Italians bribed the Taleban in Afghanistan !

This is the best way to fight a war ............

A Taleban commander and two senior Afghan officials confirmed yesterday that Italian forces paid protection money to prevent attacks on their troops.

The payment of protection money was revealed after the death of ten French soldiers in August 2008 at the hands of large Taleban force in Sarobi. French forces had taken over the district from Italian troops, but were unaware of secret Italian payments to local commanders to stop attacks on their forces and consequently misjudged local threat levels.

Mr Ishmayel said that under the deal it was agreed that “neither side should attack one another. That is why we were informed at that time, that we should not attack the Nato troops.” The insurgents were not informed when the Italian forces left the area and assumed they had broken the deal. Afghan officials also said they were aware of the practice by Italian forces in other areas of Afghanistan.

It doesn't matter. The post is about the Italians paying the enemy to keep safe and not telling the French about the deal.

agreed

but how many years more they need to fix a single stone for all these projects?

do they really want peace for Afghan's?

or this is a step for oil and gas in central asia?

Dot.com:

Italians are paying to Taliban, it is wrong indeed because they are getting stronger by these finances... I told you war is their business, they are born warriors... The only skill they know is fighting..... So therefore, one should invest in their local projects, schools, businesses, infrastructure... once these things are developed they will be vanished automatically....

wats wrong, if italian's are paying to Taliban???

indeed life is beautiful :P

The Italians got it wrong. Instead of secretly paying protection money to scary Islamists, which obviously finances the enemy, they should have paid the local bandit chief "development aid" for "local projects". The Taliban, of course, would have kept the money but the Italians could have boasted about the merits of the "Italian way" of building peace through co-operation and everybody would have applauded them.

then again, I don't know if Italian soldiers are worth much either :)

so the italians made a smart decision... but were too embarrassed to disclose it to the frenchmen.

Pakistan should also think about this idea. War is their business, pay and kick them out of the country.

I agree that it makes more sense to buy peace than to wage war but what the French are charging is that the Italians' lack of communication of this arrangement directly led to the deaths of the ten French troops - a tragedy by any standard.

if Italian soldiers made an accommodation with the locals and the french didn't, who is going to be better remembered by the locals? People who have found a way of co-existing amiably with their neighbours or those who drop bombs on innocents. Please remember that the the Italians (Romans) have the most distinguished history in warfare and civilization and if they have discovered a new dynamic in living which does not involve killing others we should follow, as we did in the past, to achieve our present liberal western civilisation. Human progress has been about a progression to courts of justice, geneva convention, nuclear disarmament rather than brute force to solve problems.

I know first hand that even the Brits dont want to be there, but the Troops will do what they have to do to get home safe.

Like it or lump it, were all tied to the USA in one way or another.

The Italian thread is hilarious. No one can be really surprised by this, its been their nature through History. All that posturing and not a testicle between them...lol

The simple fact is that most countries do not want to be in the "alliance" , but have to be there because the USA and Britain want to show that this is a global effort.

So, they are participating, but don't want to risk getting hurt..

Actually Afghanistan has gas not oil, but if that is the price to pay for peace then I say go for it.

(In 15 years the world will not need as much oil & gas...the stone age did not end because we ran out of stones...)

..and leave the region's oil in the hand of Muslims?!! There is oil in that area that needs to be secured too!

Stone Cold's got the answer. Annihilate them all. Once there aren't any more Afghans there won't be any more Taliban. Perhaps everybody should use Afghanistan to conduct their nuclear tests. Nobody's keen on Karzai any more, anyway (and how about forgetting to tell the Italians about the change in policy?)

Right, Stone Cold..

Air strikes cause less casualties and they're usually women and children and they only cause the kids who survive them to be terrified and develop permanent psychological disorders.. But who cares it's still better than killing a few soldiers!

Probably is Dali the foreign armies need to be there so the schools can stay open. If the Taleban get back then they will close all the schools for girls and women. The same thing they did when they were in power last. The Afghans don't have a strong enough army to resist. However the western forces could leave and be replaced by a muslim force from muslim countries. Wouldn't it be good if they could stand up to be counted when people are being oppressed and killed??

In Pakistan education unfortunatley is under attack and Pakistan could be the next Afghanistan

The war should be reverted back to the initial bombardment by air only. Thats the only way to reduce casualty. Like it or not, almost all at ground level are Talibans or have the potential to become one.
