Do long distance relationships work? Looking at all the Indian workers in the Gulf countries who are away from their partners/families for years - how do they manage their relationships and being alone in these foreign countries?
Many can. Depending on their strength of character and commitment to their partner. I know of a number of Indian nationals who are focused on God and draw their strength from there. They are decent family men and suffer the same problems but manage to weather the storms of life because of their anchor. Edit - trust and love - yes, certainly but all that is on human strength, which may fail. NB: I said "may".
Whether or not one believes in monotheism or others - one draws strength from a power beyond oneself and all things are possible.

Long distance relationships don't usually work well if they're filled with prolonged absences. Two years until you see someone again? And you expect that your partner would remain faithful to you? I doubt it. Maybe if both agree to have an "open" relationship, it could stand the test of time, but then do you really want a relationship like that? Most wouldn't.
Short absences (husband is a pilot, or works offshore; wife goes back to school for a semester, etc.) I think can be managed, but longer than a few months and I think even the best-intentioned individuals would be tempted to stray.
