HOUSTON (Sept. 12) - A massive Hurricane Ike sent white waves crashing over a seawall and tossed a disabled 584-foot freighter in high waves as it steamed toward Texas Friday, threatening to devastate coastal towns and batter America's fourth-largest city.
Ike's eye was forecast to strike somewhere near Galveston late Friday or early Saturday, but the massive system was already buffeting Texas and Louisiana, causing flooding along the Louisiana coast still recovering from Labor Day's Hurricane Gustav.

we are together again, finally!! Seems the storm also messed up all the flights all over the States...poior hubby was exhausted and frustrated when he got back home to Doha Wed...
Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.
Yes may God help those people who had no choice in the matter Scarlett.
We, my aunt and I, couldn't believe the stupidity of some people staying behind and riding out the storm! I am so glad it is finally over though, wish it would never have happened but I suppose this is part of life!

Hopefully you'll be together again soon!
:)
but it never hurts to over emphasize the magnitude of these storms since some people are stupid enough to attempt to ride them out despite mandatory evacuation orders!!
The storm surge was 15 feet and it was a cat 3 when it hit land...my hubby and son are fine...they got 3 inches of rain and the city where we live has no electricity but our farm still did!!
It always makes me mad to hear of those idiots that ride out a storm just because they think they are tough...or they've done it before. It not only puts them in danger, moreso it puts the rescuers in MORE danger...Now the rescuers have to go in search of these morons and spend time and money, where it could have been spent much more efficiently, as in bringing in electric companies to repair the services all over the state. GEEZ...Ok...I do understand that when the evacuation route is jammed with cars that it can be worse than the hurricane itself because you are out in the open but in that case evacuate EARLY!!!! Have a bit of forethought!
I feel for those that lost loved ones or their homes in this storm...some of them couldn't evacuate and to those, I say, bless you...and thank goodness for those lovely people who do the house to house searches for people and animals left behind...I'm sure there is a special place in Heaven for you all!

It has been reported to be a Cat 3!
Walls of water over 25ft!
And galvaston will be completely destroyed!

just called hubby (woke him up! lol) and the hurricane is about 4 hours off the coastline of Houston. Where we live didn't have to be evacuated but will still catch a lot of the spin off tornadoes, high winds and flooding. At our farm it doesn't take much of a wind to lose power so this will probably knock it out completely...
Lisa...I can't imagine what you've been through since Katrina, rita...and now Gustave with a possibility of Ike. We are on the "clean" side of the hurricane...you're not...You know you are in my prayers as well...

I am keeping my eyes on all the updates. Nothing much has changed but it looks like it will stay a category 2. Hopefully it won't get any stronger. Gustav was a cat 2 when it hit us last week and it was pretty bad. Parts of Baton Rouge are still without power. Lower parts of Southeast Louisiana are just wiped out. The major news stations didn't stay around to report about it because New Orelans wasn't affected. There was also no looting or shootings.
We were lucky since our power came back on last Friday (went out on Monday). My dauther's power just came back on line this past Wednesday. My brother lives in the Woodlands and I am fretting about him and his family as well. I have tons of friends in the Kingwood area as well. It has been a busy two weeks around here. All we have gotten from Ike is a few strong rain showers but the winds have been gusting all day. Hopefully I wont' lose anymore shingles off my roof. I am on three waiting list with roofers to come and have a look at the damage from last week. UGH!!! Thank goodness hubby came in from Doha Wednesday of last week. It's been nice to be able to hand some of the work over to him.
I will be up all night watching the updates on Ike. Please keep all of these people in your prayers. The power outages are going to be massive, but hopefully everyone will come through with flying colors.
Later 'yall
Lisa
Best wishes for your husband and everyone in Texas. I feel for the people in the gulf. Thankfully, our friends here from Houston are back safely before the storm.
my hubby is in Texas right now...close to Houston...and yes he was supposed to be home tonight but Houston airports have been shut down as many of the businesses and universities...we're not taking chances because lessons have been learned from Hurricane Katrina and Rita..
So please, if anyone can send up a few prayers for those in the area, please do..every little bit of help counts!
