By qatexpat

"Expatriates may be only allowed to live in the Gulf countries for a maximum of six years", according to a new proposed law backed by Bahrain's labour minister Majeed al Alawi...........Alawi believes thae restrictions are necessary to preserve the identity of the Gulf, which he said was being weakened by foreign workers, the report added.

So, what do you think ?

they have the same rule in france for skilled workers... no more than 6 years for an expat worker.

I guess, this is normal if these people choose to preserve their identity.

we all have our countries and we need to respect their choices as we do for the rest of the world.

Call is complex of whatever form and name; but it is a complex.

It can be a superiority (For what reason - do not know and understand) complex

OR

Inferiority (there are a TON of reasons for it) complex for not giving citizenship to anyone but a Qatari

They want to preserve the Pure Arabian Breed and they dont want any impurity. Even the few lucky ones who have been granted citizenship, it is actually a second class citizenship and you dont get the same rights as locals.

And what is wrong in granting these people citezenship!!!! I have many guys at work who dress like Qataries, talk like Qataries and behave like total Qataries (whatever that implies) but when I inquired I discoverd that they are all Iranians and Yemenies who were born here, doesn't giving these people the citizenship on of the solutions of the demographic imbalance in this country?

The rule is being considered to prevent ex-pats from ever being able to claim Qatari citizenship. There are sizable populations of Palestinians, Iranians, Pakistanis and others who were born and grew up in this country and in some cases have to go back to their grandparents before they can ever claim a tie to the country of their ancestry. In some cases, these people have no nationality or no ability or right to return to their homeland (such at Turkish Kurds and Armenians, or Palestinians from what is now Israel proper.

There is a "risk" that UN conventions on refugees would someday require Qatar to grant such people citizenship. By forcing these people to "move along" and not put down long-term roots in Qatar, the Qatar government is making these people someone else's problem.

there is a saying for people like us who come to Middle east.. it goes something like this....

If u can survive here for a Day... u are here for a week

If u can survive for a week....... u are here for a month

If u can survive for a month ..... u are here for a year

If u can survive for a year....... u are for 5 years

Real thing is now................. after 5 years u become a CAMEL

6 years in the gulf is plenty. I am not so worried about preserving the identity of the gulf. I am more worried about preserving my own identity which is becoming seriously warped from the time I have spent here. Why would you want to stay here more than 6 years? Its a big world with plenty to offer. Let them keep their identity, they are welcome to it.

rightly said skdkak!. If they bring in such rules just imagine the constructiion sector with locals working. Unimaginable! The whole region would come to a standstill. The other aspect is no one would leave a job back home and come here for 6 years, that would amount to losing your hold back home. The other thing is , imagine Lulu and carrefour without the expats! Business would stall and finally it would be back to prehistoric times!!

wether an expat. is in middle east for 6 years or more doesnt matter.

Who is gonna work here and make them live like kings.

If at all expat is supposed to go after 6 yrs, a new one will have to come and work.

If this doesn't happen - this region is gonna become a society like those during mideaval ages.

And all countries here know it.

I dont think that's ever gonna happen or work out. It's kinda stupid, first they allow people to buy property and give recidency for 99 years and then they want to limit the visa's for 6 years??? how does that work.

It's always the small things that make big differences.

It is a fact that expatriates outnumber citizens in GCC countries. But thats because they need people for the development of their country. Still, its a dilemma for them how to preserve their cultural identity, because of the overwhelming number of foreigners in their countries who do things according to their culture !

So whats the solution ? Rotating expats every six years ? How will that help ? Maybe bring only Americans for the first six years, on the seventh year, pack 'em off and bring in Chinese for the next six years - like that ? I don't understand how that will help preserve the culture of these countries.

Nonesense ... that's what is it . 6 years stay ? WRong solutions for real problems. I hope this will remain just a proposed law. May I ask what are your sources ?
