to Grover did not go down well with her boyfriend Emile Jerome Matthew, to whom she was to get engaged two months later.
The fateful night
Grover visited Susayraj at 10pm at her Malad home. Susayraj had recently shifted to her new apartment and Grover said he had come to help her settle in. Moments later, Matthew called Susayraj on her cell phone and was angry to hear a male voice in the background. Susayraj, who had earlier told Matthew that Grover had a crush on her, but that she didn't reciprocate his feelings, told him that Grover had come over to help her move into the new house. Matthew told Susayraj not to allow Grover to stay overnight and ended the call. Little did Susayraj know that her decision to allow Grover to stay on with her would change their lives for ever.
He arrived unannounced
Emile Jerome Matthew
At 7:30am the next day, Susayraj was surprised to see Matthew at the door. The lieutenant was furious when he saw the naked Grover in Susayraj's bedroom. The two men had a heated argument after which Matthew grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Grover. He collapsed and died.
The watchman saw them
Around 11am, Susayraj went to the nearby Hypercity mall and bought two bags, a bottle of air-freshener, window drapes, bed-sheets, and a bread knife on Matthew's instructions.
Matthew carried the body into the kitchen and allegedly chopped it into pieces, while Susayraj stuffed them into the bags. They also dumped the bloodstained clothes, bed-sheet, and window drapes in one of the bags along with the bread knife.
Susayraj then called up her choreographer friend Kiran Shreyas and told him that she needed to borrow his car. Once they got the car, she and Matthew dumped the body bag in the vehicle's dicky. The building's watchman saw them do this. Around 4:30pm, they drove towards Manor in Thane district. They also bought two bottles of petrol at Bhayander. After reaching a jungle near Amgaon village in Manor, they poured petrol on the bags and set them ablaze. They returned to Mumbai around 9:30pm.
The loopholes in their story
Police found several discrepancies in Susayraj's statements. She initially told them that she had borrowed the car from Matthew's friend Jitesh. But her lie was caught soon when the police questioned Jitesh. Susayraj then told the police that the car belonged to her friend Shreyas.
The police also took the statement of the watchman of Dheeraj Solitaire, who told the police that he had seen Susayraj along with a man (Matthew) put some bags in the car. After sustained interrogation over 10 days, Susayraj broke down and confessed. She was arrested, followed by Matthew.
The near goof-up
Soon after Grover went missing, Susayraj accompanied his friends to the Malad police station to register a missing complaint. Matthew chose to stay in the apartment. The Malad police asked Susayraj some basic details, after which she went home. Grover's father Amarnath also requested the crime branch to look into the matter.
On May 8, Matthew was called for questioning by the Malad police. He told them he had come to Mumbai for a training session, but the police did not verify his claim with the naval authorities.
Meanwhile, the crime branch learnt that Matthew had called Susayraj nearly 1,000 times between May 7 and 20. "This made us suspicious and we questioned her," said a crime branch officer who did not wish to be named. "The two had repainted a wall to hide the bloodstains. I am surprised the Malad police did not ask them why one wall was coloured differently from the rest."

"It was my big mistake, I not only spoiled my life but even Susairaj’s career has been ruined. I regret, I regret," this is what Emile Jerome Mathew, prime accused in the Neeraj Grover murder case, has been saying in lock-up.
Mathew and Maria Monica Susairaj were arrested by the crime branch for allegedly killing media executive Neeraj Grover and chopping his body into several pieces and burning them at a remote place in Manor, Thane, on May 7. Mathew stabbed Grover after he found him naked in Susairaj’s rented flat in Malad. The two accused were in a relationship.
The police said Mathew had no remorse for Grover. "He is feeling bad only for Susairaj,” an officer said. The police were shocked when Susairaj told them that while Grover’s body lay a few feet away, she had sex with Mathew twice.
Mathew, Grover and Maria
"I was not in that frame of mind, but out of fear, I agreed to his demands. He overpowered me. I blindly listened to Mathew," she told the police.
Susairaj said it was Mathew’s decision to dispose of the body by cutting it into pieces and burning it. "It was 10.30 am, Mathew asked me to get a big knife to chop the body. He threatened to commit suicide if I failed to return in 40 minutes. I was afraid. I loved him and rushed to Hyper City, where I bought a knife and three sports bags." she said.
On Sunday, the police seized Susairaj’s friend Kiran Shreyas’s car, which was used to ferry pieces of Grover’s body to Manor. Susairaj told the police that she was at the wheel when they went to Manor to dispose of the body. "Mathew was familiar with the route and kept giving me directions. While returning, he drove the car as I have night blindness.”
"We found bloodstains on the carpet of the boot and have sent it to the forensic lab. The long knife used for cutting the body has also been sent to the forensic lab," said JCP (crime) Rakesh Maria.
Earlier:
‘Maria, Maria’ was Grover’s last cry
Mumbai: “Maria, Maria!’’ were the last words that Synergy Adlabs’ creative director Neeraj Grover said as he was being slaughtered in a fit of rage by lieutenant J M Mathew in Malad on May 7.
These and other details of the gruesome crime are coming to light following sustained police interrogation of the accused.
Mathew (25), who had arrived from Kochi early in the morning on that fateful day, attacked Grover with a sharp knife after he found Grover sleeping naked in his girlfriend’s bedroom. Mathew and his actress girlfriend, Maria Monica Susairaj (27), have been arrested by the city crime branch on charges of murder and destroying evidence.
According to crime branch chief Rakesh Maria, Susairaj called Grover to help her shift her luggage to her new rented flat in Malad on the night of May 6. Grover then slept there and the two had sex in the night. Meanwhile, Mathew, who had called up Susairaj, overheard Grover laughing and came to know about Grover’s presence at Maria’s flat.
‘I came to give Maria moral support’
Naval lieutenant J M Mathew flew into a rage on learning of Neeraj Grover’s presence in his girlfriend Maria’s Malad flat. “Mathew, who is attached with the Kochi naval headquarters, told one of his friends that his girlfriend in Mumbai was upset over something and that he wanted to go there. The friend dropped himon his bike at the airport, which is 45 km from the naval academy at around 3.45 am and Mathew reached Mumbai,’’ said crime branch chief Rakesh Maria.
On reaching Susairaj’s flat, Mathew found Grover lying naked in the bedroom and lost his temper. “He took out a knife and slashed at Grover’s throat. Grover fell down and screamed “Maria, Maria’’ before losing consciousness,’’ Maria said.
After killing him, Mathew and Susairaj had sex twice and Susairaj then went to Hypercity Mall to purchase a big knife and a traveller’s bag. By then, Mathew had chopped Grover’s body into pieces and packed them in the bag. The duo left to dispose of the body at 4.30 pm and reached Manor in Thane where they poured petrol on the body pieces and burnt them.
They returned to the Malad flat at 9.30 pm. Meanwhile, Susairaj received a call from one of Grover’s friends asking her whether she wanted him to accompany them to the police station to lodge a missing complaint. Susairaj’s friends then picked her up and went to the police station.
She returned home at around 11.30 pm and had a bath even as Mathew busied himself watching TV. The duo went to have dinner in a nearby restaurant and called it a night at around 1.30 am. The duo was behaving normally and were quite sure that they had covered up their tracks successfully, the police said. Both kept receiving calls on their mobiles and behaved in a normal way.
At around 8.30 the next morning, Susairaj received a call on her cell phone from the Malad police station and was asked to come there to give her statement. She went alone and gave her statement. At 12.30 pm, the duo went for lunch in another restaurant where they discussed the line they should take if the police suspected them. “Mathew had tutored her that nobody knew about the murder and she should not be anxious,’’ said Rakesh Maria.
Mathew and Susairaj then watched a movie at home and discussed the murder. At around 6.30 pm, a police team visited the flat and spotted Mathew. The police asked the duo to visit the police station and give a more detailed statement. “In his statement to the police, Mathew said that he was a naval officer and had come to give moral support to his girlfriend after he heard that her friend was missing and she was upset over it,’’ said Maria.
After returning from the police station, the duo had dinner and at 12 am on May 9, Mathew took a cab to Santa Cruz airport.
Meanwhile, a police team along with forensic experts visited the Hyper City mall and seized the hard disc of the CCTV images. The forensic experts also collected blood stains from electric switch borad, tiles, pillow and in the bathroom of Susairaj’s flat.
On Sunday, a team of crime branch officers accompnaied by forensic experts took Jerome Mathew to the flat at Dheeraj Solitaire building where he killed Neeraj and chopped his body into pieces. Officers had taken Maria Susairaj to the flat on Saturday to gather more evidence.
The police meanwhile has turned down a request by Mathew to meet Susairaj in police custody. A crime branch official said that they wanted to avoid a confrontation between them at this stage. Mathew’s father M L Jerome has come down from Mysore to meet his son but the police are yet to decide on his request.

Excerpts from Susairaj’s 14-page confessional statement which was made available to the defence lawyers last week:
“I got a phone call from Emile Jerome (from Cochin), whom I intend to marry, around 11.30 pm. I told him that Neeraj was at my house. The battery of my cell phone got discharged while I was talking to him. Emile then called me on Neeraj’s cell phone. I told him that Neeraj was acting very ‘funny’ on that day. He (Emile) asked me if he should come down and I told him that Neeraj would leave after dinner.”
“Though Neeraj’s friends asked him to join them for a party at one of his friends’ house, he refused to go. I also refused to join him for the party. Since Neeraj had work in Malad in the morning, he requested me to let him stay at my house. I allowed him to stay back.”
(Emile reached the house at around 7.30 am) “He started giving blows to Neeraj. Both started fighting and I could not control them. I fell down after they pushed me aside. When I got up, I saw that Emile stabbed Neeraj with a kitchen knife. I sustained injury on my right palm...I saw Neeraj falling and Emile kicking him. I was screaming... Emile shut my mouth and also threatened to kill me. He then raped me. All this while Emile was holding the knife.”
“By that time, Neeraj was dead. I told Emile to take Neeraj to a hospital. Emile asked me to go to the bathroom and take a bath. Then he came inside and raped me again.”
“Then Emile dragged Neeraj’s body inside the bathroom and asked me to go to Hypercity Mall at Malad and buy bags and curtains...he also instructed me to bring a knife and a room freshener...while I was buying these things, Emile was talking to me on my cell phone. Around 3 pm, Emile chopped the entire dead body into pieces.”
“We took one of my friend’s (Kiran) car and stopped at a petrol pump in Lokhandwala area to fill the tank...Emile got down and brought two plastic cans and filled one them with 5 litres of petrol...he then put Neeraj’s belongings and his chopped body parts into the two bags.”
Following this, “Emile took the bags to a place that was around 15 metre away from where we parked the car (on the Express Highway). He then poured the petrol on the bags and set them on fire.”
“At 10.30 pm, Nishant, a friend of Neeraj called me on my cell phone... Neeraj and Deepak (another friend who accompanied Nishant) asked me to join them to lodge a missing complaint (with the police). I went along with them to the Malad police station...I don’t know what complaint was lodged with the police. My statement was also recorded at the Malad police station. I made a false statement at the police station as told by Emile.”
“On May 8, we (Emile and Mariah) were present at the police station till 3 pm. We were again asked to be at the police station in the evening after which Emile caught a flight for Cochin. I was at the police station till next day afternoon... I had been in contact with Emile over the phone till I confessed before the police. All the while, he was threatening me not to reveal the truth to the police. He told me otherwise he would kill me and also kill himself. I told the police that Emile had killed Neeraj in front of me.”

it seems she eventually put all the blame on her fiance for the murder saying that she hates the sight of him now....check out further news....
Kannada actress Maria Susayraj, who has been arrested in the Neeraj Grover murder case, told the police on Saturday that she does not want to face Emile Jerome Matthew, the other accused, as seeing him gives her "sleepless nights". According to the crime branch officials, she requested them to interrogate her separately.
"I don't want to see Matthew's face," Susayraj, who is lodged in the crime branch lock-up in Bandra, told the interrogating officers.
Susayraj and Matthew, a naval officer from Kochi, were arrested for allegedly murdering Grover, a creative head in a television production house. Grover was missing since May 7.
"Susayraj has been terrified after the brutal murder of Grover, and whenever she sees Matthew, she is petrified. She could not forget the sight of the pieces of Grover's body lying in a pool of blood in her Malad apartment," said a crime branch official.
Grover was allegedly stabbed and killed when Matthew, Susayraj's boyfriend, found him in her Dheeraj Enclave flat. Later, his body was cut into pieces, taken to Manor, and burnt.
The officer said that Susayraj had called in two of her film fraternity friends from Andheri to stay with her after Matthew left for Kochi. "Her friends had no knowledge about the crime, as they came for her company. She told them that she was feeling lonely," said the officer.
Meanwhile, Matthew, who according to the crime branch officials, showed arrogance during interrogation, has suddenly lost his aggression. "Earlier, Matthew had yelled at the top of his voice and acted egoistically. However, he has suddenly mellowed down during the past two days of routine interrogations," said the officer.
Although Matthew's parents have arrived in the city, nobody will be allowed to meet him till May 29, according to the police.
