1. An island has two resident tribes. Tribe A is made of people who always tell the truth while those belonging to Tribe B always tell a lie and try to mislead. A tourist to the island encountered three natives walking together. He asked one of them: “Sir, to what tribe do you belong?” That worthy replied but the tourist could not follow what he said. So he asked the person standing next to him: “Will you please tell me what your friend just now said?” “Sir, he said that he belongs to Tribe A”, replied the second person of the trio. At which the third gentleman said: “No, no! My friend said that he belongs to Tribe B”. So, of the two companions, which one was telling the truth?

2. The square root of half the total number of a swarm of bees went to a Malati tree, followed by another eight-ninth of the total. One bee was trapped inside a lotus flower, while his mate came humming in response to his call. O Lady, tell me how many bees were there in all?

drsam, you can't solve the equation you set up. You have to think logically. You will need 8/9th. That means that you look at multiples of 9. You also make sure that their half has a integer as square root. An odd number cannot have a half without decimals. So you look at multiples of nine which are even. 18, 36, 54, 72 ..the half of 18 is 9, and has a integer square root. 36 and 54 don't. 72 has 36 which has the square root 6. If you try 18 with 9 as a half and 3 as the square root you will get 3+16 which is already above 18. So, you turn to 72 and all works out fine. You can try higher numbers, but they won't work.

how did u find the answer? by try/error or by arithmetics (on equation with one unknown sq r (x/2) + 8x/9 + 2 = x => x/2 + 64x/81 +4 = x^2...etc)?

the question u have to ask any of the 2 shopkeepers is:

"if i asked UR NEIGHBOUR which road will take me to the river, what will be HIS answer?" the shopkeeper will answer "he will tell u to take this road". u have to take the other road to reach the river. for a negative and a positive will yield negative.

same as the ennemy of my friend is my enemy.

this reminds me of an old school time puzzle...

a road bifurcates to two( one to the river and another to the sea) and a traveller meets two shopkeepers at that point, one is truthful and one lier.

what is that one question i need to ask to any one of them ( not both ) to know which is the correct road to the river.

yea LP sorry I am wrong...how can you be wrong..:)

By anonymous• 9 Jun 2011 13:08

It is 8/9 of 72, FS, of the total!

By Formatted Soul• 9 Jun 2011 13:06

8/9 of 64 is 56

56 + 6 = 62 + 2 is 64??

The total is 72. The square root of half (36) of them is 6. Another 8/9th (64) followed, which makes it 70. 2 were trapped, which makes it 72.

sq r (x/2) + 8x/9 + 2 = x

the most plausible answer is 48

your question says the worthy said something...it should be true... so he is A..he said so...the second one is also from A..so he said the truth that the first one sadi A. Third one is from B...so he lied that the first one said B.

The 3rd one was lying..:)

2nd Q.. I dunno..always used to get C for Math...:(

the second of the trio is from tribe A, the third from tribe B

- if one is A, than he said :"A" so no2 said the truth, than he's A, the third lies than B

-if no1 is from tribe B, than he also said A because he will lie! so no2 said he said A which is right, tnan no 2 is A, while no3 lied so he's B
