Insomnia

Zaos_Zulture
By Zaos_Zulture

Ive been having trouble sleeping for the past 2 months. Might be because Ive got way too many things going on in life right now...dunno.

Ive tried various things but now Ive decided to try medication now.

Any specific clinics here or do I just go to the pharmacy and ask for something like diazepam?

Any help will be appreciated.

Hey buddy! Still surviving?

If you tried tackling the underlying cause and still no good, you may want to consider something else. Stress causes the body to secrete certain hormones (e.g epinephrine, nor-epinephrine...etc) that might give you a hard time falling asleep at night. Benzodiazepines and non benzodiazepines drugs such as "Z drugs" (zolpidem) are the choice of treatment. though chronic insomnia victims are usually not not advised to use these hypnotics. The underlying cause should be treated instead(eg. depression).

Suprizingly some antidepressants can be found as over-the-counter drugs at many pharmacies in Qatar. Some of which are: tricyclics (amitryptalin) and the tetracyclic antidepressant mirtazapine. These drugs do induce sedation at first, but gradually loose there hypnotic effect in a matter of weeks. This applies to most of other drugs that cause sedation.

First generation antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, doxylamine, chloraphiniramine...etc cause sedation. They work by inhibiting the neurons' endogeneous histamine rate of fire. Somehow that causes sedation, though its not fully understood how. However, antihistamines should not be used in treating chronic but transient insomnia. It is also not recommended to use antihistamines for more than a week or two. Chronic use of these anticholinergics cause insomnia to worsen of time.

Marijuana's cannabinoids have been found to aid in sleeping though its penalty outweighs its benifits in Qatar. Alcohol may also help you fall asleep but may cause disturbances during your sleep that may cause you to wake up. A carbohydrate generous meal could also help. This could give you the "itis", temporarly increase serotinin levels (serotinin helps induce sleep), and cause the brain to release more endorphin.

just a list of some medication you can get your hands on easily:

Amitriptyline

Mirtazapine (remeron)

Diphenhydramine

Hydroxyzine

Chloraphiniramine

All the best,

Mo

I bought the tranquilizers over a year ago and don’t remember what Pharmacy....I asked for sleeping pills and that’s what I was given...the packet is back in Doha (I'm abroad ATM).. I think the name is Ativan but can't be 100% until I return back to Doha.

They are definitely tranquilizers, and not anti- depressants- They knocked me about like nothing I have ever taken before. (Thats why I have only ever taken one.) I still find it so strange that they don’t sell sleeping pills but Prozac is widely available. I know heaps of people in Doha getting hooked on it, as they can’t get it back home.

There are several homeopathic remedies that can help too. e.g. coffea cruda, nux vomica etc.

They sell them in Pharmacies....BE WARNED- I took one and it knocked me out for 14 hrs and was spaced out for like 22 hrs. Make sure you don't have to go anywhere for at least a day. Oh and it's not a long term solution.

Herbal pills have never worked for me...I think you’re to take them throughout the day so by the evening your relaxed- this can take days even weeks to work. The good news is they are harmless unlike tranquilizers.

I have always found the way to drift off to sleep is to maybe read a book, try to do a crossword puzzle or watch something you're not particularly interested in on TV (if you have one in your bedroom).

Basically, any of these activities embarked upon when prostrate in bed tends to take your mind off whatever is keeping your brain alive and thus sleep takes over.

**Just one tip: Use a pencil, if it's the crossword method, cos otherwise you tend to scribble on the sheets as you doze off and biro ink is the devil to get off of linen.

Happy New Year to you. Sorry about offending all you Scottish folk and even sorrier about the oxymoron.

My excuse is that:

1. I am American

2. I don't understand Scottish people when they speak

3. Us yanks spell whiskey with an 'e'

4. I didn't know that Scotland was part of the UK. I thought you guys had declared independence and had a separate parliament where everyone wears kilts and speaks Scottish. Don't tell me it ain't so.

Gee, will you ever forgive me?

Go to the gym late afternoon/early evening and have a good workout and then drink a large scotch whiskey half an hour before going to bed. Works for me.

Alternatively, if you can't sleep because your mind is too active. Write a list of the things that are bothering you and then prioritize the list and put an action date next to each item. You will feel better and hopefully will be able to sleep.

Alternatively, an active sex life is a great precursor to good sleep.

Good luck!
