Lose one of the five, or die

Bahraini83

Good day friends,

How r u doing??hope every1 is good on Sunday you better be good to start a nice week
If, for any reason, you were told that for you to survive you must sacrifice one of your five senses… what would be the one ?
to make sure what we’re talking about

P.S. I have posted this thread in different forums and there was like an agreement on one, let me see what QLers think?
Thank god we have those 5 senses and we don’t have lose any of them to survive.

my Mum has been totally deaf now for 35 years, over that period of time she has become more and more introverted, went to lip reading and still struggles, when all the family are together, or at parties etc, she feels out of it, she really misses her music and musical DVD's. After seeing this happen I would hate to go deaf

Careful gyspy. Studies have shown that even the best lip readers in the world (okay america) only get approx 30 % right when it comes to lip reading....but it is a good skill!! The goss you can pick up on ;-)

I honestly think I'd choose to go deaf. I could learn lip reading and sign language to I could still communicate and I think I could live without music then I could live without tasting good food, the smell of flowers, and the sight of my family and friends. :)

Sometimes the Lord takes away a sense, but to wish that you would rather die is totally wrong.. I am sure that if it actually came to a choice, you would choose life.

My uncle has been blind since the age of three. He is now in his sixties.. What he has lost in sight, he has gained in other areas. He lives a normal life, has children and enjoys himself. I am often amazed by how he travels around by himself and knows just about everyone in the area.

I do think the subject is creepy, it is an open forum so I have the right to post my comments the same as others.

You can say whatever your like it's true and if I find the subject morbid and creept so can I say whatever I like and I will not let others forbid me or try to bully me off the forum and not to take part it, is not their business to forbid me.

I hope to goodness that no one here has to offer to give up any of their senses (even to those who have lost them) to maintain their life because I am happy that I can use all of mine.

Second I would like to tell those who think its such a creepy thread that one interested response = all your pointless comments (it’s a forum isn’t it? I’ll say whatever I like… I find your words pointless)

This debate has been discussed the world over...like "what would you do if you had a million dollars". Its just a discussion, not factual! Look at other threads here today, some of those are depressing.

And no CB, britexpat is right. You don't loose organs in order to suffer a loss of a sense. Deaf people still have their ears. Blind people still have their eyes, and I cannot smell and I still have my nose.

No I think it is utterly depressing. No hangover from yesterday as you don't know my habits anyway.(now that is really rude).

It is a hypothetical question and is extremely creepy my idea, I do want to give an answer and that is whati I think, it is not meant to offend anyone just a plain statement.

A very creepy subject for the beginning of the week.

There is so much suffering in the world as it is, and then for someone to ask you about your choice what is the answer to that - what is he doing with such creepy information???

I think you folks are exceedingly creepy and morbid, one thread about if you only had two hours to live and now we have someone here who wants to cut off your vital organs in order to live very creepy.

Let him get something cut off and tell you how he is surviving and then you can all decide if you want to loose an eye or anything else you are all very very creepy indeed - what is this the Summer depression???

tallg....yeah, I have been able to smell, although I don't really remember. Lost my sense of smell young.

Ragnarock...taste is not only for pleasure, it warns you of dangers as well, albeit not so much in this day and age. I haven't had the sense of smell for a long time and haven't died yet...in fact people are more relaxed around me...ie taking their shoes off etc

I would choose taste...its the one that is least likely to impact your survival chances....sure you'd lose some the pleasure of eating some things...but the sence of smell can also warn you of dangers (like gas leakes etc...) whereas taste is only for pleasure....i'm sure I wouldn't enjoy it, but yes i'd vote for taste.

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

By Loulsy• 17 Aug 2008 09:31

Well.. tried going without sight.. scared the hell out of me and dont want to repeat the experience!!! so sight and hearing are big No - NOs....

Now.. smell has a huge influence on taste but taste doesnt influence anything.. so i'd rather give up Taste!...

snowyowl - The taste buds on your tongue only identify bitter, salty, sweet and sour flavours. The true taste of food is identified by cells at the top of the nasal cavity, and smell is by far the main factor in determining the flavour of food. Without smell, the ability to taste foods is severely diminished.

Saw a program a few years ago about kids who are born without the ability to feel what they touch..

They always have to be gauraded because they may burn themselves on the stove or heater. Scald themselves with hot water etc..

Truly a desperate situation for parents..

I cant even imagine losing sight or hearing. Especially once you know what it is like to see and hear, it seems so frightening to have to live without these crucial senses. If we are blind we have to depend on others for many things. .. If someone were to lose their hearing they would have to learn to read lips and sign language. If I consider choosing taste there is no point in eating. Better to live on food supplement tablets… no fun in that. Touch is also important.. I would miss it terribly…but not as much as sight. I think touch is even more important than hearing.. as its connected with many other emotions..:)

Now the only one left is smell. There are good smell and bad odor. Its always good to have good smell… may fav. Perfume....Smell of coffee is very refreshing and some natural smells.. but at least I can avoid. Bad odor..

I would have to say I can live without the smell.

But brandlylady, if you lose smell it means you lose taste as well, doesn't it? I saw a show on TV once where there was this professional tea taster who thought he relied on his taste buds to taste the best tea. They then blocked his nose so he couldn't smell a thing. Then they gave him tea and coffee and he couldn't differentiate between them!
