Life for a Single Woman
Hi all, I was just wondering are there many single women in doha? No this isn't a sleazy proposition. I'm a single woman who will be coming to Doha to work and am just wondering how many of us are out there. I've been told by friends that Doha is more family oriented and that as a single woman I'd be bored to tears. Reading recent posts abut boredom, I'm starting to wonder if they are right. To all single women out there, what do you do when you're not working? (I guess the boredom applies to men as well- just anyone there without a family.) I've heard in Dubai there's a bridget jones club, where newcomers who are women can meet up socially. Check out their site if it sounds interesting. http://www.bridgetjonesclub.com/local.php?area=1
I know it sounds completely cheesy, but as the same time it's probably a great way to meet people in a new country. Does Doha have one of these? Is there interest in having one or are there just not enough people who would attend? I think it sounds like a great idea. Would love your thoughts.
Ha ha Greeker...you crack me up! I think azilana offered a better explanation of metrosexual. It pretty much means a guy who takes the pains to look good, i guess. Thanks for all the warm welcomes!
Greeker - you mentioned manicures, I think that's where the confusion with nail painting has arisen.
ql is the place to be :D
let me confess there are times that get singles bored(male or female),but as you've heard,QL is great fun. There were days I forgot to sleep and realised it was time to go to office, while on QL..lol
YOu are lucky someone has already offered you a gun, incase.Any such help,we are all there..haha
Cya soon in DOha
David Beckham as one too! ;-)
Life for a single woman is not that bad, just respect the culture & tradition here, you will never go wrong. Qatar is not bad for single woman, infact, I think you got a big advantage.
Cheers

I don't know if Greeker is qa metrosexual guy?...let me think....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Yup...he is...lol
If I understand right, METROSEXUAL describe men who have a strong concern for their aesthetic appearance, and spend a substantial amount of time and money on their images and lifestyles.
Sorry for the hijacking...izzie.
BTW, welcome to QATAR ;-)))

about greeker???
i was also confused what metrosexual means, until karin asked and izzie gave the meaning...in touch with his feminine side??? greeker honey, where are you? can you please shed light to this? :D
{Sorry i missed them. I wasnt in QL for a day or two. About my feminine side...well, i paint them nails (toes), do them brows (eyes), put them mascara (above the eyes, violet), touch them cheeks on cheeks(both), and generally swoon at the sight of blood. I also am very particular about Sex and the city. Nobody changes channel when ooh-la-la jessica parker is on. how i wish i had her confidence...oooh!
Men, please dont offend me because then i will start crying and then my muscara will run. And then i would have to slap you, real hard, and then my nails would break.
Just understand that these men are nothing but trouble. Leave me and my metrosexual self alone!}
That will make a big difference too, my work has quite a few single girls. They seem to enjoy themselves. I imagine how you get on will depend on who and what you do here. Good luck !

Sorry, I think I missed the rest of this thread whilst I digested that information :D
Hi izzie! Look forward to meeting you
You should not show signs of fear or weakness. Just threaten to call the police or husband. Just use a higher tone of voice & they will retreat. They get scared because some men would come to your rescue if they find you being harrased by another man.
In general, the people are generous, nice, polite & helpful but you have to know the secret of dealing with them.
actually someone tried to grab me on the Corniche last week... just slapped 'em - so it isn't totally safe as air supply says but i agree that people are very helpful
be prudent - dress modestly.
don't be scared to tell men to mind their own business.
silence or polite answers can be seen as acquiesence
keep yr mobile at hand
i just take out my mobile and say 'do you want to talk to my husband?
and do what mum always told you, dont accept lifts from strangers.
dont sit on the front seat of a taxi - sit in the back.
As a woman I think its safe enough to walk around on your own - along the corniche etc (obviously not down dark alleys and things). Of course there is always risk involved with being alone at night, but the general feeling is that its safe. Not that people really walk around that much outside anway, that I've noticed. Actually I kind of miss that outdoor culture..but oh well.
If you are wise, & don't talk to men (or look them in the eyes) you should be ok. Some men here seem to have this weird notion that western women are all up for it...so I've learned u have to ignore them.
At first I found it quite hilarious that the taxi drivers break every western taboo of social conduct in the first 2 minutes: To be grilled on your age, religion and marrital status in the first sentence is the norm.
Treat yourself to a wedding ring, Izzie, its the best investment my girl friends and I have ever made!!
x mp
well come to Qatar
though i m also new here but what experienced ""AirSuplly"" defined very well. i m agree with em.
hope u find QL very supportive against boredom as well useful information and more bout Qatar.
Always Smile :-)
I already told her that she may hear stories each now & then about nasty things here. Of course it is not 100% safe. No place is 100% safe but what's the percentage of the incidents that you have mentioned? Almost zero compared to the population (at least this is what I read in the newspapers).
I also have seen lots of women walking/jogging on the Corniche in the middle of the night. Totally safe! A thing you can not do in many famous cities around the world.
I even heard that crime level is increasing much in Dubai compared to here!
And also the people are so helpful here when you are in trouble & need help.
I beg to differ Airsuplly, although Qatar is safer than many countries, it is still not extremely safe. She definitely cannot walk along in the middle of the night! Moreover, it would be recommended that she doesn't walk alone at any time if possible(there's a thread about a lady who got raped in daylight while walking alone), and not to ride in public buses. And also be careful in busy malls and such cause there are theives (check one of the threads about a theft in Villagio).
I'm trying to freak u out izzie, but better safe than sorry. It's not that dangerous in Qatar, but u just have to be aware of ur surroundings to prevent any bad happening.
Qatar is a nice, quiet & safe place to be. Yes you may hear each now & then about some foolish harrasment to a single woman, but all in all it is very safe and you can even walk/jog alone in the middle of the night with no danger at all.
As for boredom, it is true that Dubai has much much more places to go to than Doha, but it all depends in the end about what YOU want & what life style do YOU wanna lead. I prefer Doha the quiet peaceful city than that noisy, jammed, hectic city; Dubai.
You can always surround yourself by your fav group of friends to do your fav activities.
All I can say now is; welcome to Doha & I don't think that you'll be bored to tears (and if you do, I'm sure you'll find lots of shoulders to cry on...LOL)
Bridget jones group in Dubai is under expatwoman.com, dont think expatwoman.com go down to well here in Qatar. Their Qatar section always blank.
But you can join Qatar Social Group ... PM xena and you can go out with her group.
Good luck. :-)
Thanks guys, looks like QL is the place to be.
Karin, metrosexual is like a guy who is in touch with his feminine side- who takes care of himself and his appearance. You know the type who gets his nails manicured. Actually, i think it's great. Why should women do all the grooming? :=)
Anyways, back to the thread- I hope to meet you guys soon. Your trips and get togethers sound like a good time.
The key is to meet a group of good friends cause the dating scene here is pretty much non-existent and most people aren't here for long term so they don't think of relationships. QL gatherings are great and u'll really enjoy them, just don't think about what's not here...instead think about what is. It's been said before and I'll say it again: Qatar is what make of it. There will be dull moments, but u'll have fun...especially if ur in QL :D
And Welcome to Doha :-)
Hi Izzie welcome to Doha soon, im a single woman and i think ill be single for the rest of my life. lol Through QL im now a member of one of the groups here who makes my weekend less lonely :-) not all are singles though but their families are not here so we gather to fight home sicknesses.
Darude: you're si*ly offering her your infamous gun, good u didnt frighten Izzie :-)
Greeker: excuse my ignorance but im curious what do u mean by "metrosexual: :-)
[img_assist|nid=21401|title=Adjust, Adopt & Overcome|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=180|height=135]
you are one of the lucky ones to come across QL even before you arrive. Great people to socialise with. So much happening lately, I am sure more and more to come. Use these events to meet people and fight boredom. After all it's on the person. Avoid comparing life here with your life back home. Look at it as new beginning and a new challenge, both professionally as well as socially! My own experience speaks. I am only a month old here.
Welcome to Doha, good luck and hope to meet you soon in some of the QL gatherings!!!
May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends below never fall out!
You are most welcome too. I am from Dubai too.. THis place creates that loneliness... Its tuff
The social group meets up once in a while for a coffee or a dhow trip. Sometimes, its a night out while at other times its a dining out. The bottom line is 12 to 15 people get together and do what such a group do - have clean fun.
We went on a dhow trip a coupla weeks back and there will be more of that. I havent checked the bridgett jones site, but i do have a feeling that we have its counterpart, right here in QL.
By the way, only one of your rule applies to me... i am single, but not women, i am metrosexual, if that is of any help, hehe...
Btw...welcome to Doha!
Yeah me interested too , clubing is socialism good to keep exchange of views with the ppl to whom we just know that we meet always in a friendly sitting ? As I am of today, it seems like I am the luckiest person on the world. HAHAHA...
Thanks Darude for your gallant offer. I'll let you know if I need your gun when I get there. :=)
IOU, I agree, QL is truly fantastic....a real lifesaver. I'm glad I found it and will definitely continue with it. Just wondering if anyone's also interested in anything a little less...well, virtual?
Thanks Shavonne, for the social group info. I took your advice and subscribed just a second ago. I guess i'll check it out when i gain access. Does the group meet up often? What kind of things do you do? Souds great.
Is anyone out there interested in BJ club or do you all think it's not needed in Doha?
CHeck this out--> Qatar Living Social Group http://www.qatarliving.com/user/13133
