interesting.. nothing to do with Islam.. hooray!!!
Groom aged 14 jilts bride of 12 years
Scores of gypsy wedding guests fought each other with knives, swords and guns after the 14-year-old groom jilted his 12-year-old bride.
The clash in the Romanian village of Sinesti left 12 people hurt.
The legal age for marriage in Romania is 18, but the law allows Romanians to marry at 16 with parental consent.
The country generally tolerates arranged child weddings among gypsies whose ancient traditions call for the marriage of children once they reach puberty.
The fighting at Sinesti broke out initially between two families, apparently because the bride’s family was angry over cancellation of the wedding, police said. The fighting then spread to other village residents.
One man was detained and will appear in a Bucharest court charged with attempted murder and destroying property.
Four other people are being investigated for alleged attempted murder and 20 others are accused of causing a public disturbance.
In 2003, the 12-year-old daughter of a gypsy leader stormed out of her wedding ceremony sparking a national debate about forced marriages between gypsy adolescents, and leading to criticism from some European Union officials. Romania has since joined the EU.
Police said they will step up their presence in Sinesti, most of whose population are gypsies.
Romania officially has 500,000 gypsies although there are believed to be about twice that number. Many do not declare themselves due to widespread prejudice.

I think I see where your coming from Alexa. Obviously the gypsies have developed a culture which limits themselves in terms of survival and growth. I reckon its a byproduct of centuries of persecution. Perhaps they see growth as integration thereby losing their identity?
Still I agree with you that in many countries such as Germany, France, uk, switzerland their is not the excuse to remain so down trodden. Western europeans most certainly have the advantage of an education system unsurpassed, save america, by any other country in the world.
Perhaps setting up centers of awareness about the potential options life has to offer could bring some out of the gutter. Many gangsters in California are equally unaware that theft, drugs, and guns is NOT a good thing however the enviroment and gangsta culture keep this sort of mentality active despite access to higher education and non discrimination (for people who do not hold a criminal record).

Across Europe, Gypsies live in dire poverty and are frequently the target of violence and racism. But some governments are finally taking notice of the continent’s largest minority

Plz dont insult islam like that.
It's always the small things that make big differences.
Belgrade, Serbia for one. Living in horrible shanty houses under a bridge, small kids begging for money at the red lights... Sad situation.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
mm very interesting and surprising that people in europe could still be so lawless. I hear alot about corruption in eastern europe such as bulgaria, romania, and croatia.
I often wonder why this is the case? I had a friend whose father was working in romanian TV and she travelled to america to learn production or something. (I loved the way she used to dress). But she was so educated and down to earth.
I also hear alot about muslims in austria who are the minority? And wonder why the gypsies have remained in the illiterate state of their ancestors? Why have they not gained morale along with their countrymen? Is it because they are looked down upon and therefore lack conviction to change or because those who try are limited and ostracized?
Alexa could you tell me which countries have gypsies?

No problem alexa! Let's make a story about a "gypsy massacre" in Romania. This way we can send them to....let's say...Jordan?! I'm sure we can manage to 'find' that Jordan was the historical home of all gypsies.
This way gypsies from all over the world can fly to Jordan, let them kill the Jordanians & steal their lands, call the gypsies "victims" and the Jordanians who want to defend their lands "terrorists", and Europe can have no more 'burdens'
(we can always change Jordan for Uganda)
You don't get them in the North East?
I think the term is Romany.
You must have seen the ornamental caravans parked on spare or park land accompanied by trucks, dogs and general rubbish.
Some of these "travellers" are associated with fairgrounds
Really Alexa.
I have been trying to research them on the net. But I have never heard of them much? Why is it that they cause trouble? Whats their culture like..
Don't worry about generalizing as I am seriously interested in learning about your experience and opinion with Romas?

(N.B. That was a joke, no offence to the Irish)
