Two get jail term over theft charges
The criminal court in Doha has sentenced two Asians to one year in imprisonment and ordered deportation at the end of the prison term on charges of theft, says a report in the local Arabic daily al-Sharq.
According to the charge-sheet, a person waiting for a taxi on a main road in the Gharafa area got into the private car driven by one of the accused on the assumption that it was a private taxi. After driving for some distance they stopped near a house where the other accused who was sitting in the front seat got down and began to panic saying that he cannot find his wallet. Then they forcefully searched the trouser pocket of the victim and took his wallet containing QR3,995 and sped away after dropping him at a petrol station.
However, they were apprehended later by the police through an identity parade with the help of the victim.

Karwa taxi is not so safe either. Recently, my girl friend got verbally harassed by a Karwa taxi driver. He kept asking her for her phone # and several inappropriate questions. The driver was also new so it took 1 hr (non-traffic time) from Ramada to the W hotel. It usually takes only 15-20 mins.

For your information, Qatar is listed as one of the Asian Countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_countries_by_GDP).

this is why i take the karwa bus instead. the routes and buses are very limited but there's safety in numbers. and i don't get ripped off unlike their taxi colleagues.

i did get the services of a private taxi driver since the weather got warmer in the mornings though. but i normally take unknown private taxis only when i absolutely need to (usually in the morning when i'm almost late for work) and i should know the route to my destination. i never take them at night. better stay home and be a loser if there's no other choice.

Two "saudi" guys in a old maroon chevy approached me as I was getting out of my parked car. Started something in pretty good english (about being stuck in qatar..). I knew where it was going. Said sorry I'm not giving you any money and walked away.

Sorry to hear of the plights of both the man in the OP and the lady mentioned by Shelly. Private taxis are illegal and that too for a good reason. Many a times my sister, daughter and I have stood minutes on end waiting a Karwa, whenever my husband has been unable to give us a ride, and as tempting as it is, we politely turn down all those private taxi drivers' offers. Just too risky and against the law to boot!

TB, you're just jealous that you're not a private taxi operator.

Or something.

There are normally about 10 private taxi guys standing outside most entrances to most malls. But the police and security seem totally unconcerned.

I thought it was illegal, but perhaps not?

Are the official karwa taxis any better. Some of their drivers dont even know how to talk in a polite manner to their passengers

Don't get in private cabs! It is illegal and DANGEROUS. A friend's former maid (Filipina)got into a private taxi with her friend ready for a night on the town and they were abducted by the 'taxi' driver. One girl escaped the moving car, being badly injured in the escape, the other was brutally raped. Getting into a unregulated taxi is taking too big a risk, no matter how few and far between Karwa taxis may be.
